Metacognitive Essay
During the scope on 10 weeks the assignments given in my Writing 2 class have helped
me understand more about myself as a writer, reader, reviser and my work ethic, I learned many
new topics like genre, discourse community, and used sources available to me like the university
library. All these things helped me gain understanding of what is a head of my academic career.
What I learned about myself as a writer is that I like to take my time in assignments. My
method is structured and must work around my schedule of work study, physics, studying and
physics lab. To make these assignments as stress free as possible I noticed I take frequent breaks
to help me gather my thoughts or just to relax if I just had a prolonged writing session. During
this course, I also learned about how I am as a reader. During the first four-weeks of this course
many readings were assigned to the class. During these assignments, I waited till our class ended
or the next day to start these readings. Since many of these reading was accompanied by online
As a reviser, my biggest issue was to accurately tell my peers what to improve. During
the first peer review on the first writing project I wrote very little criticism and was more biased
toward the complements. I also noticed that I wrote short phrases, as time went by I moved
toward having equal representation in criticism and praise on the students paper as well as

writing clear and coherent sentences for improvements and mistakes. Revising my own papers, I
learned that it is hard to find mistakes when viewing your own paper. So, whenever I have a
physical copy I use pens, and highlighters to mark up what I need to improve on my next draft.
This really helps me since the color helps mark the problem areas and is easy to find on the white
paper. When it comes to thinking about my assignments ad coming up with an argument It takes
me a while to formulate a strong thesis. Since these assignments are due in a span of two weeks
it gives me ample time to think about my argument. Overall, I learned through theses 10-weeks
The Writing 2 course goals I learned about genre, discourse communities, library
resources, and how to analyze readings. I learned that genre is very complex and often follow
tropes that define those genres. In one of our first readings the example given where about
country music and how this genre has a structure and many of the country songs follow the
structure. Genre theory is also being a major factor on how these genres came to be. In this
theory genre are created and developed to generalize how to respond in specific situations.
Without a genre, it would make writing more lengthy and tedious not knowing how to respond in
a situation.
I also learned a lot about discourse communities, the six criteria that make discourse
communities helped describe how we view genre and how it is essential that these communities
communicate and actively be involved. Analyzing these criteria, I learned of rhetoric and
rhetorical devices that these discourse communities use. The choices the author makes
contribute how the tone of the paper will come out. Within context I learned that writing differs
within each subject and writing well in those subjects you need to shape your writing with the
Learning about myself and the course goals my portfolio and revisions is an accurate
work ethic and my ability to plan when I am going to work on an assignment, on the other hand
my weakness is the inability to have my thoughts accurate expressed on the first try and the
frequent writers blocks when coming up with arguments or detailed explanations to support my
thesis. What changed during this course is my confidence level on my writing has improved this
course has helped me understand how to analyze papers and why the author chose the specific
lexis and rhetorical devices. The readings have helped me gain new knowledge about genres,
writing first drafts, and discourse communities. All this new information has helped me better
understand how reading and writing can vary greatly between genres. Going forth into my
academic career this will help me portray and understand the standard on my respective field of
work.
