PRESIDENTS MESSAGE

HEYOKA AND HISTORY

Welcome to another season of

T-Bird basketball.
When I accepted the presidency at Casper
College this past summer, I was drawn to the
institutions excellent academic reputation
and its strong tie to the local community. An
important part of that community relationship is
our solid athletic program.
Over our history, we have earned 25
NJCAA regional championships in volleyball,
basketball and rodeo, while producing studentathletes that have represented our college
with excellence. Casper College is never an
easy place to travel to for our opponents, as
evidenced by a quick walk through Swede
Erickson Thunderbird Gymnasium and a view
at our many championship banners and our
sports hall
of fame.
In coming here, our athletes know that
the Casper community places high value on
achievement whether it is on the court or
in the classroom. Our basketball teams build
a sense of community in Casper, bringing
students, alumni, residents and sports fans
together to cheer on their
favorite team.
I would also like to acknowledge the
T-Bird Booster Club directors and their many
contributors who help the T-Birds soar. For
example, our boosters recently provided the
resources needed to make sure our basketball
teams are webcast live during each contest.
Thanks to the tremendous support of our
boosters and community business partners,
the T-Birds are able to compete each season at
a high level.
Good luck this season to our players
and coaches.

The story of the Casper College mascot, Heyoka, starts with longtime Casper
College physical science instructor Norm Weis. Weis wanted a mascot to
represent the young community college nestled in the foothills of Casper
Mountain. He chose the name Heyoka, a Native American word for medicine man.
The Heyoka, among other things, was to watch over his tribe and send away evil
spirits. Casper Colleges Heyoka was hoped to create the kind of spirit that would
send away evil teams. In the fall of 1958, Weis found the perfect student to fit the
bill as the first Heyoka, Leo Sanchez, who he observed singing and dancing and
generally hamming it up. The two worked on the original costume, which
consisted of rabbit fur stretched over a football helmet, epoxy eyes and a
fiberglass beak. The nearly 50 feathers adorning the wings were all hand sewn by
the two men. The goal was for Native American authenticity. Using the costume
as a model in 1995 Casper College alumnus and sculptor Chris Navarro crafted
Spirit of the Thunderbird, a bronze statue now on the front lawn of the college.
Since that time there have been three Heyokas. That first one was retired many
years ago. Heyoka was replaced with Thunderbird in 2004.
The last Heyoka is now on display in the lobby of the Swede Erickson
Thunderbird Gym.

Go T-Birds!

HEAD COACH

DWIGHT GUNNARE

The One Consistent:

Winning

TBIRDS.CC

After 33 years of coaching, Dwight Gunnare

has learned that some things change and
some things remain the same.

The game, the players and the

athleticism of his athletes have improved
over the years. So the way he coaches
has been modified a bit.
But one thing that has not changed
is the Casper coachs commitment to a
work ethic and winning. He is still at work
before many people have their breakfast.
Coach Gunnare is a detail guy. He
believes that if you get the little things
right the big things will take care of
themselves. Thats why hes at his desk
early, going over drills and practice
schedules, reviewing tape and planning
individual workouts for his Thunderbirds.
He loves what he does.
Thunderbird fans love it too. Gunnare
enters his eighth season at Casper
College, where his teams have amassed
181 wins against only 54 defeats (.770).
Since his arrival, two championship
banners wave at the east end rafters of
Thunderbird Gymnasium.
Gunnare enters his 33rd year of
coaching this fall and the South Dakota
native is just as motivated and driven as
ever. He brings energy, enthusiasm and
focus to the court every day.
Gunnares system throws a lot at
his players. Because of the changing
dynamic of womens basketball, some
of which emphasizes team over skill
development, that individual work is
included, too.

The fact that Gunnare would hold

the Thunderbird program in such good
hands came as no surprise to those who
followed his career in Montana, where his
high school teams at Colstrip compiled a
175-87 record in 11 seasons (and won a
pair of state championships). He followed
that up with a stint at Miles Community
College. In six seasons there his Pioneers
won 126 games in six seasons (.717
winning percentage). In his final season
(07-08), Miles posted a 31-2 record
and lost in the Region IX tournament
finals to Western Nebraska.
Shortly after that athletic director Bill
Landen talked Gunnare into moving south
from Miles to Casper.
Gunnare has three regional Coach
of the Year plaques since his arrival.
Following his 2010 teams run to the
NJCAA Final Four, Gunnare received
Caspers Coach of the Year honors from
the Chamber of Commerce.
His teams have met standards off the
court, too. Three times the Thunderbirds
have earned academic All-America
team honors. He has coached numerous
individual academic All-Americans.
When asked about what makes his
program so successful, Gunnare points to
two things: hard work and good fortune.
When I began at the high school
level, I studied and I prepared, Gunnare
says, admitting that not many coaches

logged the miles he did. I always

felt it was important to have a good
understanding of the opponent.
He would drive hours and hours
scouting teams and watching games to
gain that understanding. He still
does that.
He expects that same hard work ethic
out of his team.
Real students of the game will notice
a couple of things about Gunnares
teams. First, they will always be ready by
tournament time. That is due in part to
how much he expects out of his players.
He installs a lot of looks, and by seasons
end the Thunderbirds can show them all
and generally play at any tempo.
He believes in defense. His teams
have been among the regional leaders in
points allowed and field goal percentage
every year.
Gunnares program is coming off
another great year (22-9). During an
era of unprecedented parity in Region
IX, a 20-win season is noteworthy.
Nevertheless, Gunnare and his
Thunderbirds set a goal every year: a trip
to the national tournament. That takes
winning the regional title. While Gunnare
doesnt want to take away from last years
effort, he is driven this year to take his
T-Birds just a little further
South, that is, to Texas in March.

ASSISTANT COACH

SARAH MCNAMEE

Sarah McNamee is in her third

year as an assistant coach at Casper
College. A Miles City, Mont. native, McNamee

played high school basketball at Custer County

District High School where she was a three-time
All-Conference and All-State player, Class A state
tournament MVP, Treasure State MVP, a member of
the Montana Wyoming All-Star Game and is currently
the fth all-time leading scorer in school history.
McNamee started off her college career at Miles
Community College where she played for head coach
Dwight Gunnare. McNamee and her team ended the
two years with a 57-7 record and were Region IX
runners-up. McNamee was rst team All-Conference,
rst team All-Tournament and still holds the record at
MCC for most points scored in a game with 39 and the
most three-pointers made in a game with seven. After
MCC, McNamee nished her career at MSU-Billings
where she was the GNAC Conference Newcomer of
the Year. McNamee was an assistant coach three
years ago at the University of Montana Western in
Dillon, Montana.
There are unique challenges you have to deal with
when you have seven international players, McNamee
says. Once we get past the language barriers, team
chemistry will be a huge factor in the success of
the season.

The first renovation phase of the new Parkway Plaza Hotel & Convention Centre, which is currently underway, includes
faster high speed internet and numerous guest room enhancements including; implementing a new triple sheet/new
bedding package with down comforters, flat screen tv's in all guestrooms, new guestroom carpet, ergonomic chairs,
new lighting package, new case goods, new pillow top mattresses, updated bathrooms and an introduction of a new
executive section of rooms with improved guest room amenities. Additionally, there will be design upgrades to all
public spaces and corridors throughout the hotel, including a redesigned and modern new lobby, extensive
enhancements to the exterior curb appeal of the hotel, starting with a resealing and repaving of the parking lot, which
has been completed. Numerous mechanical and HVAC updates throughout the hotel are also planned.
Come by today for a tour of our newly renovated Executive King Showroom.

WOMENS BASKETBALL

Coach Dwight Gunnare has taken full advantage of

the change with a total of seven overseas athletes
filling out the roster.

They are all very talented, says Gunnare. We would like to give this
a chance.
Not to say that there arent inherent challenges in the process. When
recruiting, coaches have to rely solely on testimony from a contact
or video highlights. Once committed, there is a bit of transition from
how the game is played back home to its execution in the States. The
language of basketball is pretty universal but occasionally there is a
miscommunication or a concept that is lost in translation.
Despite the obstacles, Gunnare and assistant coach, Sarah McNamee,
are condent that their selections will result in T-Bird victories.
Returning sophomore point guard, Ada Yelcin, started all last season,
shot 80 percent from the free throw line, and led the team in three
pointers. Gunnare expects her experience and skill to place her as a top
scorer again this year.
Yelcin is joined by Turkish compatriots Rojin Karahan from Istanbul
and Gulten Altunbulak from Alanya. Karahan is a 510 freshman combo
guard with good ball skills and the 56 guard, Altunbulak, is a three-point
shooting specialist.
Marina Fernandez is a very mobile 60 forward from Barcelona,
Spain. She plays the perimeter, shoots the three well, and has already
gained the attention of some upper division programs.
Coming in from Worcestershire, England, Rebecca Taylor will be
adding some height to the forward position at 62.
Monika Radomska from Wolomin, Poland, is a 511 freshman guard
who also has Division 1 prospects after she gains some valuable minutes
on the hardwood of the Swede.
Thanks to some great contacts, Gunnare was fortunate to pick up 60
Ruth Nwokora from Lagos, Nigeria and is anticipating good things from
her at the post position.
Sophomore Grace Weeks, substantially developed as her playing time
increased last year, will be a valuable asset in the paint.
Josie Sewell, 511 post, put up some great numbers last year and is
the type of athlete that Gunnare likes to coach because, she really works
her tail off!
Gunnare is pleased with the progress that sophomore guard, Alyssa
Big Man, has made over the summer. Big Man clocked the most game
time of anyone last year. She was in the top three for points and led the
T-Birds in accuracy from the free-throw line.
Gabby Johnson led the team last year in rebounds and blocks (197
and 22 respectively) as well as averaging over 10 points per game.
Count on the Casper native to once again dominate on the court.
Jalicia Williams is a highly-skilled freshman point guard from
Scottsdale, Arizona and should transition well into the T-birds team play.
55 at Kayla Evans and 510 Justine Hirsig are both incoming
from Cheyenne East High School. Gunnare and McNamee were very
impressed with what Evans did last year and what she accomplished at
the state tournament.
She is a tough athlete and one of the better on-ball defenders that we
have seen all year in the state of Wyoming, says Gunnare.
Hirsig, spent a lot of time playing inside, but because of her athleticism
Gunnare would like to move her to the perimeter.
The coaches have done an outstanding job putting together a
team with talent and depth to spare. With six athletes over six feet or
taller, Gunnare has More size than Ive ever had on a roster, and is
understandably excited about the potential that can bring.
Region IX has become extremely competitive over the past 10 or so
years however, and the best teams on paper dont always win. But if
these Lady T-birds stay true to Gunnares program, we can be hopeful
that they will eliminate the sting of last years early tournament exit.

SIZE AND
DIVERSITY
If you havent heard by now, the
NJCAA has scrapped the cap on
international recruiting.

RANCH CAMPUS CAMPAIGN

The Casper College Ranch Campus provides an opportunity to expand our academic programs, improve
student learning, and enhance the rodeo program.

Competitive Excellence and a Recruiters Dream

In addition to a new 45,000 square foot indoor rodeo arena to help our rodeo team remain one of the top community college
programs in the country, there will also be space in the other barns for students to board their horses and keep roping steers and
calves as well as bucking horses and bulls for practice. The livestock judging team will also benefit by having more livestock to use
for its practice sessions.
The barns, meats lab, classroom space and the 120 irrigated acres of cropland will attract students to Casper Colleges programs
from around Wyoming, the region and the nation.

But, we need your help!
