SECTION-A
(Write the answers in 4-5 sentences only. Each question carries 4 marks)
Q. 1 Define seed technology as per Feistritzer 1975. Give the goals of seed technology.
Ans. Feistritzer (1975) defined seed technology as the methods through which the genetic and
physical characteristics of seeds could be improved.
Goals of Seed Technology :-
1. Rapid multiplication
2. Timely supply
3. Assured high quality of seeds
4. Reasonable price
(one mark for definition and correct goals maximum three marks )
Q. 2 Define Variety. Give the steps involved in the development of variety.
Ans. Variety :- Botanically a variety is a sub group of species identified by its growth, yield, plant
fruit, seed or other characters.
Steps involved in the development of a variety.
1. Development of new strains
2. Evaluation of performance
3. Identification of superior strains
4. Release and notification
(one mark for definition and correct Steps maximum three marks )
Q. 3 Define Seed Certification. Give the procedure involved in seed certification.
Seed certification is a legally sanctioned system for the quality control of seed during seed
multiplication and production.
Procedure for seed certification:-
1. Receipt and scrutiny of the application.
2. Verification of seed source, class and other requirements.
3. Field inspection should be conducted to see that fields are up to the prescribed field
standards.
4. Post harvest inspections, including processing and packing.
5. Seed sampling and testing to confirm that the seeds are up to the prescribed seed standards.
6. Grant of certificate, tagging and sealing.
(one mark for definition and correct steps maximum three marks )
Q. 4 Describe the production of certified seed of Red gram (Pigeon pea) varieties with
following points. a) Land requirement b) Isolation requirement c) Rouging d) No. of
Ans. filed inspection.
a) Land Requirements :-Land to be used for seed production of pigeon pea shall be free of
volunteer plants. In addition the soil should be light, well drained and with a neutral ph.
b) Isolation requirements :- For maintaining variety purity an isolation of 100 mts. for
certified seed class is necessary from fields of other varieties and of the same variety
not confirming to varietal purity requirements of certification.
c) Rouging :- Rouge the off type plants and diseased plants affected by wilt, leaf spot and
stem canker, yellow mosaic virus and sterility virus from seed field from time to time,
as required.
d) Number of field inspections :- A minimum two and maximum four field inspections are
standardized for certification of different seed production programmes.
(one mark for each point with maximum four marks )
Q. 5 Define seed treatment. Give the benefits of seed treatments.
Ans. Seed treatment refers to the application of fungicide, insecticide or both to the seeds to
disinfect (deep seated) and disinfest (over seed coat) them from seed borne or soil borne
pathogenic organisms and storage insects.
Benefits of seed treatment:
1. Prevention of spread of plant diseases both systemic and non-systemic.
2. Seed treatment protects seed from seed rot and seedling blights.
3. Improves germination
4. Provides protection from storage insects and pests.
(one mark for definition and each point maximum three marks )
