    Possessive Nouns

    I. Content and Standards:


    CC.1.5.3. G Demonstrate command of the conventions of standard English when
    speaking, based on Grade 3 level and content.
    CC.L.3.2. D Form and use possessives.

    II. Prerequisites:
    Students should be able to identify a noun as person, place or thing in a sentence.
    Students should be able to identify a noun as a common or proper noun.
    Students should be able to identify whether a noun is singular or plural.

    III. Instructional Objective:


    Students will be able to determine when a singular noun shows ownership by adding
    an apostrophe and an s to make it a possessive noun.
    Students will be able to determine when a plural noun shows ownership by adding an
    apostrophe.
    Students will be able to show possession of an irregular plural noun by adding an
    apostrophe s

    IV. Instructional Procedures:


    Before: (5 minutes)
    Teacher will briefly review what a noun is, the difference between singular and
    plural nouns, and irregular nouns with students.
    Teacher will use a PowerPoint presentation to introduce Possessive Nouns.
    Teacher will play video from The Electric Company Apostrophe S.
    During: (10 minutes)
    Teacher and students will discuss rules for making nouns either singular
    possessive, plural possessive, and how to make irregular plural nouns possessive.
    Students will then practice changing nouns to show possession on a worksheet
    and will share answers on their personal whiteboards.
    Teacher and students will check for understanding.
    Students will participate in a Possessive Noun game as part of the PowerPoint
    presentation.
    Students will be divided into two teams.
    One student from each team will come to the whiteboard.
    The students will be given a sentence on a slide along with a picture of two
    different flies.
    Each fly will have a possessive noun written above its body.
    The students must determine the correct usage of the possessive noun.
    The students must then swat the correct fly with their flyswatter.
    The students then will have to determine what type of noun it is on the following
    slide.
    After: (10 minutes)
    Students will then independently participate in Possessive Noun Scoot activity.
    Students will be given a post it note with a short sentence containing a possessive
    noun as an Exit Pass.
    Students will place the sentence under the appropriate possessive noun column
    on chart paper.
    Teacher will check for understanding.

    VII. Accommodations and Modifications:


    No students with IEPs.
    ESL students (2) can request to have sentences read orally to them during Scoot.
