INTRODUCTION

Throughout history there have been multiple occasions that hundreds of thousands of

people have died because disease-causing germs have been spread through a community by a

polluted water supply. Disease-causing germs and chemicals can find their way into water

supplies. When this happens the water becomes polluted or contaminated and when people drink

it there is a possible that they can become very sick. Some rural areas often depend on local

water sources such as wells, hand pumps, river, etc, which are in many cases contaminated.

According to Institute of Medicine (IOM), men should drink at least 101 ounces of water (13

cups) and for women should drink at least 74 ounces of water (9 cups) per day. But in some

cases, people in rural areas facing a limit of water per day due to the poor quality of water.

Water is one of the main needs of the people to be able to survive in this world. Drinking

unsafe water can lead in several diseases that may kill people. In today’s world, there are several

studies that there is an alternative and cheap way of cleaning water which you can do at home.

This device is made by recyclable materials such as plastic bottles and PVC Pipe. It is design to

clean water using sunlight.

Filtering water is essential to keep harmful from drinking water. It can provide better

tasting and better smelling drinking water by removing chlorine, chemicals, pesticides, heavy

metals and bacterial contaminants. Drinking clean, filtered water protects the body from disease

and leads to overall greater health and energy.

1
Background of the Study

Water pollution in the Philippines and a lack of proper sewage kills 55 people every day.

Nine million of Filipinos out of one hundred million Filipinos are rely on unsafe water supplies.

There are an estimated 2.2 million metric tons of organic water pollution that occur in the

Philippines each year. According to Katrina Arianne Ebora, notes that one of the biggest

problems of exceeding 30 million does not have enough sanitation facilities. There have been

several studies that more than 2 billion people worldwide lack safe drinking in their home.

Additionally, 1,2 billion people do not have access to clean and safe drinking water, and 2.4

billion people lack sanitation. Every year, 5 million people die of waterborne diseases.

In developing countries, waterborne diseases are a major problem which contributes to

the vicious circle that people are in. People can fall ill from waterborne diseases, this is caused

by using insufficiently disinfected water, by implementing non-hygienic food preparation and by

insufficient personal hygiene.

According to India’s official Ground Water Resources Assessment, more than one-sixth

of the country’s groundwater supply is overused. Furthermore, 80% of the country’s surface

water is polluted. These problems give rise to numerous waterborne diseases which if not treated

properly and on time can prove to be fatal. One of the proven methods is to invest in a high-

quality water purifier. It will help defend you and your family against harmful waterborne

diseases.

2
Statement of the Problem

The study entitled “Solar-Powered Energy for Water Filtration using Plastic Bottles and

PVC Pipe” to make an alternative and cheap way of cleaning water.

The researcher aims to answer the following questions:

1. What is the results of Filtered Water according to pH level from:

a. Mixture of water and soil (dirty water)

b. Salt water

2. What is the results of Filtered Water according to Hardness from:

a. Mixture of water and sand (dirty water)

b. Salt water

3. How does a solar – powered water filtration work?

4. How long does it take to filter the water through the sun?

5. Is it safe to use Solar-Powered Energy for Water Filtration to the community as an

alternative way of producing a clean water?

Hypothesis

H0: The use of Solar-Powered Energy for Water Filtration will not be good to the community as

an alternative way of producing a clean water.

3
Significance of the Study

Benefiting the study are the various sectors as follows:

1.1 Campers. When planning on camping, it is important to bring our water needs. But there are

some circumstances that the water we have brought is not enough. And, in order to have a

water, they refills their water bottle from a lake. Not all water sources are safe to drink, that’s

why through the help of this device can provide better tasting drinking water by removing

chemicals, chlorine, or even bacterial contaminants through direct sunlight.

1.2 Families. To provide knowledge and further information about cleaning water through direct

sunlight using recyclable materials.

1.3 Future Researchers. To give a reference or guide for further research about making an

alternative way of cleaning a water.

Scope and Delimitation of the Study

In this study, the researcher uses recycled materials such as plastic bottles and PVC pipe

to make an alternative device for water filtration through direct sunlight. The observation may

take at least 3 – 5 hours in order to be sure and be confident about the result of the study.

4
Definition of Terms

The following terms were defined base on how the researcher used it.

Solar Energy. It creates clean, renewable power from the sun and benefits the environment.

Water. The basic needs of the people to be able to survive in this world.

Waterbron Diseases. Caused by drinking contaminated or dirty water.

Water Filtration. Removes impurities by lowering contamination of water using a fine physical

barrier, a chemical process, or a biological process.
