Development history:
Since the very first days of development in 1971 to date, Intel have presented so many
generations of CPU with names corresponding to technology and business development
strategy, such as CPU 4004, CPU 8088, CPU 80286, CPU 80386, CPU 80486, CPU
80586,..... Core i3, i5, i7. Description diagram:

2. Classify architecture of Core i series:

Nehalem (First generation)

Mainly using socket LGA 1156 but some models use socket 1366
Nehalem was designed based on 32nm technology of Westmere (former Nehalem-C).
Gesher is previous code name of the processor.
Products from this first generation will have names as i3 - 520M, i5 - 282U,
Sandy Bridge (Second generation)

The biggest difference between Sandy Bridge and previous Core i CPU is integratedGPU will be also manufactured based on 32nm technology. This will make Sandy
Bridge netbook/laptop have higher graphic quality.
Old generation of Core i CPU for laptop/desktop was labelled by 3 digits with suffix
(e.g. 520UM) while the new one-Sandy Bridge will be labelled by 4 digits with suffix
(e.g. i3 - 2820QM, i5 - 2520U)
This CPU series use mainly socket LGA 1155
Ivy Bridge (Third generation)
Containing new technology from Intel inside, Ivy Bridge promisingly will help
devices to be stronger, more efficient in saving energy.
About architecture, Ivy Bridge uses transistor technology 3D Tri-Gate on 22nm basis.
This structure will be ready integrated graphic processor which supports Direct-X 11
as HD4000, it has ability to play super-definition video as well as to process 3D
contents.
Basically, Ivy Bridge CPU will also have general names as Core i3, i5, i7. To identify
Ivy Bridge processor, producers have placed digit 3 right after dash symbol in the
name, it means the third generation.
Examples: i5 - 3670S, i7 - 3550,...
Like 2nd generation Ivy Bridge also use socket 1155
Haswell (Fourth generation)
New technology Haswell helps devices to use power less than 20 times in comparison
to Sandy Bridge in standby mode, graphic efficiency was also noticeably improved.
This is the fourth generation in Core i processor product family, it still uses 22nm
technology and 3D transistor like Ivy Bridge.
Similar to Ivy, you can identify Haswell CPU by paying attention to digit "4" after
dash symbol in the name.
Intel keeps using socket 1155 for this product.
Broadwell (Fifth generation)
Newest member from Intel's CPU family, it was released in late 2014. According to
producers, the new processor will make devices run with higher efficiency,
concurrently use 30% less power than Haswell.
3. Identify the last character in name of Core i CPU
U (Chip U): U means your CPU comes from power-saving series, it has low frequency, often
used for Ultrabook or laptop series which attach special importance to power saving
M (Chip M): this CPU product family has higher frequency, often integrated in laptop for
gaming or for high quality graphics processing
Furthermore, there are some other symbols as:

K: K at the end of name let you know the processor has an unlocked multiplier, meaning
you can overclock the CPU in the bios by simply increasing the CPU multiplier.
S: "Performance-optimized lifestyle" CPU product family, your devices will get a little lower
performance but also a little lower power usage
T: "Power-optimized lifestyle", much lower performance, but also much lower power usage
4. Technlogies used in Intel Core i CPU
Turbo Boost
Turbo Boost is a feature only seen on Core i5 and i7, allowing processors temporarily
self-overclock. This feature will help some cores increase processing speed, when
applications do not use all the cores, processor will automatically overclock cores
which are running to higher frequency.

Hyper Threading Technology

This is super flow distribution technology, allowing to simulate logical CPU right
inside physical CPU, help CPU to process more information.

6. How to find a proper CPU for your computer?

Before buying a CPU, you need to know which socket your mainboard supports, you can
easily find this information by searching your mainboard name on internet. Then, let choose
a CPU suits your finance condition as well as efficiency level that you want.
