Conditions

You have been given an AN/PRC-119 or an installed AN/VRC-90

SINCGARS radio, ECCM fill device with cable, and SOI.

Standards

You must answer all check on learning questions correctly and operate the
SINCGARS radio in the Single Channel (SC) and substation Frequency
Hopping (FH) secure modes IAW TM-5820-890-10-1. To receive a GO for
this lesson unit, you will complete the written test with 70% accuracy.

Safety
Instructions

The student will be informed of lithium battery hazards and handling of

antennae when working with a manpack and warned of high voltage at J1 if
working with a vehicular radio set. A Safety Handout is provided in this
Student Guide.

Performance
Measures

a. Procedures to Prepare a Manpack for Operation:

Step
Procedures
1.

Assemble the manpack:

Stand the Receiver-Transmitter (RT) on front panel
guards.
Place battery box on bottom of RT, aligning battery
box systems connector with RT systems connector.
Secure the battery box using four latches.
Inspect battery for damage, corrosion, or leakage.
For a new battery, remove the round piece of tape
from the connector and place the tape on the side of
the battery. For a used battery, note battery life
condition written on the tape.

2.

Open battery box cover, place battery in box, mate

connectors, and secure cover with latch.
Connect manpack antenna and handset to RT.
Set/Check battery life condition:
Set FCTN switch to LD.
Depress keypad BATT CALL button.
Enter 00 for a new battery or use the numbers
written on the side of a used battery.
Press STO button to start clock.

During operation, check battery life by setting FCTN

switch to SQ ON, depressing keypad BATT CALL
button, and writing numbers displayed on the side of
battery (when removed from battery box).

STUDENT HANDOUTS

SH-1

88M30
Single Channel Ground/Airborne Radio System (SINCGARS) Operation
721-308-07

Student Handout #1
SINCGARS-V Radio Operation Safety Warning
1.

A lithium battery used with your manpack radio contains pressurized sulfur
dioxide gas. The gas is toxic, and the battery MUST NOT be abused in any way
which may cause the battery to rupture.

2.

DO NOT heat, short circuit, crush, puncture, mutilate, or disassemble batteries.

3.

DO NOT USE any battery which shows signs of damage, such as bulging,
swelling, disfigurement, a brown liquid in the plastic wrap, a swollen wrap, etc.

4.

DO NOT test lithium batteries for capacity.

5.

DO NOT recharge lithium batteries.

6.

DO NOT dispose of lithium batteries with ordinary trash/refuse. Turn in

discharged batteries to local supply.

7.

If the battery compartment becomes hot to the touch, if you hear a hissing or
burping (i.e. battery venting), or smell irritating gas (sulfur dioxide).
IMMEDIATELY TURN OFF the equipment and leave the area.
1. Allow the equipment to cool at least one hour.
2. Remove and replace the battery after the equipment has cooled to the touch.
3. If there is a safety incident, or if you believe a safety hazard exists, notify
your local Safety Office/Officer, file a Product Quality Deficiency Report.
SF Form 368, and notify the CECOM Safety Office, Ft. Monmouth, NJ at
AV 995-3112.

8.

DO NOT use a Halon type fire extinguisher on a lithium battery fire.

9.

In the event of a fire near a lithium battery, rapid cooling of the battery is
important. Flood the equipment with water, or use a carbon dioxide
extinguisher. Control of the equipment fire and cooling may prevent the battery
from venting and potentially exposing lithium metal. In the event that the
lithium metal becomes involved in fire, the use of a graphite based Class D fire
extinguisher is recommended.

10.

DO NOT store batteries in unused equipment.

11.

DO NOT store lithium batteries with other hazardous materials. Keep them
away from open flame or heat.

12.

DO NOT place BA-5800 lithium batteries in fire or water, they may explode.
