Tun PSV Sizing

This document provides information on pressure level relations for pressure relief valves (PRVs) including: - Maximum allowable accumulated pressures for single and multiple valve installations under fire and non-fire exposure conditions ranging from 100-121% of maximum allowable working pressure. - Typical characteristics of PRVs including maximum relieving pressures for fire sizing, multiple valves, and supplemental valves ranging from 98-121% of maximum allowable working pressure. - Common set pressures for PRVs including maximum allowable, additional valves, and single valves ranging from 90-110% of maximum allowable working pressure.

Note:
1) All values are % of MAWP. The max. accumulated pressure equals to the PSV relieving pressure.
2) Max. up to 106% of MAWP (as per ASME PG-67.2). However, normally safety valves shall be designed
to attain full lift at a pressure not greater than 3% above their set pressure (as per ASME PG-72)
3) Each boiler shall have at least one safety valve/safety relief valve and if it has more than 500 ft 2
(47 m2) of bare tube water heating surface, or if an electric boiler has a power input more than
1100 kW, it shall have two or more safety valves/ safety relief valves. For a boiler with combined
bare tube and extended water-heating surface exceeding 500 ft 2 (47 m2), two or more safety valves/
safety relief valves are required only if the design steam generating capacity of the boiler exceeds
4000 lb/hr (1800 kg/hr).

PSV SIZING CALCULATION - EXCHANGER TUBE RUPTURE - API 520
Project Proj. No. Revision By
Equipment Calcul. No.
PSV Tag P&ID No.

PROCESS NOTES
Tube rupture is considered to be a valid case where the design pressure of the high pressure side of a heat exchanger exceeds
pressure on the low pressure side. The section of ASME VIII governing test pressures was modified in 1999. Prior to 1999 the '
applied where tube rupture was only considered if the low pressure side design pressure was less than two thirds of the high p
pressure. This changed to the '10/13' rule of thumb with the 1999 revision of the code.
