Inthechapteronfunctionsyoustudiedthetransformationof y = f (x ) into y = af ( x p ) + q .In
otherwords,sawtheeffectthattheparameters a, p and q haveonthegraphof f (x ) .
InChapter5youlookedatwhateffecttheseparametershaveonthetrigonometricgraphsofsin,cos
andtan.Yousawtherethattheeffectsarethesameonthetrigonometricgraphsasongraphsfor
algebraicfunctionssoyoureallyhavenothingnewtolearnsolongasyoucandosketchesofthe
parentfunctionssin x ,cos x andtan x .
Inonerespect,though,thegraphsofthetrigonometricfunctionsaredifferentfromthoseofalgebraic
expressions.Theyaredifferentinthattheyareperiodicwhichmeansthattheirshapesrepeat
themselvesovercertainintervals.
Whathelpsindeterminingthe x interceptsistheperiodofthefunction.Forexample,given
