Introduction to the Event
Model United Nations Conferences:
MUN is a model version of the real United Nations. It is a simulation event where students
from different cultures and academic backgrounds attend international conferences and
discuss actual issues of global importance, trying to bring solutions to them. Students
represent different nations, and defend their points of view in the discussions that take
place. Participating in a Model United Nations can be a life-changing experience. Since the
conference is arranged and it precedes exactly like the United Nations actual conferences,
you will have the opportunity to gain firsthand knowledge about the UN-System, the
decision-making process and the diplomatic work. All the while you will be enhancing your
communication skills and debating techniques on the search for compromise, cooperation
and consensus. Taking part in a simulation of the United Nations, together with other
students who share the interest in international relations and foreign, means representing
another country and the ideology that the country utilizes might be different from your own.
This creates a means of diversity in ones character, and adds to the skill of multitasking. It
also means debating current issues of the United Nations agenda, and experiencing how
the international community achieves solutions for such concerns. You will be a delegate,
thus you will have to use diplomacy and negotiation in order to achieve a consensus. The
conferences will held on the discussion of different topic areas, and the debates will be
confined to the mandates of different UN committees.
The MUN Team at GIMUN will assign the country and committee prior to the event. The
committee sessions shall take place over the three days of the event. This year at
GIMUN15 we will be having a total of 8 committees:
General Assembly:
Specialized Agencies:
Social Events:
Concert:
After the exciting, yet fatiguing committee sessions, the exhausted delegates need to
unwind. GIMUN is known for scheduling the most exhilarating socials for the participants.
This year will be no different; the delegates will find themselves being swept away by the
ambience and thrill of the Concert night, featuring the best of the music world. In previous
years singers like Ali Azmat, Strings, EP, Noori and Nescafe basement band have rocked
the stage. So for all those young delegates who also share a love for music, this is the
place to be at for the weekend!
Cultural Night:
Global Village is a traditional cultural celebration of the unifying nature of the MUN spirit
and an encapsulation of the goals of the United Nations to develop friendly relations
between the nations of the world. The night is exotic and festive, delightful stalls manned by
your fellow delegates with drinks, food and souvenirs to share. The Global Village is a MUN
tradition that promotes unity. Delegates, garbed in traditional clothes of the country they
represent, set up stalls and prepare a short presentation to show the culture of their
assigned country. Coupled with a huge ramp where each delegation will represent its
culture. Global Village will radiate with a vibrant, cosmopolitan atmosphere and will be the
event to remember. With hundreds of colors and cultures around, you will be mesmerized
with the overflow of fun and joy, waiting this October for you. GIMUN promises you a trip
around the world on the night of The Global Village!
Theme Dinner:
After a long day of debating, another social event that GIMUN 15 will have is a formal
dinner. It will be the relaxing part of the event for the delegates where they can get together
and enjoy an exquisite variety of food with their friends and other delegates. It is a great
way to meet people and enhance your experience of a Model United Nations event. Also, it
is also in the middle of the conference days, so delegates can discuss and plan multiple
strategies for the remaining sessions. A theme for the dinner will be conveyed to the
participants before they arrive so they can dress up accordingly, and there will also be a
surprise activity for the participants at the dinner.
Speak It Up Challenge:
This year we will be conducting a talk show in which we are anticipating the support and
involvement of Ms Anusha Rehman, Minister of State for Information Technology and
Telecom, and Mr Rana Tanveer Hussain, Federal Minister for Science and Technology in
Pakistan. The delegates will be encouraged to attend this talk show and enhance their
debating skills in the presence of such well known and experienced guest.
The GIKI MUN Team was established in 2012. Operating as a part of SOPHEP;
the society that organizes GIKI Model United Nations annually, the primary
purpose of the team was to gather and train students interested in the field of
MUNs. Regular Mock MUN sessions were carried out throughout the year. This
preparation was accounted for when freshmen students secured One Best Delegate
Award and Two Honorary Mentions at their first expedition- AirMUN 2014. The GIKI
MUN Team also attended Parliamentary sessions at the Provincial Assembly of Khyber
Pakhtunkhwa in Peshawar, and The Senate in Islamabad- 2015. Most recently the
team has gained international recognition by getting involved with the UN Major Group
for Children and Youth (UNMGCY). Preparatory Consultations are being provided to
the UNMGCY for the World Humanitarian Summit in Istanbul, 2016. With 18 current
members, the GIKI MUN Team has established itself as one of the rapidly progressing
units in the university, and hopes to implement the experience it has gained in the
organization of the upcoming GIKI Model United Nations.
Regards,
Hamza Salman Siddique,
Secretary General GIMUN 15.
