Greaves "B" Series Right angle gear drives in single / double reduction are intended to satisfy
characteristic requirements and conditions encountered in cooling tower applications This
series covering model B-114 to B-132 (having ratio range of 1.22/1 to 4.57/1) in single stage and
B 214 to B 235 (having ratio range of 5.06/1 to 15.4/1 (in double stage are exclusively meant for
Cooling Tower installations with features like unicast case. 3-point foundation, pumpless
lubrication and combination of labyrinth double oil seal arrangement towards top end.
This catalogue contains specifications, dimensions and ratings for selection of standard gear
drives against usual applications. Our engineers will be pleased to assist in case of unusual
conditions attracting special requirements.
Salient Features
Spiral Bevel Gears : These are manufactured from high quality case-hardening alloy steel,
generated in klingelnberg cyclo-palloid system and lap finished in matching sets.
Helical Gears : These gears are machined from high quality alloy case-hardening steel, which
are individually flank ground to precision grade accuracy. Case hardened surface with softer
core provides improved wear resistance and fatique strength.
Case : Single piece grey cast iron casing is of rigid construction with necessary reinforcement.
Provided with easily accessible service ports they are suitably designed on CAD work stations to
absorb fan loads and to dampen noise and vibration. The three point foundation facilities in
achieving alignment.
For ABM SERIES : The gearbox housings are designed to ensure that critical dimensions
correspond to those of equivalent models.
Bearings : Taper roller bearings from major manufacturers are used throughout. These bearings
are of ample capacity to support combined thrust and radial loads.
Shafting : Input shaft intergral with bevel pinion is machined from case-hardening alloy steel.
Direct hardening steel is used in case of output shaft. The cylindrical seats for bearings, wheel,
seal, coupling, fan are finished by precision grinding. These are also designed to accommodate
external overhung loads and fan stresses, as appropriate. Specific requirement towards fan
fitment dimensions and input drive system must be addressed during placement of order.
For ABM SERIES : The shaft extensions and positions are maintained inline with the
dimensional configuration of equivalent drive.
Shaft Seals : The shaft extensions are filled with spring-loaded rubber seals to prevent outflow of
oil. The ingress of external contaminants is particularly arrested on fan end by employing double-
seals with a grease accumulation between them in addition, metallic labyrinth seal on output
extension takes care of the moist atmosphere containing micro bubbles of water particles.
Lubrication : Lubrication of gears and bearings is entirely self-contained by 'splash'. Oil slinger
on the input shaft produces positive splash which, in turn, ensures continuous circulation of oil to
top bearing through cast channels and baffles. Recommended oil should be Greaves
Traxol - G32.
Cooling : Standard gear units are cooled by normal heat dissipation through convection /
radiation from externally exposed surface. Thermal ratings are normally not of concern since the
gear reducers are located in the air stream produced by cooling tower fan. However, fan cooling
may be provided on specific request.
Direction of Rotation : As per standard practice of cooling tower gearboxes both input and output
shaft rotate 'CLOCKWISE' when viewed on to respective shaft end. For any other requirement of
shaft rotations, the gear drives should be ordered accordingly.

Selection Procedure
1.0 Gear ratio = Input sped / output speed = Motor speed / fan speed.
1.1 Model ratings as listed in rating chart correspond to maximum mechanical capacities at
1500 rpm input against respective ratios.
1.2 Service power rating = mechanical Rating (from table) / service factor *(* it is
recommended to consider a minimum service factor of 2.5 over motor power in order to
ensure performance reliability for spiral bevel / helical gear drives in cooling tower fan
service when driven by electric motor or turbine).
1.3 A suitable model can therefore be selected from the table which represents a ratio closest
to the desired one and a service power rating that meets or exceeds the motor power at
1500 rpm full load speed.
2.0 Check for output bearing L10 life (> 100000 Operating hours) in consideration with
external loads generated by the fan against catalogue chart for allowable axial load
capacity.
Design inputs required : Fan static weight, Aerodynamic axial thrust.
3.0 Check for input bearing L10 lie (>50000 Operating hours)
Design inputs required : Floating shaft length, Floating shaft weight with / without
intermediate support, fan power.

3.1 Mechanical rating = Service power rating (from the table) x 2.0 *

Greaves ABM-Series Right angle gear drives in single /double reduction are intended to satisfy
characteristic requirements and conditions encountered in cooling tower applications. These
are designed as direct replacements for the equivalent Models in terms of critical mounting
dimensions. The single and double reduction nominal ratios are also maintained exact within ± 2
% of the parallel models which will eliminate the need for costly fan pitch adjustments after
directreplacement.
The catalogue contains specification , dimensions, and ratings for selection of standard gear
drives against usual applications. Our engineers will be pleased to assist in case of unusual
conditions attracting special requirements.
