During a dental visit approximately six months ago, I was informed by my dentist that my tooth
(which she filled a month earlier) was so far gone that I needed to have a root canal (saluran akar) or
have the tooth extracted (cabut gigi). I had already spent a pretty penny (uang cukupan) trying to keep
this tooth already, now to be told that all my efforts were in vain!! (sia sia) Needless to say I was not a
happy camper.
As to be expected, I am very attached to all my teeth. They have been with me nearly all my life
and to part with any one of them seemed unthinkable. I was determined that I was not going to lose my
tooth. What did ‘she’ know? Although my tooth was not paining me, it was sensitive to heat and cold
and I was unable to eat on that side of my mouth without feeling discomfort.
Living with the tooth was uncomfortable but tolerable to a certain extent. However, after a while I
began to think about my situation and wonder what sense was there in keeping an unhealthy tooth? A
root canal seemed to be the logical chose but without medical insurance I would require $2 700.00 to
cover the cost. It was not that I could not source that amount if I really tried although I had so many other
things going on but $2 700.00 for one tooth? And according to the dentist ‘You still have to be careful
because it may still have to be extracted’. Huh?
I must say two months later I had a wonderful vacation overseas. Met up with some old friends and
had a really good time. However, upon my return home the problem was still there. The more I thought
about it, I realized that I had to do something about it. It was a problem that would not just go away. I
made the hard decision about a month ago to get the problem rectified (diselesaikan). I would be brave
and get the tooth extracted. I truly believed with all of the advances of modern technology and dentistry
techniques it would be a simple procedure and life would continue as normal.

My village, Penataran, is a nice village. It’s at the foot of Kelud mountain. It’s about
10 kilometers from my house. About a kilometer from my house there is a Hinduist’s big
temple. There is a relief surround the temple telling about Ramayana story. For about 5
kilometers to the south there is Soekarno’s graveyard. It is the grave of Indonesia’s first
President. To go there you can ride horse cart, and it costs about ten thousand rupiahs.
Most people in my village work as farmers and the rest work as teacher,
policeman, etc. They are very kind and nice.
In my village everything is green. So the air is so fresh and unpolluted.
There was once an honest Woodsman who lived with his family in a forest. He worked
hard, cutting down trees so he could sell the firewood. This is how he supported his family.
One day he was cutting down trees near the edge of a deep pool of in the forest. With
strong, steady strokes he chopped away until it grew quite late in the day. The Woodsman was
tired, for he had been working since early morning, and his strokes were not as strong as they had
been. He raised his tired arms high for a final blow and his axe slipped, flew out his hands and
landed into the pool, sinking to the bottom. The Woodsman cried out, “No! All is lost!” he stood
and weeping. The god Mercury suddenly appeared. “What is wrong Woodsman?” asked the god.
The Woodsman wept, “My axe fell into the water! It is too deep and I cannot get it back! My axe
is all I have to make a living with, and I don’t have enough money to buy a new one. My family
will have nothing to eat.” Hearing this, Mercury dove with a splash down to the bottom of the
pool. When he surface he held in his hand an axe that made of pure gold! Mercury held up the
golden axe and asked, “Is this your axe, Woodsman?” The Woodman’s mouth fell open as he
looked at the golden axe, but he shook his head. “No. That is not my axe.” Mercury dove again
with a splash down to the bottom of the pool. This time when he surfaced he held in his hand an
axe that was made of pure silver! “Is this your axe, Woodsman?” asked Mercury. The honest
Woodsman gazed with amazement at the beautiful silver axe, but again shook his head and said,
“No. That is not my axe. My axe is just an ordinary old axe with a plain wooden handle.” Mercury
dove down for the third time with a splash, and when he surfaced he held in his hand the
Woodsman’s battered old axe. “Is this your axe, woodsman?” he asked. The Woodsman was so
glad his axe had been found! He cried out, “That’s my axe!” He eagerly took the axe and thanked
the kind god again and again.
Mercury looked at the Woodsman and smiled. “I admire your honesty, Woodsman. And
it shall be rewarded. You may keep all three axes, the gold and the silver as well as your own.
“And then Mercury disappeared as suddenly as he had come. The Woodsman gathered the three
axes in his arms and hurried home were he was met by his wife. She was so happy when she saw
the gold and silver axes, she cried out, “Husband! We’ll never be hungry again!”
