CSE30310 Tutorial and Assignment #5 Design of Columns Tutorials

This document provides details for 4 questions related to the design of reinforced concrete columns. Question 1 asks to check if a column is short, determine required reinforcement area, and suitable links. Question 2 asks to design longitudinal reinforcement for a 500x300mm column subjected to axial load and biaxial bending. Question 3 asks to use a simplified method to design reinforcement for a braced slender column with biaxial bending. Question 4 asks to estimate load capacity of a square short column and calculate its maximum moment capacity under an axial load. Design data, column dimensions, reinforcement details and material properties are provided for each question.

CSE30310 Tutorial and Assignment #5 Design of columns

Tutorials:
Q1. A short, braced column is subjected to an ultimate applied axial load of 3000kN and a nominal
moment only. Using the design data given:
1. Check that the column is short;
2. Determine the required area of main reinforcement; and
3. Determine suitable links.
Given:
Characteristic concrete strength fcu = 40N/mm2.
Characteristic strength of main steel fy = 460N/mm2.
Width of column b=350 mm
Depth of column h = 375 mm
Clear height between the end restraints about both axis = 5.0 m
End condition at the top of the column for x-x axis = 1
End condition at the top of the column for y-y axis = 2
End condition at the bottom of the column for x-x axis = 3
End condition at the bottom of the column for y-y axis = 3

Q2. Design the longitudinal reinforcement for the 500 by 300 mm column section if N = 2300 kN, Mx-x =
300 kNm and My-y = 120kNm.
Given:
Characteristic concrete strength fcu = 40 N/mm2.
Characteristic strength of main steel fy = 460 N/mm2.
The column interaction design Chart No.39 is attached.

Q3. Use the simplified method of HK2013 to design the longitudinal reinforcement for the braced slender
column as shown below, for bi-axial bending. The columns effective lengths about both axes are 6.5 m.
Given:
Characteristic concrete strength fcu = 40N/mm2.
Characteristic strength of main steel fy = 460N/mm2.
Axial load N=2500 kN; double curvature bending moments:
Support 1 - M1x=200 kNm, M1y=100 kNm;
Support 2 - M2x=250 kNm, M2y=120 kNm.

Fig.Q3
Q4. Figure Q4 shows a square short column with the dimensions of 600 mm by 600 mm and reinforced
with T32 bars. Consider a 45 mm cover to main steel reinforcement and assume that the characteristic
material strengths are fy = 460 N/mm2 for steel and fcu = 30 N/mm2 for concrete.
(1) Estimate the axial load-carrying capacity (Na) of the column assuming there is no bending and a nominal
eccentricity.
(2) The column is now subjected to equal biaxial bending (the moment about x-x axis is equal to the
moment about y-y axis). Under an axial load of Na/2, calculate the maximum moment the column can
safely resist.
