Syllabus for three years Advanced Diploma Course (third year) in Seed Technology
Session 2016-17
Theory Paper

Time Allowed: 3 hours.
Maximum Marks: 60
Pass Marks 35% of the subjects, theory and practical separately.
Candidates are required to attempt two questions each from the section A and B of the
paper and the entire section C.
SECTION-A
Physiological techniques and pollination in relation to seed production:
1. Determination of major seed constituents such as carbohydrates, lipids and proteins.
Amylase activity in dormant and germinating seed. Membrane permeability, lipid
peroxidation and respiration involved during seed deterioration, vigour test methods
(ISTA)
2. Ecology and dynamics of pollination, management of pollination and breeder seed
production in self and cross pollinated crops. Hybrid Seed production of sunflower,
sorghum and rice using male sterility systems.
Seed production and certification of kharif and rabi crops:
3. Production and certification of different classes of seed of important kharif and rabi crops
with special emphasis on land requirement, field inspection, harvesting, threshing,
sealing, bagging and issue of certificate.
4. a) Kharif cereals: rice, maize; pearl millet; pulses: pigeonpea, mungbean; oil seeds:
groundnut, soybean; fibre crops: cotton and forage crops: sorghum, cowpea.
b) Rabi- cereals: wheat, barley; pulses: chickpea, lentil, peas; oil seeds: mustard,
sunflower, linseed; forage crops: barseem, oat.
SECTION-B
Seed production of pasture, forage grasses & legumes:
5. Varietal identification, maintance of genetic purity, section of seed production
area, influence of season, preparation, seed weight and seed rate.
6. Reproduction in forage grasses, legumes pollination and seed shattering, stage of
harvesting and processing. Seed treatment, storage and certification.
Seed drying, cleaning and upgrading :
7. Methods of seed drying: sun drying, forced air drying; opration and management.
8. Principles of cleaning seeds, methods of cleaning seeds: pre-claening, basic seed
cleaning and upgrading the quality of cleaned seeds.
