3 Preparations for Connection

Splitter
The external splitter can efficiently reduce the signal disturbance on the telephone line.
When voice and data are transmitted on the same telephone line at the same time, you
need to use the external splitter to separate the voice and data signals:
z LINE: Connecting to the phone jack on the wall.
z PHONE: Connecting to the telephone.
z MODEM: Connecting to the ADSL interface of the HG520s.

Network Adapter
You need to connect the Ethernet interface of the HG520s with the Ethernet interface of
your computer. Make sure that the network adapter is installed in your computer and
the TCP/IP service is enabled in your operating system.

5
Please use a cross-over cable to connect the HG520s with a switch. Ensure
that the Ethernet cable in the packing box is a straight-through cable.

5 Configuring the HG520s
You can get online by using the embedded PPP dial-up software of the HG520s or by
using the embedded PPP dial-up software of your computer, after you configure the
HG520s and your computer. The configuration is as follows.

Please use the parameters provided by your internet service provider (ISP) for
configuration. If the configuration is wrong, you will not be able to access the
Internet.

Using the Embedded PPP Dial-Up Software to Get

Online
Step 1 Configure the HG520s to enable the embedded dial-up function
1. Connect the HG520s with your computer by using the Ethernet cable.
2. Configure the IP address of your computer to be in the same network
segment as the HG520s. The default LAN IP address and subnet mask of
the HG520s is 192.168.1.1 and 255.255.255.0.
3. Start Internet Explorer on your computer and enter the Web address of the
HG520s in the address bar. The default address is http://192.168.1.1.
4. Enter the username and password in the displayed window.
5. Select Basic > WAN Settings from the navigation tree to display the
configuration page.
6. Set Mode to Routing.
7. Set Encapsulation to PPPoE and configure the other parameters. Then
click Submit.
Step 2 Configure your computer
Configure your network card (also called as network adapter) to make the computer to
automatically obtain information, such as the IP address, the gateway, and DNS.

If the embedded dial-up function of the HG520s is enabled, you need to

power off the HG520s when you do not want to access the Internet.
Otherwise, the ISP may calculate the fee for accessing the Internet even if you
have powered off your computer.

7
Using the PPP Dial-Up Software of the Computer to Get
Online
Step 1 Configure the HG520s to work in the bridge mode
Refer to steps for enabling the embedded dial-up function to configure the bridge mode.
Select the Bridge mode.
Step 2 Configure your computer
The PPP dial-up software is installed in your computer, and then you can get online.
The Windows XP (Professional) operating system has an embedded PPPoE dial-up
software. To set up the dial-up connection in Windows XP system, do as follows:
1. Select Start > All Programs > Accessories > Communications > Network
Connections.
2. Click Create a new connection in the displayed page.
3. Click Next in the New Connection Wizard dialog box.
4. Select Connect to the Internet and click Next.
5. Select Set up my connection manually and click Next.
6. Select Connect using a broadband connection that requires a username
and password and click Next.
7. Enter the name of the dial-up connection (you can enter the name as you
like). Then click Next.
8. Select Anyone's use or My use only and click Next.
9. Enter the username and the password. Then click Next.
10. Click Finish.

6 Configuring the Wireless Mode

In the wireless mode, the HG520s enables you to access the Internet without connecting
a cable.

8 FAQs
1. Why does the ADSL connection break so often?

Many possible factors may cause this problem, such as faults in your ISP's access server,
line disconnection, and line disturbance. You can check as follows:
1. Make sure that the ADSL line is connected properly.
2. Keep the HG520s away from appliances with strong electric fields or
magnetic fields, such as a microwave oven and a refrigerator.
3. Make sure that no telephone or fax machine is connected directly to the
ADSL line.
4. Replace the old ISA network adapter with a new 10/100M PCI network
adapter and install the latest driver.
5. Find help on http://www.huawei.com.
6. Contact your ISP for help.

11
2. Will the call service and the ADSL access service influence each other?

The HG520s separates the voice from the data signals by the FDM technique. Though
being transmitted through the same telephone line, voice and data traffic do not
interfere with each other and neither of the two services will be influenced.

3. How to restore the default factory settings?

If you cannot get online, for you changed the working parameters of the HG520s, try to
restore the default settings of the HG520s as follows.
1. Find the RESET Button on the rear panel of the HG520s.
2. Use a pin to press the RESET button, and then release it after 3 seconds.
