Parallelogram Law

If and represent two forces and φ represents the angle between them, their

effects can be replaced by the effect of on force, which called the resultant of

forces (R) and as follows:

R
φ

R β

Then

= + +2 cos

Apply triangle law:

= =
sin(180 − φ) sin α sin β

Special Cases
Case 1, the angle φ between and equal to zero, then:

3
R

= + +2 cos 0 = +

Case 2, the angle φ between and equal to 90o, then:

R
90

= + +2 cos 90= +

= tan ( ) the angle between R and

Case 3, the angle φ between and equal to 180o, then:

= + +2 cos 180 = + −2 = ( − )
= −

Applications

Problem1:
A cart is pulled uniformly along two cables using two horses as shown below, the

tension forces along the two cables are = 900 and = 1100 and the

angle between them are = 60˚.

Determine the magnitude of the resultant force ( )and the angles between the

resultant and the two tension forces.

= 1100

= 60˚ =?
Cart
= 900

Solution:

Using the Parallelogram Law:

= 900
= 1100
180 −
φ
β

= + + 2 cos = 900 + 1100 + 2 × 900 × 1100 × cos 60

= 1734.9 = 1.7349

5
Apply triangle law:

= =
sin(180 − ) sin φ sin β
1734.9 1100
=
sin(180 − 60) sin φ
1100
φ = sin ( ) = 33.3
1734.9
sin 180 − 60

1734.9 900
=
sin(180 − 60) sin β
900
β = sin ( ) = 26.7
1734.9
sin 180 − 60

Problem2:
A steel pulley is used in luggage’s transfer (from ground level to other roofs). If a

box that weight W= 0.5 kN is being lifted by a worker that weight F = 0.7 kN

using a fabric rope and the pulley.

Determine the force that which the man’s feet transfer to the ground.

Pulley

Box,
F=0.5kN

, = 0.7

, =?

Solution:

Using the Parallelogram Law:

The angle φ between and is equal to 180o, then:

=√ + +2 cos 180 = √ + −2 = ( − ) = − =
0.7 − 0.5 = 0.2 ↓( )
