Dimensions of fillet weld joint
1. Scope
1.1 This standard specifies T and lap-type joint dimensions for continuous or intermittent fillet weld to
be applied to general steel structures.
1.2 This standard is applicable to both the usual welding methods and MAG welding.
The usual welding methods include shielded metal arc welding, non-gas arc welding, and
submerged arc welding.
2. Classification, dimensions, and forms of fillet weld joint
2.1Classification
Fillet weld is classified as shown in table 1.

2.2Dimensions
Each Dimension of fillet weld joint is defined as illustrated in figures 1 and 2.

Two types of forms are commonly employed in fillet weld joint as illustrated in figures 3 and 4

3. Fillet weld size (Equal leg length*1)
*1: Normally, equal leg length fillet weld is performed.
3.1 Fillet weld size (L) is defined by the edge length of the maximum right-angle isosceles triangle
drawn in the fillet weld bead cross section. (Refer to fig. 1 to 4.)
3.2 The minimum fillet weld size shall be determined based on the thinner thickness (t1) of joint base
metals.
3.3 Both fillet weld sizes of T-type and lap-type joints are equal.
3.4 When one side fillet weld is applied, fillet weld size shall be equal to the one side size for both
side fillet weld joint.
3.5 Intermittent weld size is indicated with weld size (L), weld length (l), pitch (P), and number of
welds (n). Weld length (l) is defined by effective weld length excluding both beginning and ending
edge zones from the total weld length*2. Incomplete weld leg length in the beginning and ending
edge zones shall equal to L or less. (Refer to Fig 8)
*2: Effective weld length is the welded section having the specified fillet weld size.
3.6 Intermittent weld sizes for parallel and staggered weld are the same.
3.7 When applying intermittent fillet weld, be sure to weld both end sections by the same length as
weld length (l) whichever parallel or staggered weld is employed. [The weld pitch at intermediate
section may become shorter than specified pitch (P) in due course.]
4. Fillet weld size (Unequal leg length)
The unequal leg length fillet weld size shall be as illustrated in fig. 5

When specifying unequal leg length fillet weld, indicate the weld symbol, and the fillet sizes L1 and
L2 so that the corresponding leg length location can be identified as illustrated below.

Flange Length = Fillet Size + 5 mm or more
In case a flange length less than the above value is used, weld defects such as under cut or burn
through may result. Coordinate with the Production Engineering Dept for allowance of defects
and/or finished weld form beforehand.

8.1 Continuous weld size
Continuous weld forms, indication examples, and sizes are shown in fig. 7 and table 3.
8.2 Intermittent weld size
Parallel and staggered intermittent weld forms and sizes are shown in fig. 8 and table 4.
NOTE:
In case indications other than those specified in tables 3 and 4 are made, coordinate the details
with the Production Engineering Dept. beforehand.
