6.3 Horizontal Attenuated Total Reflectance
(HATR) accessory, for the analysis of viscous
additives, strongly absorbing additive
concentrates, and/or greases. A trough plate
accessory with a ZnSe crystal is recommended.
NOTE 2: HATR accessories are made by a
variety of manufacturers, and must be purchased
specifically for your instrument. Alternatively, two
KBr plates, 4 mm x 25 mm round, with a 0.025
mm (25 um) Teflon spacer, can be substituted. If
viscosity is not an issue, a 0.025 mm (25 um) KBr
cell can be used as well.

4. Some of the key additive peaks are identified below, and their net absorbance values given. The
hydrocarbon regions, which can give regions of negative absorbance after subtraction, are outlined in red,
and should be ignored. The green box shows a negative absorbance due to carbon dioxide vapor
differences, and should be ignored.
