RESEARCH & TEACHING FOCUS

My primary research focus is the relationship of adaptive performance of Shakespeare’s plays in
the border regions of the United States and Mexico. My research traces the limitations of the
adaptation and appropriation of Shakespeare and what this means in terms of the cultural history
of the Southwestern United States in terms of interaction with Shakespeare’s universality in the
midst of negotiating identity as a means of response to their environment. This line of research
has afforded me the opportunity to reflect on how this historical material might influence a
broader understanding of identity construction and influence in divergent cultural contexts. As
well, I have a strong interest in the social history of border populations and cross cultural contact.
