    The English language has evolved significantly over time from its origins as Old English after the 5th century AD. Old English was influenced by Latin and Germanic languages [Middle English] and later underwent major changes following the Norman conquest of 1066 with the introduction of large amounts of French vocabulary. Throughout the Middle Ages, English continued to absorb words from Latin, French and other languages and emerged as a new form of standardized English. The introduction of printing in the 15th century helped spread this form of English and establish its grammar and spelling. Modern English emerged in the 16th century and spread globally with British colonial expansion, developing different regional varieties while continuing to adopt vocabulary from other languages over time.
