INTRODUCTION

These tests were developed in the UK by Glanville ( 1947 ) and it is measure the degree of
compaction . For the standard amount of work and thus offer a direct and reasonably reliable
assessment of the workability Of concrete . the test require measurement of the weight of the
partially and fully compacted concrete and the ratio the partially compacted weight to the fully
compacted weight, which is always less than one, is known as compacted factor.

OBJECTIVE

To determine the degree of difference between half compress concreteand fully compressed
concrete density.

To determine the workability by compacting factor test.

THEORY

Workability:

This is defined as the ease with which concrete can be compactedfully withoutSegregating and
bleeding. It can also be defined as the amount of internal workrequired to fully compact the
concrete to optimum density. The workabilitydepends upon the quantity of water, grading,
shape and the percentage of theaggregates present in the concrete. To test the workably of
freshly concrete, compaction factor test is carried out. This test works on the principal of
determining the degree of compactionachieved by standard amount of work done by allowing
the concrete to fallthrough a standard height. The degree of compaction factor is the ratio of
weightpartially compacted concrete to the weight of fully compacted concrete.
APPARATUS

1. Two conical hoppers and cylinder

2. Weighing machine
3. Steel rod
4. Scoop

PROCEDURE

1. Clean thoroughly inner surface of hoppers to reduce friction.

2. Each hopper has hinged door (trap door) at the bottom .make sure that this
door is close before commencing the test.
3. Fill up the upper hopper with concrete to the brim
4. Release the door to let thr concrte falls into the lower hopper
5. Release the door of the second hopper to let the concrete falls intothe
cylinder
6. Cut of excess concrete from the top of the cylinder by sliding it withtwo
floats
7. Determine the net weight of the concrete .this weight is known asweight of
partially compacted concrete.(Ws)
8. Empty the cylinder and refill it with the concrete from the samesample in
three layers.tamp each layer 25 times with the standardsteel rod.
9. Level off the top surface of the cylinder and weight it to the nearest10
mg.this weight is known as weight fully compactedconcrete(WP)
10.Calculate the compacting factor of concrete :
Weight of the partially compacted concrete
Weight of fully compacted concrete

CONCLUSION

The sensitivity of the compaction factor is reduced outside the normalrange of

workability and is generally unsatisfactory for compacting factor greater than 0.92.
