According to Alsubaie et. al. (2019), Quality of life is influenced by different social

factors including relationships, friends, teachers, moved away from home, expectations of

parents, and peer pressure. Also we found that social support from friends or, significant others

were predictors of the social relationships domain of quality of life. Social support from family

as a stronger predictor of the psychological domain of quality of life when compared to the social

relationships domain may be explained partly from the literature that suggests individuals seek

emotional support from family in critical crises and that this will increase the quality of

psychological wellbeing. On the other hand, social support from significant others as a predictor

of the social relationships instead of the psychological domain of quality of life maybe informed

by the need for forming social connections and being part of the university and the wider

community, as such relations encourage the quality of social relationships. The social

relationships domain of quality of life was positively correlated with the three sources of social

support (family, friends, significant others), and is likely to be influenced by both scales

assessing social interactions and the quality of such relationships. The greater pressure on

university students to do well in academic tasks and to identify who they will become in the

future is a possible explanation for some students reporting increased psychological problems

and lowered quality of life. Our results showed a significant positive correlation between quality

of life in the psychological and social relationships domains. This is likely to be due to strong

and stable social relationships increasing the quality of the psychological wellbeing. Generally,

this study showed that sources of social support showed a significant impact on depression and

quality of life for university students and represents a valuable resource for universities in

protecting and supporting the mental health of students. Social support from family and friends
has a significant role in decreasing the risk of depressive symptoms and increasing quality of life

in the psychological domain. On the other hand, social support from significant others and

friends has a significant role in improving the quality of life in social relationships domain in

university students. These findings provide knowledge for the development of effective

interventions and prevention strategies for both students and universities. Increasing the

awareness of specific sources of social support will be protective of the social and emotional

well-being of students.

According to Fernandez (2011), Filipino adolescents are also found to relate with many

sources of social support, with different social support providers perceived as having a particular

niche in terms of the kind of social support they provide. After the peers, the Filipino mother

consistently ranks second in terms of a boy’s source of almost all kinds of social support. It

appears that a mother provides a dynamic spectrum in terms of the variety of support she gives.

The Filipino father, on the other hand, has the niche as the one who provides the most challenge

and role modeling support. What these two types of support suggest is that the role of the father

is to inspire his child to stretch himself beyond his limits, to grow more and be more.Analysis

showed that siblings emerged as another very frequent source of perceived support, even more

than teachers and other adults in school.

According to Ines (2019), Filipino college students recognize the need to undergo

counseling if a person is showing signs of depression. This treatment was at the top of the list of

possible effective treatments. Such trend was not observed from previous studies made on the

same topic. This again may have something to do with the fact that students knew before they

answered the survey that the research is being conducted by a counseling office. Going to church

and prayers are also seen as important by Filipino college students to combat symptoms of

depression which may have something to do with Filipinos religiosity and/ or belief in higher

being. This trend was also observed in the students’ nominations for the item that having

religious beliefs can be a useful strategy to prevent depression. Other strategies that Filipino

college students believe to be helpful in preventing depression are aligned with what

professionals recommend (Morgan & Jorm, 2009). This includes contacting family members and

friends, making regular time for relaxing activities, keeping active, never drinking alcohol in

excess and not using drugs. Filipino college students mostly agreed that seeking help from

professionals such as counselors, psychologists, psychiatrists and even medical doctors can be

beneficial to someone showing signs of depression which shows their recognition that the

problem may be addressed by experts, however, family and friends were again the topmost

choices which reflects crucial role in providing support to a depressed individual. In addition,

teachers also appeared in the students’ list of people that can likely be helpful for a person

showing symptom of depression. Such findings have important implications as to what these

people can do in order to help a depressed individual.
