This is a condensed offense centered on simple concepts that can be learned quickly and efficiently.
FORMATIONS
OFFENSIVE LINE SCHEME / CONCEPTS / RULES
OVERVIEW
Our offensive line uses two basic blocking schemes/concepts in our run game attack…..”GAP-DOWN” and “ZONE”. Gap-Down is
a very popular scheme used in power run game because it gives the offensive line the advantage of down blocking defenders as
opposed to trying to overpower them head to head. Zone is used in our spread sets, it allows us to account for any type of
front, odd or even, blitz or no blitz, by following a simple set of basic rules.
STANCE = All 5 offensive lineman (and tight ends) should always be in a solid 3pt stance, feet should be 2 inches wider than
their shoulder width, their appropriate hand should be down on the ground with 5 fingertips in the grass with very light weight.
Their back should be flat, and their head should always be rolled up to see the opposing front.
SPLITS = Split should be 1ft from center to guard, 1ft from guard to tackle, and 2ft from tackle to tight end (if any).
(Inside Zone = Zeke) = Inside zone is a run play that is targeted to run between the tackles. We are only running one inside zone
play….Zeke. Zeke can be run by the QB handing off to the A-Back(44/45) or by faking the handoff and following the A-Back
(14/15). This is irrelevant to the offensive lineman. All they are listening for in the huddle is the hole number (4 or 5) so they can
follow their rules if it is to the right (44 Zeke) or to the left (45 Zeke).
**Rules STEP-CHECK-CLIMB
A. When you first get to the line, look and see if you are “covered” or “uncovered”. Covered means you have a defender
on the line of scrimmage between the nose on your face and the nose on the face of the next playside lineman next
to you, if there is then you are “covered”. (Keep in mind this can be a defensive lineman or a linebacker walked up
showing blitz) If there is no one lined up on you head up, playside gap, or head up on your playside partner then you
are “uncovered”.
STEP = When the ball is snapped you are going to take a 6 inch power step with your playside foot. (This is where our
hands are loaded and we are preparing to bring our punch)
CHECK = (If Covered) You proceed to block your playside defender while watching for a LB coming late in your
playside gap.
CLIMB = (Only if uncovered) Once you take your second step, if there is no defender in your playside gap or trying to
cross your partner's face then you “climb” straight to the playside linebacker and block him.
OUTSIDE ZONE BLOCKING (SAM)
(Outside Zone = Sam) Outside zone is the opposite of inside zone, as that the play is designed to go OUTSIDE of the tackles
instead of inside. Some of the concepts are generally the same, but the other big difference is it is a very fast moving block
in which the offensive lineman is literally in a “race” with the defender to get outside leverage on the defender.
BUCKET STEP = All 5 lineman will take a bucket step to gain angle leverage depending on if the ae covered or
uncovered. If they are covered, they will take a shallow bucket step so they do not over pursue their target, and allow
the defender to cross their face back to the inside. If they are uncovered, they take a deep bucket step and fire out
laterally down the line of scrimmage looking to overtake a defender.
3-STEP = Once you have taken your deep bucket step (because your uncovered) you quickly take 3 steps running
laterally, if no defender has shown for you to overtake by the 3rd step then you climb to the LB flowing across.
CLIMB = ***See the last sentence in the 3-Step rule.
PASS PROTECTION
Pass protection is probably the simplest part of our offensive line scheme, we use a simple Man scheme called B.O.B. (Big
on Big) The center will make the protection call when he gets to the line and sees whether it is a 4-man defensive front, or
a 5-man defensive front.
● 50 FRONT = The center will call out “BOB” which means that each lineman is matched up man to man with a
defender.
MOTIONS / SHIFTS
We use two simple motions and for two simple reasons. “Boom” and “Zoom”. Both are basic jet motions across the
formation. The only two guys we will send in motion are our “B” receiver and our “Z” receiver.
We will also employ only one shift in our offensive attack…”Y-Trade”. This simply means that the TE (Y) will line up on one
side, the QB will call shift and the TE will switch over to the opposite side..
BOOM = Jet motion with the “B” receiver to the opposite side of the formation from where he lines up.
ZOOM = Jet motion with the “Z” receiver to the opposite side of the formation from where he lines up.
Z 2-Back
B 3-Back
A 4-Back
