Gliese Catalogue of Nearby Stars
The c
is a frequently referenced, modern star catalog of stars
located within 25 parsecs of the Earth.

^n 57 German astronomer Wilhelm Gliese published his first star catalog of nearly one
thousand stars located within 20 parsecs of Earth, listing their known properties and ordered by
right ascension.[] He published a significant update to his original catalog as the Y
in 0 , extending the range out to 22 parsecs.[2] ^tems from the first catalog were
designated and the stars were numbered from 05.[] The update extended the list to
,52 stars and the stars were then designated and numbered from .0 05.0. The
fractional numbers allowed stars to be added to the original catalog and preserve the right
ascension order.
A supplement to the catalog, published in 70 by Richard van der Riet Woolley and associates,
extended the range out to 25 parsecs. This supplement added catalog numbers in the range 00
50 using the now deprecated prefix. Stars in this range now also use the prefix.[]
Gliese published the second edition of the catalog in 7 in collaboration with Hartmut Jahrei.
The combined catalog is now commonly referred to as the
(GJ) catalog.[5] This
catalog was published with two tables: Table uses the designations for entries
numbered 0002 for confirmed nearby stars; Table 2 uses the designations for
entries numbered 20025 for suspected nearby stars.[] Since the publication of this catalog all
of the stars in the combined catalog and succeeding supplements are designated by the preferred
prefix.
The releases of the different versions of this catalog over the years also documents the
progression of publication from the printed form of the earlier catalogs to publication in
electronic form of the later catalogs, as is now the case with most other large catalogs.
Some stars are best known by the original catalog number, such as Gliese 5 and Gliese 70.
The Gliese catalog stars are frequent targets of study due to their proximity to Earth.
