Iodine Value Determination Porim Test Method
IODINE VALUE
Method : Manual Titration
1
1.0 PURPOSE
To check iodine value of test materials using manual titration
2.0 RESPONSIBILITY
2.1 Chemist is responsible to ensure the personnel are appropriately trained.
2.2 QC personnel is responsible to perform iodine value determination and generate test
report when is required.
2.3 Manager is responsible to review reports / verification report generated by QC personnel.
5.1 Wear and use appropriate Personnel Protective Equipment when handle test materials
5.2 Solutions very hazardous in case of skin contact (corrosive, irritator) of eye contact
(corrosive), of ingestion, of inhalation (fatal), may cause damage to organs through
prolonged and repeated exposure.
7.0 PROCEDURES
7.1 Weight ~0.2-0.5 g of sample and put into a 250 mL flask.
7.2 Add 20 mL cyclohexane to dissolve the sample. Warm the flask slightly if necessary.
7.3 Add 25 mL Wijs solution, insert a stopper, shake gently and placed in the dark for 1 hour.
7.4 Add 20 mL of 100 g L-1 potassium iodide (Weigh 5 g KI, dissolve in to 50 mL water) and
100 mL distilled water.
7.5 Titrate with sodium thiosulphate solution until yellow iodine colour almost disappeared.
7.6 Add 1-2 mL starch indicator, shake vigorously until blue colour disappear. Repeat the
same for blank with no sample added.
Iodine value = [12.69N(V2 –V1)]/W
N = normality of sodium thiosulphate (Na2S2O3)
V2 = volume of Na2S2O3 solution used for blank
V1 = volume of Na2S2O3 solution used for sample
W = weight of sample in gram (g)
8.2 In case of skin contact, remove/take off immediately all contaminated clothing
and rinse skin with water/shower. In case of eye contact, remove contact lenses (if
present) and rinse cautiously with water for several minutes.
