1 Introduction
The National Highways Authority of India is engaged in the development of National
Highways and as part of this endeavour, it has been decided to undertake “Four Laning of
Chikhali – Tarsod (Package IIA) Section of NH-6 from km 360.000 to Km 422.700 in the state
of Maharashtra under NHDP Phase IV on Hybrid Annuity Mode”. NHAI has awarded the
project to Vishvaraj Infrastructure Limited as Contractor.
Vishvaraj Infrastructure Ltd (Here after referred as Client) has appointed L&T Infrastructure
Engineering Limited, Chennai as the “Design Consultant” to carry out the Detailed
Engineering Design services for the project road.
2 General Arrangement
As per CA, 45 no’s of existing culverts and 25 culverts are reconstruction with box culverts and
17 no’s of existing Slab culverts are widened with box culverts and 4 no's of new culverts in this project.
As per span configuration given in CA as well as from inventory details, the culvert details
are grouped.
This report pertains to a detailed design of RCC box culvert for Group – 1 and the details of
culverts are as below
Table 2-1- Detail of culverts
The typical general arrangement for box culvert is shown in the fig.1

8.0 Load Calculation
The design loading for the bridge has been considered in accordance with IRC: 6 -2014
(Loads and Stresses) so as to sustain the most critical combinations of various loads,
forces and stress.
8.2 SIDL
Conservatively total fill height is considered as road crust including wearing coat.
Density of wearing coat is considered for road crust
Load due to road crust =(((0.50-0.1)×20)+(0.1×22.00))×0.65 = 6.63 kN/m
Weight of Crash Barrier = 12.69 kN/m

8.3 Earth pressure (EP)
Since the side walls are effectively restrained against movement, At rest earth pressure is
considered for design. Coefficient of earth pressure at rest (k o) is calculated as per below formula
(Jaky's equation)
Coefficient of earth pressure at rest ko = 1-sinφ
ko = 0.50
0.700
7.00 kN/m²
3.100 m
Note : IRC Class A - three lane and IRC Class A + IRC 70R are not governing the design, hence
not presented in the design note.
