HOW TO USE THIS COMPETENCY – BASED LEARNING MATERIALS

REMEMBER to:

 Read information sheets and complete the self-checks. Suggested references

are included to supplement the materials provided in this module.
 Perform the Task Sheets and Job Sheets until you are confident that your
outputs conform to the Performance Criteria Checklist that follows the
sheets.
 Submit outputs of the Task Sheets and Job Sheets to your facilitator for
evaluation and recording in the Accomplishment Chart. Outputs shall
serve as your portfolio during the Institutional Competency Evaluation.
When you feel confident that you have had sufficient practice, ask your
trainer to evaluate you. The results of your assessment will be recorded in
your Progress Chart and Accomplishment Chart.

You must pass the Institutional Competency Evaluation for this competency
before moving to another competency. A Certificate of Achievement will be
awarded to you after passing the evaluation.

Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL)

You may already have some or most of the knowledge and skills covered in
this learner’s guide because you have:
 Been working for some time
 Already completed training in this area
If you can demonstrate to your trainer that you are competent in a
particular outcome, you don’t have to do the same training again.
Talk to your trainer about having them formally recognized. If you have a
qualification or certificate of competence from previous training, show it to your
trainer. If the skills, you acquired are still current and relevant to the unit/s of
competency they may become part of the evidence you can present for RPL. If you
are not sure about the accuracy of your skills discuss this with your trainer.

After completing this module ask your trainer to assess your competency.
Result of your assessment will be recorded in your competency profile. All the
learning activities are designed for you to complete at your own pace.

indication of faulty gasket or sealant.
 Loose bolts and nuts – check all the nuts and bolts that support the
engine and make sure it is in correct torque according to users’
manual.

has no sign of corrosion.
 Battery clamps and cables – See to it that all the cables and clamps are
secured and are not lose. Lose cables and clamps may cause shortage
of electrical current and will result to damage in electrical components
and cause fire.
 Battery case – battery case will prevent the battery from the elements.
 Battery caps – make sure that your battery caps are all secured, it will
prevent the battery from short circuit.
 Battery holder – see to it that your battery is secured and may not fall
off while traveling.
BRAKES MAINTENANCE PRE-CHECK
 Brake pedal free play – check if the pedal is free to move during
operation.
 Correct level of fluid – check the brake fluid reservoir if it has correct
level of fluid. Too little or too much fluid will hinder the function of the
breaking system.
 Correct air pressure – check the instrument cluster and look for the air
pressure indicator if it is charging while the engine is in operation.
 Braking action – check the braking action if it has amount of travel and
for accuracy.
LIGHTS MAINTENANCE PRE-CHECK
 Head light – check if the two headlights are functioning.

no cuts and exposed wirings.
 Illumination – check all the lights if it gives off enough illumination
during night time and it is visible.
LUBRICATION SYSTEM OIL MENTAINANCE PRE-CHECK
 Oil level – using the dipstick you are able to identify the oil level, if it is
below minimum level correct amount of oil may be added.
 Oil condition – while checking the oil level using the dipstick, wipe it
with clean tissue to check the oils’ clarity and viscosity.
COOLING SYSTEM PRE-CHECK
 Right amount of water in the radiator tank.
 Check the water condition.
 Check if there is any water leakage, water leakage is a result of lose
clips and faulty gaskets and sealant.
BELTS MAINTENANCE PRE-CHECK
 Check the Timing belt if it has no indication of intolerable amount of
wear and tare, replace if necessary.
 Check Fan belt it is in good condition.
 Air-con belt
 Seat belt

free flow.
 Oil filters – make sure that oil filters has correct torque and has no sign
of leakage.
FUEL MAINTENANCE PRE-CHECK
 Fuel level – before traveling make sure that it has enough level of fuel.
 Fuel tank condition – check the tank condition and make sure that it is
not damage or has no leaks.
 Fuel lines – see to it that all fuel lines must not be restricted at all and
has no sign of damage, dents, corrosion and leaks.

INFORMATION SHEET 1.2

USES OF TOOLS MATERIALS FOR ROUTINE SERVICING AND

MAINTENANCE

Learning Objetives:

After reading this information sheet, you must be able to:

1. Identify the basic necessary tools for routine servicing maintenance

2. Identify the uses of each tool that is necessary in conducting preventive
maintenance.

A collection of basic tools will make auto repairs and service maintenance easier.

Screwdrivers

It is used to loosen and tighten screws, two of the most commonly used type
of screwdrivers are Phillips-head which has cross shaped tip and Flat-head. There
are other types of screwdrivers that may be useful depending on the application,
having a collection of different screwdrivers may be useful.

Adjustable Wrench

Adjustable wrenches come in several sizes and lengths, you may also flip
them to allow a better range of motion when in use. You can use them in either
direction, and they have a small amount of moving parts for minimal maintenance.

File

File, typically 6 inches to 12 inches in length, can be used to remedy minor

electrical problems, clean rust or remove corroded parts and balance out uneven
surface area. Files can damage softer materials that are not protected, such as
plastics or rubber.

Hammer

A good hammer or mallet can straighten out a body dent from the inside. In
combination of wrench, you can have an impromptu impact wrench to loosen tight
nuts. The claw end of a hammer can act as pry bar when working on close together
parts. Rubber mullet can help on installing parts without the damage that may
occur in using a metal hammer. It would be best if you consider buying both
hammer and rubber mallet.

Hand Wrenches

A good set of combination wrenches, in metric or imperial units, together with

adjust bale wrench can loosen and break free a pair of locknuts from each other
during removal or installation. In a pinch, using two wrenches at once can take the
place of a third hand by lodging one wrench on the fastener head against a frame or
immobile part using both hands to turn the other wrench.

Ratchet and Socket Wrench Set

A simple tool that allows you to turn nuts and bolts with more ease than
regular wrench. The Ratcheting feature allows you to keep the wrench connected to
the bolt and eliminate the need to refit it with every turn of the bolt

Multimeter or Multitester

A multitester, also known as a VOM (volt-ohm-milliammeter), is an electronic

measuring instrument that combines several measurement functions in one unit. A
typical multimeter can measure voltage, current, and resistance.
Analog multimeters uses a micro ammeter with a moving pointer to display
readings.
