This unit provides students with basic skills in the area of post
production operations, post production technology, audio, as well as
a critical appreciation of story telling and the history, theory and craft
of editing. Delivered in the first two terms of Level 1, this unit
enables students to perform a wide variety of essential post
production tasks.

Introduction Through a programme of practical exercises, tests and critical


assignments, students will become familiar with basic post
production techniques including: editing across different genres,
machine operations and the interconnection of equipment in non-
linear environments. This unit will also introduce students to audio
post production, compositing and basic quality control. A series of
lectures will help students to locate editing within a history of cinema
and television, and within discourses around story telling.

The content of this unit will include:

• History and theory of editing;


• The role of the editor;
• Preparation for editing;
• Interconnection of equipment;

In order to pass this unit, the learner must demonstrate that the

Much of the learning and teaching in this unit will take the form of
intensive workshops delivered to small groups of students.

Teaching will be delivered in the context of a simulated work-place
