Introduction

My objective is to create an artwork of the Seven Wonders of the World to

promote a greater appreciation of our cultural past. In order to achieve my objective, I
need to research different kinds of meaningful and useful information to promote and
convince others to care about, as well as making them have a greater appreciation. The
Seven Wonders have left a great legacy of human wisdom and civilization. It is a
magnificent cultural heritage from the past to advance the future development of the
world. Therefore, I would like to change people’s perspective to the cultural past through
my work.

As far as I am concerned, I want to create seven drawings of the Seven Wonders

to encourage people to have a greater appreciation of our cultural past. I choose the Seven
Wonders, because the Seven Wonders are the most representative and attractive ancient
architecture on the earth. Thus, I hope people will change and start to have a greater
appreciation of our cultural past after seeing my drawings. My drawing style will be
realistic and attractive so that it can easily draw people’s attention. In addition, I will use
oil paint to draw my artwork, since oil paint can make things stand out and create the
ancient feelings.

In order to achieve my objective, I have a full plan. Firstly, I need to research the
relevant information, such as the history of the seven wonders and the stories behind
Moreover, I need to research on the information about oil painting. Secondly, I need to
visit different kinds of drawing exhibition to learn from other artists and review the
drawing style and techniques of them. Thirdly, I will interview my drawing teacher who
is an artist to ask him different kinds of questions of how to promote the cultural past to
others with paintings. With his professional comments and advices, I think I can draw
good paintings to promote and raise awareness of the cultural past. Beside art teacher, I
will also interview the humanities teacher to give knowledge about the importance of
history, in order to reveal it in my paintings. Fourthly, in order to have sufficient time to
create good paintings, I have started the paintings in September so that I would not need
to do things in hurry. At last, I will follow the instruction of the teacher to finish the task
on time, so that I will not rush at the end.

In conclusion, I hope I can successfully promote a greater appreciation of our

cultural past to others through my artwork. I know it is difficult to change others’ mind
and influence others, but I will work hard and follow my plan to achieve my objective!

Area of interaction
3|Page
The area of interaction that I am going to focus is “Human Ingenuity”. This is
because I am going to create seven paintings in relation to the history and ethics that will
influence people to have a greater appreciation of our cultural past. Therefore, “Human
Ingenuity” is the best choice for my project because it allows us to invent, create and
transform. Moreover, “Human Ingenuity” enables me to focus on the reason and the
method of creating the product as well as the consequence. The reason that I am going to
create this product is because nowadays all people are just thinking about new technology
and new things. People just care about new computers, cell phones and all kinds of new
inventions. Here is one thing that I witnessed during the trip in Cambodia. I have visited
the ancient architecture Ankor-Wat in Cambodia, but many of my classmates refused to
go inside and explore the Ankor. Their excuse was that they thought it was too hot and
meaningless. They thought it was very boring to go inside, and it was just an old
architecture, which was not worth going inside to waste their energy and time. This
reveals that their appreciation to the cultural past is not very keen. They just like new
things. Indeed, this is a very bad habit, because we should respect and learn from the
ancient people’s wisdom. They teach us how to improve and enable us to understand the
culture of the country. Moreover, the ancient architectures are just like communicating
with us and telling the story about the past, because every ancient architecture has a
meaningful and unique story behind them which teaches us a lesson so that we can learn
from the history to improve ourselves. In addition, the ancient architecture allows
foreigners to understand your country and people. On the other hand, the consequence
of making this product is that people will have a greater appreciation of our cultural past
after viewing seven paintings. This will influence their thoughts and perspectives ever
after.

Description of techniques and application

4|Page
In order to create artwork of the Seven Wonders of the World to promote a greater
appreciation of our cultural past, different techniques are applied. I will explain it in
detail on the following paragraphs.

Investigation
I interviewed two professionals to derive a better understanding about the drawing
techniques and the importance of the cultural past. The first interview (see 1) I did was
with the distinguished Hong Kong artist, Mr. Wu1. He first told me that, in order to create
my own artwork, I must do a draft for each piece of artwork. Moreover, he understand
my situation which I need to reveal the importance of the cultural past though the
artwork. Therefore, he told me that I should list out all the history background and the
reason why it is important in order to figure out different kinds of design. Second, I need
to do a color testing in a small piece of paper to test whether the colors match with each
other. Thirdly, I must draw beside a mirror or I must prepare a big mirror because he said
that mirror could reflect the strength and weakness of the drawing. Moreover, I also visit
the artwork exhibition to have a better understanding of the real artwork to look at the
texture and the color (see 8). The second interview (see1) I did was with my Humanities
teacher, Mr. Blackford. He told me that our cultural past was important because it could
let us understand who we were and we could learn about the wisdom of the ancient
people to advance our future development. Moreover, he said that our cultural past could
let us have a broader understanding of the world, which will allow us to understand
different country’s perspective and thoughts because all the heritages or history can
reflect the people’s living style or their perspective in the country.
Creation
I listed out the history and the real stories of each of the Seven Wonders. Then, I started
to sketch a draft (see 2) of each of the Seven Wonders. After completing all the sketches,
I made modifications to improve the artwork. After the sketches, I did a color testing (see
3) on each of the Seven Wonders. After sketches and coloring testing, then I started to
draw my artwork. Before drawing my artwork, I went to art supply shops to buy the
materials required for creating the artwork. In order to buy the suitable products, I had
created a material list (see 4) to list out all the materials before I bought it. After I brought
all the materials that I want, I started my drawing. Since I understand the basic technique
of drawing, therefore, I have no problem on creating the artwork. In order to have a great
time management, I created a timetable (see 5) for creating the products. During the
process of creating the artwork, I used different kinds of techniques to complete the
artwork so that it can reveal different cultural backgrounds of the Seven Wonders. The
techniques I used were mainly using colors to create different kinds of impression to
present different history background. For all my drawings, I try to use the same series of
color to create the whole drawing to reveal the history background and to make

relationship of the seven paintings, since all the seven paintings are in a series. Apply this
technique are the best way to achieve my goal because it can raise people’s attention to
the artwork, since the color was different from the original and all the colors are matches
with the cultural past of each of the Wonders. Therefore, this technique can help me to
promote a greater appreciation of our cultural past. After creating all the artworks, I
wrote a paragraph (see 6) for each of the artworks to introduce each of the Wonders.
These two stages are link to the focus area of interaction of human ingenuity because I
show human creativity in these two stages. I think of different techniques of creating the
artwork and hold interviews with professionals.
Research
In order to convince others to have a greater appreciation of our cultural past, I collected
different kinds of information from different media. For the primary source, I conducted
interviews with distinguished Hong Kong artist, art teachers and Humanities teacher as
well as visiting an artwork exhibition of the artist who I have interviewed. For the
secondary source, I researched on websites, YouTube, TV programs, magazines,
newspaper articles and books.
Primary source:
Interview with distinguished Hong Kong artist, Wu Jiafu
Mr. Wu is a distinguished Hong Kong artist who is good at landscape painting and figure
painting. In the interview, he explained to me the techniques and the philosophy of
drawing.
Interview with Mr. Blackford
Mr.Blackford is the Humanities teacher of the school. He explained to me the importance
of the cultural past and why we need to understand it.
Penetrating Warmth- Wu Jiafu Solo Exhibition
There are different kinds of gallery in the exhibition; this exhibition enables me to look at
the real paintings so that I have a clear vision on the color and texture.

Secondary source:
Websites
I visited different kinds of websites in relation to the history of the seven wonders and the
techniques of drawing and sketching. This let me have a brief understanding on the
history and the techniques.
6|Page
Books
I went to the library to borrow books about seven wonders. Books can provide a deep and
detailed history, which can give me a deeper understanding on the Wonders.
Youtube
I visited on Youtube to look at video clips about the Seven Wonders. Since the graphic is
moving, it can give me a greater image and idea of the seven wonders, which can fulfill
the imperfection of static images.

TV program
A TV program was shown on the television about the heritage around the world;
therefore, the program also introduced the Seven Wonders. TV program is easy to
understand and the graphic is beautiful and nice. Since television is big and the
resolution is high, this gives me a greater image in my brain and it just as if I am visiting
the Seven Wonders.
Magazines
I have read magazines about people perceptive and feeling towards Seven Wonders as
well as the feelings about the country of themselves had elected to be the Seven Wonders.
This can let me to understand people’s thoughts and feelings, in order to create a good
artwork to promote a greater appreciation.

Analysis

Inspiration and decisions made

The inspiration of my seven paintings of the Seven Wonders is inspired due to the
different cultural past of each of the Wonders, which I will describe underneath

7|Page
Christ Redeemer (Brazil)

I did not put much special techniques on this drawing; the inspiration of the drawing is
from the love and faith of the citizen in Brazil2. I want to portray an impression of the
kindness of God and the spirit of God who loves us all. Therefore, I change a little bit on
the portion of the figure of the god. Originally, the god’s hands will not be that big and
wide, but I want to reveal the message of god who has been protecting the citizens in
Brazil for more than hundreds of years. Therefore, I extend the arm and the upper body to
make it become bigger. Moreover, I change the background to cloud because I want to
show the god is right up on the sky helping everyone in the world, which is one of the
main Brazilian belief.

Great Wall of China (China)

This was the artwork that I apply most drawing techniques. The reason for applying this
technique is that it reveals the cultural past of China. The inspiration is from a photo3 of
The Great Wall of China during the fall season. In the photo, all the leaves are fallen on
the mountains. Therefore, when I first look at it, I can see the mountains turned into
orange and a little bit red. After looking at this photo, I started to think about the
historical background of China and the Great Wall in order to figure out the idea and try
to link to the photo that I had seen. At last, I decided to enhance the redness of the leave,
which I turned the whole mountains into red. In order to make a distinct contrast, I
changed the stairs into black and white color to reflect with the color of red. I enhance the
color of red because I want to reveal that The Great Wall of China is for war and fighting.
Furthermore, the color of red can show the impression of moral integrality and braveness.

Chichen Itza (Mexico)

The inspiration of this artwork is I want to reveal the impression and atmosphere of bless.
Because Chichen Itza is a place for religious ceremony4, therefore, all the Mexican think
that it is celestial and sacred. So this inspires me to use the main color of yellow and
brown to depict the impression and meaning of Chichen Itza.

Taj Mahal (India)

The inspiration of this artwork is from the story of this palace5. This palace is actually a
tomb for Queen. It is because when the Queen dies; the King misses her deeply and build
a place for her to live, which is Taj Mahal. Therefore, I change the whole color to a tone
of black, white and grey to portray the impression of sadness.

Colosseum (Italy)

The inspiration of this artwork is from the function of the Colosseum, the function of
Colossem is for fighting among people and animals6. Therefore, I deepen the color to
depict the impression of seriousness and leisure because it is supposed to be a place
entertainment for the royal family to watch. Anyway, on the other hand, it implies for
fighting and death. Therefore, the sky is so calm and cloudless.

Machu Picchu (Peru)

The inspiration of this artwork is from a website7 that I read. The website shows that this
city had been lost and founded back by the scientists, which is very amazing and
unbelievable that everything is still well-preserved. Therefore, I choose to apply the color
of white and I apply a lot of thinners oils to make it transparent and thin to create a
impression of mysteriousness and loss.

Research

The information I found had both change and support to my different ideas.

Interview with distinguished Hong Kong artist, Wu Jiafu

This interview is very relevant because Mr. Wu is an artist that boldly applied acrylics
onto Chinese rice paper and combined the painting techniques from China and the West.
This can prove that his idea is unique and creative. Therefore, he inspires me a lot on
creating the artwork with special texture and color according to different subject. He also
teaches me that the artwork must be creative and meaningful instead of just drawing the
heritage out. On the other hand, Mr. Wu had given me many examples and ideas of
creating the artwork. He teaches me to jump out of the box to think differently and

wisely. After this interview, it really let me understand on creating a meaningful artwork
instead of a normal painting.
Interview with Mr. Blackford
This information is very useful because it is very hard to find information about the
importance of cultural past directly in the secondary sources. Therefore, Mr.Blackford
exactly explains and answers why we need to care about our cultural past clearly and
deeply. This can help me to archive my goal because in order to understand the
importance, than I can reveal it through my paintings to promote a greater appreciation of
our cultural past.
Penetrating Warmth- Wu Jiafu Solo Exhibition
This visit is extremely useful because it let me understand the powerfulness of artwork
and to look at the paintings in real to see the texture and the colors. Moreover, there is
exactly a painting of Great Wall China. He uses different techniques to draw the Great
Wall with various colors and texture. It is a clear example of the knowledge that he told
me in the interview about how to apply different kinds of texture and color according to
different subject. Moreover, this exhibition has inspired me mentally, which makes me
understand that artwork arouse people to think and explore apart from visional
appreciation. This let me to have a greater confidence to promote a greater appreciation
of our cultural past through my paintings to people.
Websites, Books, Youtube, TV program, Magazines
All these information found out is very relevant because it can help me understand well
on the history and the feelings and opinions of the public towards the seven wonders. To
understand the history is to let me understand the value and the preciousness of the
Wonders, since I know very little about every wonders. Moreover, understanding the
feelings and opinions of the public towards the seven wonders has made me understand
their perspective clearly; therefore, I can promote a greater appreciation essentially. In
addition, it can help me to develop my understanding of “Human Ingenuity” because I
have to find information and question the issues to promote a greater appreciation of our
cultural past during the creation of the products.

Conclusion

The goal has been achieved. My goal is to create artwork of the Seven Wonders
of the World to promote a greater appreciation of our cultural past. The choice of my
AOI is “Human Ingenuity” which is appropriate because I need to create the artwork of
the Seven Wonders.

Regarding the planning stage, it is successful because I have a clear planning for
research and interview. During the planning stage, I have divided the research into two
main categories, which are the historical background/value of the Seven Wonders and
different kinds of drawing techniques. Then, I planned different kinds of research under
10 | P a g e
these two categories. It is successful because it covers all aspects of the research.
Moreover, the planned research is detailed and thoughtful, which makes it effective and
efficient when creating the product. However, owing to the limited time, I cannot finish
all the things that I have planned. Although my planning covers all aspects of the project
but the time does not allow me to finish it all. Therefore, next time I should consider
more about the time, so that I can accomplish all the things that I have planned.

Referring to the research stage, it is moderate because I can find some very good
information but some of the information I cannot find. Anyway, all the interviews and
research was excellent and great! It helps me a lot to archive my goal and finish the
product. I was very impressed in the interviews and some of the wonderful books that I
have found. Every person who I have interviewed teaches me and assists me a lot in the
research part because I think it will be extremely hard for me to research the information
though other media without their advices. It was the most effective way to do it because I
can ask the interviewer any question when I get confused and do not understand.
Nevertheless, I encountered a problem during my research. One of the problem is I
cannot find books about some of the wonders in the library, which I did not expect
before. Therefore, I focus more on the internet and the videos to find more information.

With regard to the creation stage, it is quite successful, because it is easy for me to
draw the Seven Wonders out. However, one problem that I encountered during the
creation of my product is that it is very hard to create the huge impression of the Seven
Wonders. Therefore, I add some human on the artworks to reflect the portion of the
Wonders, showing that the Wonders are huge in contrast with human.

Referring to my product, I think it has helped me to achieve my goal successfully.

Through the survey (see 7) of fifty people, a hundred percent of them said that they were
amazed by the ancient heritage, and they would like to learn more about their cultural
past. Most of them replied that they would start to have awareness about the history and
have faith on their cultural past because now they understand the beauty and the wisdom
of the ancient people after looking at my paintings. My artwork has aroused them to
explore and understand more apart from the Seven Wonders. Furthermore, it has raised
people’s concern on the cultural past, and stimulates them to go there in person after
viewing the spectacular images of the Seven Wonders. It can be seen that my product
has helped me to achieve the goal because now people start to have a greater appreciation
of our cultural past. Moreover, this result surprises me because initially I worried that the
artworks were not powerful and impressive enough to attract the people to have a greater
appreciation of our cultural past, since everyone had different perspective on looking the
artwork.

Through this project, I have learnt a lot more about the focus Area of Interaction,
“Human Ingenuity”. I have learnt that not just creating the product is human ingenuity,
whereas the whole process is a part of it, because I showed human creativity in doing
sketches, design, statement, interview and plan, these are all about creation. It enables me
to enjoy and explore the relationships between aesthetics, technology and ethics.

11 | P a g e
Moreover, I have found that the consequence of creating the product is bigger than I
predicted. A lot of people feel appreciate and start to have interest of our cultural past.

After completing my project, I want to find out more about how huge the impact
of the artwork can create. I want to have a clear understanding of how artwork can attract
people and how to create a marvelous artwork that can really influence and touches
people’s heart, because during this project I have a doubt on the impact of my artwork,
and I am always afraid that it is not powerful and effective enough.
