To Measure the Focal Length of a Concave Mirror

Diagram

Apparatus
• Ray box + cross-threads • Metre stick
• Concave mirror
• Screen

Procedure
1. Measure the approximate focal length of the mirror by focusing a distance object onto a screen and measuring
the distance from the mirror to the screen.
2. Set the distance between the cross-threads and the mirror to a measured value (object distance) greater than the
approximate focal length and aim the mirror at the screen.
3. Move the screen back and forth until the image of the cross-threads is in sharp focus.
4. Measure the distance between the screen and mirror (image distance).
5. Repeat the experiment for a variety of object distances, ensuring it is always greater than the approximate focal
length.

Results
Controlled Variables
• Focal length of concave mirror.
• Approximate focal length = 20 cm.

Conclusions
• The focal length of the mirror was measured to be 17.9 cm from the graph and from calculations using the
spherical mirror formula.

Comments

Precautions
• Find the approximate focal length of the mirror before making measurements to ensure that only real images are
formed.
• Measure distances from the back of the mirror.

Sources of Error
• Determining the exact position when the image is in sharpest focus is difficult.
• Parallax error associated with measuring the object and image distances using the metre stick.

Improvements
• Perform the experiment using different objects.
• Perform the experiment with an LED array instead of a ray box and cross-thread combination.
