= k, then x = k or x = k
We usually write this solution as: x k

Step 1: Move the constant term to the other side of the equation.

Step 2: Group the xs together in parenthesis. Write + ___ inside the parenthesis and
+ ____ on the other side of the equals. The problem should look like:

2
___ ____ x bx c

Step 3: Make sure the coefficient of x
2
is 1. If it is not 1, divide out the coefficient
from the xs.

Step 4: Find the number that goes in the blanks.
First blank: Take the b-number (the middle number) and half-it and square-
it. This is the number that goes in the 1
st
blank.
Second blank: To find the number that goes in the 2
nd
blank, you multiply
the first blank number by the coefficient of the parenthesis (if you brought
out a coefficient).

Step 5: Factor the resulting perfect square trinomial as:
2 2
___ or ___ x x

Step 6: Apply the square root property and solve for x.
