Verbs

I. Content and Standards:


CC.L.3.1a Explain the function of nouns, pronouns, verbs, adjectives, and adverbs in
general and their functions in particular sentences.
CC.L.3.2c Use commas and quotation marks in dialogue.

II. Prerequisites:
Students should be able to identify a nouns and subject nouns.
Students should be able to identify the subject and predicate in sentences.

III. Instructional Objective:


Students will be able to distinguish verbs in predicates.
Students will be able to identify action verbs, helping verbs, and linking verbs in
sentences.

IV. Instructional Procedures:


Before: (5 minutes)
Teacher will briefly review with students that nouns name a person, place, or
thing. Whereas a word that tells what people or things do is a verb. Verbs show
action.
Teacher will discuss with students that a complete sentence has two parts: a
subject and a predicate. The predicate has a verb. It tells what the subject of the
sentence does.
During: (10 minutes)
Teacher will use a PowerPoint presentation to introduce students to action,
linking, and helping verbs.
Teacher will play the video Verb Rap.
Students will then identify the subject, the predicate, and the action verb, helping,
or linking verb in each sentence frame.
Students will be given Verb Phrases handout and will place it into their interactive
notebooks along with definitions for main and helping verbs using glue and
scissors.

After: (10 minutes)


Students will be given Verb Task Cards.
Student pairs will complete the Verb Task worksheet.
Students will then exchange their descriptions with other pairs and discuss why
they used each action verb.
Students will then participate in Verb Charades activity.

Glue and scissors

Formative Teacher observation, Exit Pass
Summative quiz

VII. Accommodations and Modifications:


No students with IEPs.
ESL students (2) can request to have sentences read orally to them.
