    SHE Alert No 082

    Drawn to Danger

    A colleague received a deep cut injury to his neck and side of the head whilst using
    a 7” grinder to dress steel plate. As he positioned himself to carry out his task,
    the draw strings from his Jacket Hood became entangled in the rotating spindle of
    the grinder; this resulted in the grinder being drawn towards his head and neck. It
    happened so quickly that he had no to think or react to protect himself.
    Potentially this incident could have been catastrophic to both our colleague and his
    family.

    Key Points to Remember:


    1. Always ensure that a risk assessment has been conducted for all work, identifying all
    possible hazards including potential entanglement. Remember ”What if?” thinking
    safety will keep you safe. Don’t forget PPE
    2. Clothing can present entanglement hazards whilst working with rotating equipment such
    as drills and grinders.
    3. Keep all potential entanglement sources secure at all times or remove from danger
    zone. Eg - draw string for hoods, cuffs, hi vis vests, loose clothing, lanyards and belts
    etc
    4. Remember our guiding principle is that everyone has the right to challenge any unsafe
    working practices, conditions or behaviours
