Module 1 Review
1. What is the total charge present in a circuit that carries a current of 30mA for a time of 600ms?
[Q = 1.8 x 10-2C or 18mC]
2.
3. A wire of length 30cm and diameter 2mm is carrying a current of 0.5A. If electrons drift in the
wire at a velocity of 1.0cms-1 calculate the number of electrons per unit volume in the
conductor. [ n = 9.95 x 1025m-3]
4. For the circuit shown below, calculate:
i) The currents I1 , I2 and I3 [ I1 = 0.63A; I2 = -0.1A; I3 = 0.53A]
ii) The potential difference between points b and e [ 5.59V]
iii) The terminal pd of batteries B and C. [B = 3.47V; C = 4.9V]
5. Two charges of the order of nanocoulombs ( Q = 1nC) are placed 6cm apart as shown below,
6cm
Calculate:
i) The net electric field strength at the midpoint of the charges. [ E = 30,000N/C to the right]
ii) The net electric potential at the midpoint of the charges. [ V = -300V]
6. The figure below shows two wires carrying currents of 5A and 10A in the same direction
separated by a distance of 20cm.
i) Sketch the magnetic field pattern for the current flowing in the direction shown and state
what type of force (whether attractive or repulsive) is present between the wires. [ F is
attractive]
ii) Mark with an X on the diagram the point (approximation) where the magnetic field due to
both wires is zero. [ closer to the 5A wire]
iii) Calculate the distance of X from the wire carrying the current of 5A. [X = 6.7cm]
7. A circular loop of wire with a resistance of 0.5Ω and radius 30cm is placed in an external
magnetic field of strength 0.2T directed out of the page. The magnetic field is turned off in 0.2s.
a) Calculate:
i) The original flux in the loop [0.057Wb]
ii) The induced emf [ ε = 0.285V]
iii) The current induced in the wire [I = 0.57A]
b) What is the direction of the induced current? [ counter-clockwise or anticlockwise]
8. An electron is moving at 107ms-1 at 90° to a magnetic field. The electron follows a circular path
of radius 5×10-6m. Calculate the magnitude of the flux density. [ 11.4T]
[m e = 9.11 x 10 31 kg, e = 1.60 x 10 19 C]
(a) Calculate the maximum emf induced in the coil. What is the position of the coil (relative to the
flux lines) when the induced emf has its maximum value ? [ε = 7.07V]
(b) Sketch a graph to represent how the induced emf varies with time.
(c) What is the magnitude of the induced emf at a time 5 × 10-3 s after it has passed through its
maximum value. [ε = 0V]
d) Calculate the magnitude of the induced emf at a time 2.5 × 10-3 s after it has passed through
its maximum value. [ ε = 4.9V]
{For the above question, remember whenever π falls inside of a trig function then you
must put your calculator in radian mode. You may also write it as 1800 instead of π and
leave your calculator in degree mode and you should get the same answer}
