    the stress in the studs holding the cover in place when the tank is filled with sea water and the water
    rises in the sounding pipe to a height of 8m above the tank top. Assume the water pressure to act
    inside the stud pitch line. Density of seawater 1025 kg/m3.
    8. A vessel of 8000 tonne displacement has to lift a load from the quay by a heavy derrick. The point of
    suspension of the derrick is 18m above the keel and it plumbs a point 10.7m from the centre line.
    KM is 8.8m and KG is 7.9m. Calculate the maximum weight which can be lifted if the angle of heel
    must not exceed 7 0.
    9. A hopper barge, which may be considered of rectangular from, is 42.7m in length and 16m in breadth.
    It has a displacement of 600 tonne, when floating at a draught of 1.8m. A compartment 16m long and
    5.3m wide, situated at the centre of the barge contains mud loaded to the same depth as the water line.
    The mud has a density twice that of seawater. Calculate the draught of the barge when the bottom is
    opened and the mud discharged. Density of seawater 1025 kg/m3.
    10. A model 6m long has wetted surface of 2.8m2. When it is towed through salt water at a speed of 4
    knot the total resistance is 28N and the frictional resistance is 14 N. Given that the frictional
    resistance varies as wetted surface (speed)1.5 calculate the total resistance of a similar ship 122m
    long at the corresponding speed.
