Coding Application Review: Scratch

Scratch

I personally found Scratch to be an enjoyable well-put-together application. I personally liked the free
range of different activities I could create. I had the opportunity create scenes, games, or mini cartoons.
Coming from someone who doesn’t usually enjoy technology based games, Scratch is a game changer.

Scratch is designed for children, this freeware multimedia programming tool makes creating animated
stories, video games and interactive artwork a snap. Scratch uses a simple graphical interface that lets
users put together multimedia programs without any programming knowledge. The controls are intuitive
enough for kids to begin with simple maneuvers while complex enough to build elaborate games and
scripts that make use of various effects to share with family and other Scratch users.

Ease of Use

Overall, the website was easy to navigate and find where all the different tools were located. During my
creation process, I definitely struggled at times. Coming from someone who is not overly tech savvy at all
nor enjoys technology based games, having a tutorial video was crucial for me. The video showed me step
by step how to make my “sprite” move, how to add a background, how to incorporate sound and dialogue,
and so much more. Instead of having one general tutorial video on how to use the application, it included
several tutorial videos that covered all the specific actions you need to know to create a desired outcome.

Although I appreciated the different tutorial videos, because there were so many, I found it overwhelming
and defeating. Trying to figure out what I was doing and at the same time trying to find the one video that
would help me figure it out was too much.

Lastly, I appreciated how in the application there were no pop-up adds or annoying glitches that prevented
me from enjoying the website.

Help Features

As I mentioned earlier, Scratch includes several tutorial videos to help you step by step on how to code
your desired actions. I feel as it would’ve been nice to have help while doing your work, instead of having
to leave what you are doing to go find a video for help.

Applicability to Teacher Task

Students can use Scratch to code their own interactive stories, animations, and games. In the process, they
learn to think creatively, reason systematically, and work collaboratively (essential skills for everyone in
today’s society). Educators are integrating Scratch across many different subject areas and age groups.

As an aspiring teacher, I appreciated how the Educators Guide shows and explains all the different ways
to implement Scratch within the classroom.

(Scratch allows individual work, but also collaborative)

Lesson Compatibility

As mentioned above, Scratch is being used across several different subjects and age groups. For instance,
Scratch can be used in a math lesson by either having yourself or your students create and play a math
based game; it can be used in a language arts lesson where you have your student write a story and bring
it to life through Scratch; or you can create a music lesson through scratch or have your students create
their own music. The possibilities are endless.

Hardware Compatibility

Scratch will run in most current web browsers on desktops, laptops and tablets. You can view projects on
mobile phones, but currently you are not able to create or edit projects on phones.

Cost

Scratch is a free application with many updated versions to enhance your experience and lessons. The
only concern is that I couldn’t find if the updated versions cost money or not.

Overall Review Including Strengths and Weaknesses

Overall, I believe Scratch is an excellent tool to implicate in future teaching. I highly appreciate the
organization and helpful information their website provided. The only weakness is within myself in
learning how to use a new website, especially when it has to do with coding. Therefore, once I become a
master at this website I will definitely use it within my future classroom.
