PRESIDENTS MESSAGE
The story of the Casper College mascot, Heyoka, starts with longtime Casper
College physical science instructor Norm Weis. Weis wanted a mascot to
represent the young community college nestled in the foothills of Casper
Mountain. He chose the name Heyoka, a Native American word for medicine man.
The Heyoka, among other things, was to watch over his tribe and send away evil
spirits. Casper Colleges Heyoka was hoped to create the kind of spirit that would
send away evil teams. In the fall of 1958, Weis found the perfect student to fit the
bill as the first Heyoka, Leo Sanchez, who he observed singing and dancing and
generally hamming it up. The two worked on the original costume, which
consisted of rabbit fur stretched over a football helmet, epoxy eyes and a
fiberglass beak. The nearly 50 feathers adorning the wings were all hand sewn by
the two men. The goal was for Native American authenticity. Using the costume
as a model in 1995 Casper College alumnus and sculptor Chris Navarro crafted
Spirit of the Thunderbird, a bronze statue now on the front lawn of the college.
Since that time there have been three Heyokas. That first one was retired many
years ago. Heyoka was replaced with Thunderbird in 2004.
The last Heyoka is now on display in the lobby of the Swede Erickson
Thunderbird Gym.

WOMENS BASKETBALL
They are all very talented, says Gunnare. We would like to give this
a chance.
Not to say that there arent inherent challenges in the process. When
recruiting, coaches have to rely solely on testimony from a contact
or video highlights. Once committed, there is a bit of transition from
how the game is played back home to its execution in the States. The
language of basketball is pretty universal but occasionally there is a
miscommunication or a concept that is lost in translation.
Despite the obstacles, Gunnare and assistant coach, Sarah McNamee,
are condent that their selections will result in T-Bird victories.
Returning sophomore point guard, Ada Yelcin, started all last season,
shot 80 percent from the free throw line, and led the team in three
pointers. Gunnare expects her experience and skill to place her as a top
scorer again this year.
Yelcin is joined by Turkish compatriots Rojin Karahan from Istanbul
and Gulten Altunbulak from Alanya. Karahan is a 510 freshman combo
guard with good ball skills and the 56 guard, Altunbulak, is a three-point
shooting specialist.
Marina Fernandez is a very mobile 60 forward from Barcelona,
Spain. She plays the perimeter, shoots the three well, and has already
gained the attention of some upper division programs.
Coming in from Worcestershire, England, Rebecca Taylor will be
adding some height to the forward position at 62.
Monika Radomska from Wolomin, Poland, is a 511 freshman guard
who also has Division 1 prospects after she gains some valuable minutes
on the hardwood of the Swede.
Thanks to some great contacts, Gunnare was fortunate to pick up 60
Ruth Nwokora from Lagos, Nigeria and is anticipating good things from
her at the post position.
Sophomore Grace Weeks, substantially developed as her playing time
increased last year, will be a valuable asset in the paint.
Josie Sewell, 511 post, put up some great numbers last year and is
the type of athlete that Gunnare likes to coach because, she really works
her tail off!
Gunnare is pleased with the progress that sophomore guard, Alyssa
Big Man, has made over the summer. Big Man clocked the most game
time of anyone last year. She was in the top three for points and led the
T-Birds in accuracy from the free-throw line.
Gabby Johnson led the team last year in rebounds and blocks (197
and 22 respectively) as well as averaging over 10 points per game.
Count on the Casper native to once again dominate on the court.
Jalicia Williams is a highly-skilled freshman point guard from
Scottsdale, Arizona and should transition well into the T-birds team play.
55 at Kayla Evans and 510 Justine Hirsig are both incoming
from Cheyenne East High School. Gunnare and McNamee were very
impressed with what Evans did last year and what she accomplished at
the state tournament.
She is a tough athlete and one of the better on-ball defenders that we
have seen all year in the state of Wyoming, says Gunnare.
Hirsig, spent a lot of time playing inside, but because of her athleticism
Gunnare would like to move her to the perimeter.
The coaches have done an outstanding job putting together a
team with talent and depth to spare. With six athletes over six feet or
taller, Gunnare has More size than Ive ever had on a roster, and is
understandably excited about the potential that can bring.
Region IX has become extremely competitive over the past 10 or so
years however, and the best teams on paper dont always win. But if
these Lady T-birds stay true to Gunnares program, we can be hopeful
that they will eliminate the sting of last years early tournament exit.
SIZE AND
DIVERSITY
If you havent heard by now, the
NJCAA has scrapped the cap on
international recruiting.

WOMENS BASKETBALL
In addition to a new 45,000 square foot indoor rodeo arena to help our rodeo team remain one of the top community college
programs in the country, there will also be space in the other barns for students to board their horses and keep roping steers and
calves as well as bucking horses and bulls for practice. The livestock judging team will also benefit by having more livestock to use
for its practice sessions.
The barns, meats lab, classroom space and the 120 irrigated acres of cropland will attract students to Casper Colleges programs
from around Wyoming, the region and the nation.
For just $3000, you can sponsor a stall for one of our student athletes!
Many other naming opportunities exist, including the new arena and a conference center.
