COURSE OBJECTIVE:

Portuguese 230 is the third course in a four-course sequence (110, 120, 230, 240) that leads to the fulfillment of the foreign
language requirement. Developing communicative abilities in Portuguese and understanding the rich culture of the
Portuguese-speaking world are the two primary objectives of the course. Consequently, the program combines content-
based language instruction with an interactive task-based approach. This means that the material will be presented to you
thematically and that the activities used to reinforce your language development will focus on real-life language situations.
You will be expected to actively participate in a variety of interactive small and large-group activities. This course is not
based on lectures, but rather on active learner participation in different tasks that require students to use Portuguese in
various situations that reflect normal use of different varieties of Portuguese. The class will be conducted in Portuguese in
order to provide you with maximum exposure to the language.

COURSE REQUIREMENTS:

• Learning a language is hard work! It requires conscientious study habits, dedication and perseverance. The best way
approach to this course is to familiarize oneself with the material to be covered prior to each class. Plan to spend at least
one hour studying, reviewing and practicing exercises for every hour of class time, each week (not just prior to quizzes and
exams). This estimate is above and beyond workbook assignments. Remember that some workbook assignments will be
longer than others.

• Students will be expected to actively participate in partner work and small group activities. This course is not based on
lectures. Instead, learners will master the structure through their participation in situational tasks that require use of
conversational Portuguese.

• If you are having problems with the course material, you should inform the instructor as soon as possible. Do

1
not wait for problems to accumulate. For problems with Pearson materials and MPL, contact Frank Steed

GRADING COMPONENTS:

Assessment and testing procedures will be representative of the type of language instruction offered through classroom
activities. Students will be evaluated based on your achievement of the course objective according to the following course
components:

Components: Percentage
Tests (4) 24%
Compositions (2) 20%
Oral exams (2) 15%
Homework/assignments 16%
Cultural project 15%
Participation 10%

• Test (Teste): After each chapter, there will be a test covering the content of that chapter. There will be 4
tests in total. There are no finals for this course.

• Composition (Redação) *see attached grading criteria: Composition topics will be provided beforehand by instructor.
Each assignment will consist of a first and a corrected final draft for a total of 50 points. Students must do a word count
and a Portuguese spell check for all two drafts of their compositions (this feature is available in word processing programs
at every computer lab on campus). Email submissions are only admissible if prior arrangements have been made with
the instructor. All assignments must reflect the student’s own work in order to assess current level, progress and areas
of difficulty. This means that compositions should never be edited or reviewed by native speakers / other students
before submitting them to the instructor.

• Oral Exam (Exame Oral) *see attached grading criteria: To evaluate your ability to express yourself and interact with
others in Portuguese, there will be 2 oral exams reflecting topics that are covered in the chapters under study.
Preparation for these exams can best be accomplished through daily active participation in the classroom. Students will
be placed in groups of two, and a specific time will be schedule for each group. The topics for the oral exams will be
provided by your instructor.

• Cultural project (Projeto cultural): For this class, you will prepare a presentation about a cultural topic related to
one of the Portuguese-speaking countries you studied during the semester. The project will be developed in groups of
three or four students. Topics will be discussed with your instructor later in the semester. You will be expected to use
props, visual aids (charts, pictures, PowerPoint presentations…), etc. Feel free to be as creative as you wish to present
the material to your classmates. Presentations are not to be read although you may refer to note cards written in English.
Attendance on cultural presentation days is mandatory. Absences on one of these days will lower your grade significantly.

• Homework (Tarefa/trabalho de casa): Your instructor will assign homework from the workbook, textbook, or other
sources. You must turn in all assigned homework on the due date provided by your instructor. Your instructor may also
assign other kinds of homework and/or decide to give quizzes. Further information about these assignments will be
provided by your instructor.

• Participation (Participação) (see attached grading criteria): Participation involves a number of variables, including
the following: use of Portuguese in the classroom, participation in all class activities, cooperation during group and pair-
work, and respect and attitude toward the instructor and peers. You will complete the participation form twice during
the semester, as indicated on the syllabus. Please note: your instructor reserves the right to raise or lower your self-
assessed participation grade if he/she feels that it does not adequately reflect your level of participation.

GENERAL POLICIES

• Attendance: Due to the nature of language learning in general, attendance to class is mandatory. It is understood that
on occasion, an extenuating circumstance (such as an illness) may prevent attendance. Students will be allowed a total
of three unexcused absences during the semester. These days cover illness, weddings, funerals, job interviews, etc.
Starting with the fourth unexcused absence, regardless of the reasons for the first three, 1 percentage
point will be subtracted from the final calculated course grade for every absence. Late arrivals and early
departures (of 15 minutes or greater) from class will also count as absences. Be prompt! The instructor will take
attendance in the beginning of class. Students who arrive late need to speak with the instructor after the class period

2
is over to get their presence. There will be no exceptions to this policy unless the student provides documentation
explaining circumstances for missing classes. Official documented excuses are verifiable: doctor’s notes and/or bills;
hospital bills, religious holidays (with prior notification), and university sponsored and official athletic excuses. A note
that does not meet the above stated requirements is not an official excuse. The instructor reserves the right to verify
any excuse, particularly in instances of excessive absence. The make-up of any non-exam materials (homework, essays,
etc.) will be accepted only with an official excuse and in a timely manner, according to the instructor’s discretion.
Students cannot make-up quizzes or exams without an official excuse. It is always acceptable to turn in work early if
you know that you will be absent on a particular day.

• Academic Integrity: Plagiarism, including the use of on-line translators, cheating, submitting work of another person
or work previously used without informing the instructor, tampering with the academic work of others and other forms
of academic dishonesty will lead to lowered course grades, failure of the course or more severe measures, depending
on the gravity of the individual case.

 Extra Credit: No extra credit will be given under any circumstances.
