Problem Statement
What further decision be taken by Mr.Dagmar Hilgard, CEO of DRW Technologies after seeing
the responses of procurement managers on the mail sent by newly appointed Vice President of
procurement .

Situation Analysis
Ed Claiborne is a newly hired corporate vice president of procurement for DRW Technologies, a
company that produces advanced military systems with 21 plants in the United States.
Claiborne was hired from another company from within the industry, and the news of his arrival
was announced in an email to corporate executives and plant managers and in the company
newsletter. Ed Claiborne is a former employee of a lucrative state defense subcontractor with
experience in procurement. However, the organization of the company in which Claiborne used
to work had a hierarchical style of communication with a stern chain of command. Now, Debby
Lopez has been assigned to be Ed's assistant because of her vast experience in the DRW
technologies. After joining the company Claiborne immediately decides to send a message via
email to the procurement managers of all the plants and the message is met with unexpected
results.

Criteria
1] To reduce the cost of contracts.

2] Develop good communication methods with plant procurement managers.

Alternative
1)A more experienced person in the company should be handed over a temporary charge as
Vice President of procurement and Mr. Claiborne should work under him for a brief period.
Together they should work with each other in meeting the goal ie. To do cost saving up to 50%
over 6 years.Also together they should give visit to all the plants over this time period and
should try to work on improving efficiency and reducing cost of plants.

2) Lean engineering and 6 sigma methods should be tought as well as should be adopted in
method of procurement and manufacturing section.
3) A contact should be given to a third part to achieve the target.

Recommended alternative

The alternative where a much more experienced person is being given a charge to handle the
operations with Mr.Claibirne should be the chosen alternative. This would be an intelligent
decision because now unlike Debby Lopez this person would be having a good experience in
Management of the company as well will be accustomed with working of company as Mr.
Claiborne has more experience in working hierarchical with a strict chain of command, both can
learn from each other and come to a common consensus is to how should they meet their
target.
Over the time when Mr. Claiborne is able to understand the work culture of company then he
should be given the full charge. This method will also result in good communication between
employees.
The other two alternatives would consume more time money and resources and the present
need is to avoid these.
