Mini Project Guideline 2018
2. PROJECT DESCRIPTION
2.1 The main objective of this mini project is to DESIGN THE REACTOR SYSTEM for the
production of the chemicals as assigned to each group.
2.2 The types of reactor to be designed to produce the required product will be assigned
accordingly. The design outcome must be applicable for industrial utilizations while taking into
considerations of the issues related to it.
2.3 The project requires an initial literature review on process background and the recent production
technologies.
2.4 It is utmost important to research for the reaction kinetics since the work will focus on the design
of the reactor based on this kinetics.
2.5 The design is for an ISOTHERMAL REACTOR.
2.6 The production rate of the PRODUCT is determined as assigned to each group.
2.7 The reactor analysis and sizing calculations can be executed using MICROSOFT EXCEL or any
software deemed suitable.

4. PROJECT GRADING
The marks for each stage will be assigned as following. Each student in the group must assign
themselves as Student 1, 2, 3 or 4 and this cannot be changed throughout the project.
Mini Project submission is divided into 3 stages through out the 15 weeks. Students must submit
based on these stages according to the dateline given below. Failure to submit any of the stages
ON TIME resulted in no marks awarded for that stage.

MINI PROJECT JAN 2018 REACTION ENGINEERING (CKB 20104)
STAGE 1
PROCESS BACKGROUND (WEEK 1 – WEEK 6)
PART 1 (STUDENT 1)
1. Discuss and give brief review of the common production process (2 DIFFERENT PROCESSES).
2. Discuss advantages and disadvantages for both processes.
3. Proposed improvements on the process based on the disadvantages listed above.
4. Attach the PFD (process flow diagram).
PART 2 (STUDENT 2)
1. Background study on ALL the input materials used in the reaction (physical and chemical properties,
etc.)
2. Background study on the product and by-product (physical and chemical properties, etc.)
3. Cut and paste physical and chemical properties from Wikipedia is NOT ALLOWED.
PART 3 (STUDENT 3)
1. Give brief review on the chemistry of the selected reaction in the REACTOR.
2. State the complete stoichiometry equation. The equation must be balanced based on stoichiometry.
The reaction selected must occur in a reactor. Choose only 1 reaction and the reaction output must be
the end product as determined in the title.
3. State the typical process conditions necessary for the reactor. It MUST be based on literature.
• Reaction temperature
• Reaction Pressure
• Reactor Inlet and Outlet compositions
• Reactor conversion
PART 4 (STUDENT 4)
1. Background study on the assigned reactor.
2. A detailed analysis on the application of the reactors in industries.
FORMAT/OVERALL
1. Include the provided cover page
2. Complete table of contents
3. Overall formatting of the report

STAGE 2
MASS BALANCE, STOCHIOMETRIC TABLE, REACTION KINETICS & REACTOR DESIGN AND SIZING
TOTAL
5. Numbers must be presented in quantities of mass/time (for flow system) OR mass for Batch.
6. Based on the given production rate, determine the change of each species mass flow rate/mass if the
production rate is increased from 0 to 100%. Plot a Figure that charted the changes for each species
mass flowrate/mass versus production rate increment (0, 20, 40, 60, 80, and 100%).
7. Detailed methods of calculations must be shown in the appendix.
5
MINI PROJECT JAN 2018 REACTION ENGINEERING (CKB 20104)
• Order of the reaction with respect to each of the reactant and subsequently the overall order of
reaction based on LITERATURE REVIEW.
• Rate constant, k according to the stated rate law based on LITERATURE REVIEW. The
operating conditions (temperature) of which the k is obtained must be stated clearly.
4. Finally, state the complete rate law based on Literature and CALCULATE the rate of reaction.
5. Subsequently, analyze and discuss the effect of changing operating conditions (temperature,
pressure, and conversion) towards the rate of reaction for each of the conditions below.
• Change of temperature (increase and decrease of 10 °C from the assigned operating
condition)
• Change of pressure (increase and decrease of 2 MPa from the assigned operating condition)
• Change of conversion (increase and decrease of 20% from the assigned operating condition)
