REPORT LAYOUT

Set your report out in the following way and USE headings.

Research Question “……………………………..?” SACE Number

Introduction
Approximately 250 words.
This is WHY you decided to do your research project. Tell the reader why you decided to investigate this topic and why
you have an interest in the research. You can use some of your proposal for this.

Research Processes
Approximately 250 words.
This is HOW the research was done. Describe the processes used for the primary research and explain why you decided
to use these processes- discuss the advantages and disadvantages of using these processes. Cite secondary sources
supporting your choice of primary research processes - eg. Jones (2001) states that action research is very effective in
gathering data from school students, or Smith (2014) suggests that online surveys ‘are the best way to anonymously
collect data from a wide range of community members’ p25.

Key Findings
Approximately 250 words.
This is WHAT you discovered in your primary research. Each finding should be listed separately, and this is where graphs
and tables could also be used (don’t forget to reference them). This section needs to list the facts that you discovered
and lead into the next section, which is a discussion of what this data means.

Discussion
Approximately 500 words (Research Project A) or 1000 words (Research Project B).
This section describes your research data and what these findings MEAN. This section draws conclusions and integrates
the primary data with secondary source material- eg My research found that …..and this was also supported by Smith
(2010) who also found that ….or Jones (2011) concluded that …..however in my research I found this not to be the case
….and this may have been due to ….
This section should be where you demonstrate ‘insight’ and show a ‘thorough’ examination of your findings and state
possible reasons for the results. It is MOST important to synthesize your findings with the secondary source material.
USE the PEAL structure to wrote your paragraphs

Conclusion
Approximately 250 words. This is where you summarise your findings and, once again address the research question. Do
not bring anything new into this section, merely re state your findings and demonstrate how these findings answer your
research question.
