Reaction Paper

1. Do you agree or disagree?

Technology drives us away from real-time conversations to virtual with the use of social

media. Even when we are with our families and friends, we are ‘being together, while

not being together’ as what Sherry Turkle said. We think and say that we enjoy other

people’s company, but most of the time we are on our smartphones and devices surfing

the internet and using social media. I also agree with how she says that people think

‘No one is listening’. It’s funny how there’s 7 billion people out there in the world but we

say that no one is listening when in actual fact we are shutting them out by sticking to

our devices. This and the fact that we can change what we want to say over text before

sending a message would also result in us choosing to socialize over the text rather

than face-to-face. I think we should socialize in real-time more as no matter how

awkward the situation or if we ‘stumble, hesitate or lose our words’, we reveal ourselves

to each other. We define who we really are, and not behind our devices.

2. Advantage and Disadvantage of technology in the common process.

* Advantage- Computer networking has become one of the most successful ways of

sharing information, where all computers are wirelessly linked together by a common

network. Now, businesses and organizations heavily rely on it to get messages and

information across to essential channels. Not only has that it benefited establishments,

but also individuals, as they also need to share important information every day.

* Disadvantage- The idea that technology has drawn humans away from the real world

ultimately disconnecting from real people, conversations, and situations. I do agree with

Sherry's synopsis that people are so into talking through text that they are forgetting

how to actually have real conversations with people. But, I also feel that people texting

can also have an actual conversation as well. In this time era technology has become

the center point of life. In most cases people can not even function unless they have

their phone on them or have control of other technological device, but I feel that is the

consequence of the world evolving. Communication is changing heavily and causing

people to question if technology continues to advance what will become of reality and

real communication.

3. Cite personal experience of technology in your daily life

-Technology has impacted every aspect in my life today, and education is no exception.

Technology has changed my education in so many ways. First, technology has

expanded the access to education and there are huge amounts of information (books,

images, videos, audio) that are available through the Internet and that will enable me to

empower myself with knowledge.
