1. The oxygen tank contains 19.08kg of oxygen at a pressure of 597kPa and temperature of 28°C. 2. The pressure gauge would read 972.61kPa for the rigid air tank containing 5kg of air at 25°C in a 400L volume. 3. When the two tanks are connected and reach thermal equilibrium at 20°C, the total volume is 3.21m3 and the equilibrium pressure is 284.12kPa.

1. The pressure gage on a 2.5m^3 oxygen tank reads 500kPa.

Determine the amount of oxygen

in the tank if the temperature is 28 C and the atmospheric pressure is 97 kPa.

GIVEN:

Pgage =
500 kPa

Patm = 97
kPa

T = 28 C

V = 2.5
m^3

Roxygen =
0.2598
REQUIRED:
kJ/kg.K
m = mass of oxygen = ?

SOLUTION:

 Pabs = Patm + Pgage

Pabs = 97 kPa + 500 kPa
Pabs = 597 kPa

 pV = mRT
m =pV/RT
m = 597 kPa(2.5 m^3)/(0.2598 kJ/kg.K)(28+273.15K)
m = 19.08 kg
2. A 400L rigid tank contains 5kg of air at 25 C. Determine the reading on the pressure gage if
the atmospheric pressure is 97kPa.

GIVEN:

V = 400L

T = 25 C

m = 5kg

Patm = 97kPa

R = 0.287 kPa.m^3/kg.K

REQUIRED:

Pgage = ?

SOLUTION:

 P = mRT/V
P = (5kg)( 0.287 kPa.m^3/kg.K)(25+273.15K)/(400L)(1m^3/1000L)
P = 1069.61kPa

 Pgage = Pabs – Patm

Pgage = 1069.61kPa – 97kPa
Pgage = 972.61kPa
3. A 1m^3 tank containing air at 25 C and 500kPa is connected through a valve to another tank
containing 5kg of air at 35 C and 200kPa. Now the valve is opened, and the entire system is
allowed to reach thermal equilibrium with the surroundings, which are at 20 C. Determine the
volume of the second tank and the final equilibrium pressure of air.

GIVEN:

V1 = 1m^3; T1
= 25 C; P1 =
500kPa

m2 = 5kg; T2
= 35 C; P2 =
200kPa

Tsurr = 20 C
REQUIRED:
Rair = 0.287
kJ/kmol.K
V2 = volume of tank 2 = ?

Pt = final equilibrium pressure = ?

SOLUTION:

 m1 = P1V1/RT1
m1 = (500kPa)( 1m^3)/( 0.287 kJ/kmol.K)(298.15K)
m1 = 5.84kg

 V2 = m2RT2/P2
V2 = (5kg)( 0.287 kJ/kmol.K)(308.15K)/ 200kPa
V2 = 2.21m^3

 Vt = V1 + V2
Vt = 1m^3 + 2.21m^3
Vt = 3.21m^3

 mt = m1 + m2
mt = 5.84kg + 5kg
mt = 10.84kg

 Pt = mtRTsurr/Vt
Pt = (10.84kg)( 0.287 kJ/kmol.K)(293.15K)/ 3.21m^3
Pt = 284.12kPa
4. The pressure in an automobile tire depends on the temperature of the air in the tire. When the
air temperature is 25 C, the pressure gage reads 210kPa. If the volume of the tire is
0.025m^3, determine the pressure rise in the tire when the air temperature in the tire rises to
50 C. Also, determine the amount of air that must be bled off to restore pressure to its original
value at this temperature. Assume the atmospheric pressure is 100kPa.
GIVEN:

T1 = 25 C; Pgage = 210kPa

T2 = 50 C

V = 0.025m^3

Patm = 100kPa

Rair = 0.287 kJ/kmol.K

REQUIRED:

Pt = final pressure

mt = mass total of air

SOLUTION:

 P1 = Pgage + Patm
P1 = 210kPa + 100kPa
P1 = 310kPa

 P1/T1 = P2/T2
P2 = P1(T2)/T1
P2 = 310kPa(323.15K)/298.15K
P2 = 336kPa

 Pt = P2 – P1
Pt = 336kPa – 310kPa
Pt = 26kPa

 m1 = P1V/RT

m1 = 310kPa(0.025m^3)/(0.287 kJ/kmol.K)(323.15K)

m1 = 0.0836kg

 m2 = P2V/RT
m2 = 336kPa(0.025m^3)/( 0.287 kJ/kmol.K)(323.15K)
m2 = 0.0906kg

 mt = m2 – m1
mt = 0.0906kg - 0.0836kg
mt = 0.007 kg
