INTRODUCTION

Team PUSO (People for Unique Service to Others) in partnership with Gawad
Kalinga has flawlessly accomplished Project Turo—a program which aims to
provide practical knowledge and skills among the youths to strengthen their
personality; develop self-confidence by empowering their communication skills
and providing opportunities to explore their talents; and make them aware of the
happenings in their environment. Classroom sessions are conducted every
Sunday, from July to September, in Gawad Kalinga-Hiyas ng Maynila, San Andres
Bukid, Manila.

The program is in the form of mini-symposium, designed to have

collaborative discussion with planned activities appropriate to reinforce the
following topics: a) proper ways to introduce one’s self; b) ways on how to
develop ones personality; c) developing self-confidence by empowering
communication skills and taking pride of one’s talent; d) environmental
awareness and; e) disaster preparedness.

This accomplishment will not be possible without Team PUSO’s dedication

and passion for teaching. They have created a realistic and strict action plan to
maximize everyone’s ability; thus, they are able to achieve each goal
successfully. With a core of basic points, they have efficiently managed to get all
essential information across their target learners.

One of the best practices done by Team PUSO is to keep students engaged
all the time. By creating a system in questions and answer/discussion sessions,
everyone knows they are “on-deck” in the batters circle, and may be the next one
“up to bat”. This definitely keeps students from tuning out while others engage.
But it does not mean they are forced to participate in class recitation against their
own will. Questions and answers sessions are done, primarily, to check if the
teacher and students are still on the “same page”. Thus, making way for easy
learning and preventing confusion to happen.

Finally, TEAM PUSO has made each student feel unique and needed. They
genuinely acknowledge and appreciate each student individually, for the qualities
which make them unique and wonderful human beings. They have also make
them feel like they have something to offer and contribute.

ADEQUATE AND RELEVANT PROJECTS/

ACTIVITIES TO ACHIEVE OBJECTIVES

Team Puso is committed to mold the youths to become effective,

productive, disciplined and responsible member of the modern society, and to
help them contribute for the development of the country.

It also aim to provide practical knowledge and skills among the youths
strength, their personality, develop self-confidence by empowering their
communication skills and providing opportunities to explore their talents, and
make them aware of the happenings in the environment.

With these objectives, the team were able to formulate with these topics:
Introduction and Polite Expression, Developing One’s Personality, Community
Skills, Developing Self-confidence, Developing One’s Talent, Aim to Succeed,
Environmental Awareness, and Disaster Preparedness.

Team Puso coordinated with some of the Gawad Kalinga members to

identify the needs of the children. They were able to give some of it and relate
the activities formulated to these needs.

The team also conducted surveys to the children’s parents for them to know
the additional needs of them.

Each activity corresponds on the objectives that they can relate to their
everyday lives. The team ensure that the activities are easy to understand and
that they will enjoy it.

During the first meeting, the team provided an activity entitled getting to
know each other. This activity will help the students to easily familiarize with their
classmates. They also make their own minions cupcake during their break time.

Second meeting is all about Developing One’s Personality. The children were
asked to draw what they want to be in the future. And after that they will going to
discuss it in front of the class.

Third meeting is about Communication skills where in the pupils will be able
to develop their self confidence in enhancing communication and interpersonal
skills. The learnings are very useful to excel in their academic performance or
even as an asset in dealing with other people.
Developing one’s talent help the students to develop their self-esteem by
enhancing their talents and artistic abilities. Most of the child’s talent is in
dancing. They really love to dance, they even want to perform during their
graduation.

Environmental Awareness will promote waste reduction, recycling and

create public awareness on the waste management. The pupils have a recall
about the segregation of waste and why they need to do such things. What are
the consequences if they did not do of follow this kind of actions. And also make
them realize the reality in their surroundings.

And the last activity is about Disaster Awareness and Preparedness. This
will make the children aware and prepared in the disaster they might experience
in their life. The pupils reviewed about what they will do before, during and after
the disaster. Reminded them the things that they needed to prepare.

All of this activities will surely help them in their everyday life that they will
not forget everything of what they have learn even it was a very short time.

Systematic and Effective procedures

(Teaching Methods, Curriculum Development, Testing etc.)

An effective teaching can be defined as activities that promote student learning.

It encompasses all of these instructor behaviors that foster student learning of
the instructor’s and or of the institution’s educational objectives.

To have an effective learning there must be a systematic way to do it. The

activities must be reliable enough to be understood and easily to do by the
students. The instructors and the teacher must understand each other.

To make it effective, the teacher must be ready in everything that she will
teach. This is the time he/she will going to make a lesson plan. A plan where in all
the activities she will be done is written. It is one example of systematic way of
teaching because there is a procedure to be followed. If the teacher followed
his/her lesson plan, there is an assurance that the class will have a smooth flow. If
something happen and the lesson is somewhat not suitable for the children, that
will be the time he/she can revised her lesson plan. She needs to think fast in
changing her activities.
A teacher must master what she will going to teach. This will help her to
easily teach what she will teach. A teacher who masters her lesson will make her
students listen to her attentively. This will make a good image for you. They will
make you their ideal teacher because you are good in what you do.

Good learning will not take place if there is no good curriculum

development process. This is systematically organizes what will be taught, who
will be taught, and how will it be taught. Each component affects and interacts
with other components. Methods of how content is taught are affective by who is
being taught, their characteristics and the setting.

Every time that the curriculum was changed or revised, before it was
implemented the teachers will have their trainings/ seminars in order for them to
be prepared about it. They are training on how to write the lesson plan and how
they will go to teach the new curriculum. They are also provided by new
curriculum guide, Teacher’s guide, and Learner’s Material which are aligning with
each other. Aside from it, teachers also trained on how they will compute the
grades of the pupils.

Testing is one way to get the progress of the child. It is an example of

assessing the child’s learning. The teacher can also determine if the child learn in
giving test. This will be his/her guide in determining their understanding about
the lesson. If the result is below the passing rate it means you need to re-teach or
review the topics that needed to be taught.

If the procedures were followed systematically there will be no problem in

gaining new knowledge and skills for both the teacher and the learners.

Participation of Faculty,
Staff, Students, Community
in Major projects and Activities
The MEM students of PUP Graduate School attended a meeting conducted
by PUP and Gawad Kalinga in San Andres Bukid, Manila.

Together with the Gawad Kalinga Officials and Staff headed by Brother Raul
Ramiterre of Gawad Kaliga, “Hiyas ng Maynila”, in San Andres Bukid, the Dean of
College of Education, and professor of MEM 644: Education in Community
Development, Dr. Milagrina A. Gomez appointed the gathering of both
organizations for the common good of the people.

For the start of the program, Dr. Gomez leaded the prayer for this blessed
day given to all participants for attending the meeting.

The meeting had started with opening remarks by the Dean of College of
Education, telling the participants about the partnership of the two organizations
since the start of the community extension program of PUP in Gawad Kalinga and
the reason for this social action for the community.

The head of Gawad Kalinga “Hiyas ng Maynila”, in San Andres Bukid,

Brother Raul Ramiterre had been introduced to the students of PUP for the
meeting. First of all, He thanked PAP for continuing support with Gawad Kalinga in
giving a helping hand in San Andres Bukid for its community development.

He started to tell about the story behind the actions of Gawad Kalinga in the
community and how it could reach out to the people. Now in San Andres Bukid,
he can say how these people needed a helping hand like Gawad Kalinga and also
with PUP Extension Program for the realization of its goal.

Gawad Kalinga had given assistance for the improvement of the quality of
life of the people. For this social action, the officials and the staff of the
organization experienced challenges and blessings in this movement. Even
Brother Raul Ramiterre had known miracles and blessings happened in the Gawad
Kalinga in different places that amazed us that the organization itself is being
blessed. That he had begun giving us inspirational messages and quotes that
make it this organization having a strong determination to help the community.

The plan had been talked about afterwards. Brother Raul Ramiterre
introduced to the MEM students among the Gawad Kalinga Staff in each extension
program of the organization. He had suggested many things about the plan for
those four extension programs for Gawad Kalinga like the age group of the
participants in the program, allotted time schedule for our community service,
and the practical knowledge and skills needed in their real-life situation.

Participation of the People in the Literacy Program

For the Literacy Group, the age bracket invited to join the program are the
SIBOL age group and the SAGIP age group. Our professor, and mentor in this
program, Dr. Gomez had requested the time allotted for each session is for
morning session in each Sunday class
considering that MEM students are
also teachers having their weekday
classes in their respective schools.

Participation of the Gawad Kalinga

The Gawad Kalinga Staff of the Literacy Program, Mrs. Anastacia Ercilla, or
we called her “Nanay Tasing” is very kind in providing the things we need during
each Sunday class and the classroom we had been staying for the whole morning
giving us a child-friendly environment to make every topic more convenient to us
to teach and for the learners to learn.

And also to the parents of the children who are so supportive in sending
their own son/daughter in the class.

That is how we can see the willingness of the people to make this program
a reality in achieving the objectives and goals of the program that will also leave
milestones in each activity we do and appreciate the hardwork and determination
of the children to learn and enjoy learning.
The children
