Review Checklist
Has a new grade, type, or class been added? If so, list. YES
1. Clause 1.3(a) and 1.3(b): Designations “WM” and “WMT” were added to the definitions of
“Type W” and “Type WT” steels, respectively, to designate those steels which meet the more
restrictive chemical and mechanical requirements of Tables 3, 6 and Clause 7.7 of the
Standard. These designations meet the requirements of ASTM A992/A992M with Charpy V-
notch toughness.
2. Clause 7.7 and Tables 1, 2, 3, 6, 7, and 9(b): Grades 345WM/50WM and 345WMT/50WMT have
been incorporated to align with ASTM A992/A992M.
3. Tables 1, 2, 3, 5, and 6:Grades 450W/65W and 450WT/65WT were added.
4. Table 9(b): Grade 450WT/65WT added.
If so, is the new grade, type or class covered by a code case? Which case? No

Summary of Changes
For Information Only
Significant:
Clause 1.3(a)
Added to Type W steel: “Steels within this type meeting more restrictive chemical and mechanical requirements of Tables 3, 6 and
Clause 7.7 in this Standard shall be designated WM. This designation meets the requirements of ASTM A992/A992M.”
Clause 1.3(b)
Added to Type WT steel: “Steels within this type meeting more restrictive chemical and mechanical requirements of Tables 3, 6
and Clause 7.7 in this Standard shall be designated WMT. This designation meets the requirements of ASTM A992/A992M with
Charpy V-notch toughness.”.
Clause 1.5
Revised to establish SI units as the units of record for the purposes of the Standard. Values given in parentheses are
for information and comparison only.
Clause 5.1
Deleted “(a) basic open hearth” and renumbered the remaining sub-clauses.
Clause 5.5
Added as 2nd paragraph: “Alternatively, by agreement between purchaser and supplier, niobium and vanadium may be used
for grain refining instead of or with aluminum. Where niobium and vanadium are used as grain refining elements, the fine
austenite grain requirement shall be considered to have been met provided the niobium and or vanadium content meet the
specified requirements in ASTM A29. The content of the elements shall be reported on the “heat analysis” portion of the test
certificate.”
Clause 6.5
Changed added “or normalizing” to the title and the text of the clause. The intent is to make “controlled rolling” and
“normalized rolling” synonymous.
Clause 7.7 – Grades 345WM/50WM and 345WMT/50WMT
Clause was added:
“Grades 345WM/50WM and 345WMT/50WMT have been incorporated into this Standard to align with ASTM
A992/A992M. In order to accommodate, the following additional restrictions shall apply for these grades:
(a) When steel is aluminum killed, a minimum of .015% total aluminum shall be required.
(b) Nitrogen content shall not exceed .015% and shall include the addition of one or more nitrogen
binding elements, or one that produces a steel having a nitrogen content not greater than 0.012%
(with or without the addition of nitrogen binding elements).
(c) The maximum permitted carbon equivalent value shall be 0.47% for shapes with flange thickness
over 50 mm [2 in] and 0.45% in other shapes. The carbon equivalent value shall be based on heat
analysis. The carbon equivalent value shall be calculated as follows:
CE = C+(Mn)/6+(Cr+Mo+V)/5+(Ni+Cu)/15
(d) Vanadium shall not exceed 0.15%, and niobium shall not exceed 0.05%. (The sum of vanadium and
niobium shall not exceed 0.15%.)
(e) Molybdenum shall not exceed 0.15%..”
Table 1
Grades 450W/65W and 450WT/65WT were added.
Table 2
Grades 345WM/30WM, 345WMT/59WMT, 450W/65W and 450WT/65WT were added.
Table 3 (May 2014, replaces p. 61, July 2013)
Added reference to Clause 1.3 in parenthetical subtitle.
Grades 450W/65W and 450WT/65WT were added.
Legend notes (k), (m), (n), and (p), were redesignated as (i), (j), (k), and (l), respectively.
FOR ADDITIONAL CHANGES SEE Page 1 of this Review Checklist under “Have any chemical requirements
been changed? If so, list.”
Table 7(a) [Metric only]
The grade “260WT” was listed as “60WT” in the previous edition. This appears to be a correction of an erratum.
Table 11(f)
Most values for Designation, Lip Depth, Area, and Mass per Unit Length were completely revised.
The Minimum thickness vs. Design thickness” 2 column table at the footer of Table 11(f) was revised to show 3
columns: “Designation thickness, Minimum thickness, and Design thickness”.

Editorial/Minor:
Clause 1.4
Deleted final sentence “Legends to equations and figures are considered requirements” and replaced with “Annexes are
designated normative (mandatory) or informative (nonmandatory) to define their application.”
Clause 2
Reference to CSA G40.20-04 updated to CSA G40.20-13.
Clause 4.7 – Size designations and dimensions
Deleted references to Table (h) and “WWF and WRF shapes”.
Clause 5.2
Replaced “(0.625 in)” with “(5/8 in)”.
Clause 6 – Supply condition

Added new last sentence” Table 9(c) lists the minimum average impact energy for subsize specimens/”
Clause 8.2.5
Replaced reference to “Table 2 of CSA G40.20” with “Table 9(c)”. NOTE: Table 9(c) is an identical copy of Table 2 and
appears to have been added as a convenience.
Table 9
In parenthetical subtitle changed reference from Clause 8.2.4 to 8.2.5 and added reference to Clause 7.2.2.5 of CSA
G40.20. Repetitive parenthetical subtitle to Table 9(b) was removed.

“Imperial”.
Added Table 9(c) “Minimum average impact energy for subsize specimens”. [The same table is found in CSA G40.20

Recommended Corrections:
Change subparagraph 1.2 on cover sheet to read as follows:"1.2 Controlled Rolling or Normalizing Rolling: Controlled rolling or
normalizing rolling shall not be used as a normalizing procedure."
The intent is that the ASTM proprietary footnotes and notes be removed and not printed. The editors have historically deleted
the "boilerplate" and, in addition, have taken care of additional details such as adding the ASME logo and adding the
recommended subtitle shown above.”
