Special Attention
1. The gas genset operator must read this Operation and Maintenance Manual and abide by the
operation and routine rules in this manual.
2. The gas genset room should be spacious, bright area away from open flames, and require the
installation of ventilation fans to ensure good ventilation and installation of lightning protection
devices, gas leak alarm device should be installed, indoor installation of lighting, switches,
wiring and electrical explosion-proof measures should be adopted, and the stable fixation,
equipped with fire extinguishers and other fire equipment etc.
3. The external main channel of the gas line must be installed on the gas valve (stainless steel
ball valve), U-type drain valve, anti-tempering device. The gas pipeline should be cleaned
(high pressure air) after welding, the gas line the diameter please refer to gas genset set
attachments maintenance instructions to configure.
4. The gas must be desulphurization and dehydrate and dust removal, sulfur less than
0.20g/Nm3, gas pressure form 2 to 100kPa, above this pressure reducer must be used for
vacuum, biogas calorific value≥ 21MJ/m3 (5000kcal/m3), natural gas calorific value ≥
33.5MJ/m3 (8000 kcal/m3), or gas engine power will decline.
5. The Gas GenSets cooling water must be softened water or antifreeze.
6. External output load cables, batteries and battery connections, please refer to the use and
maintenance manual requirements for gas turbine configurations attachments
7. Before operating the engine, check the engine oil and coolant adequacy.
8. If not successful within 10 seconds starting gas engine should start again every two minutes,
if not three consecutive successful start, you need to check and find out the reason gas engines
9. After successfully starting the engine, run at idle speed for 5 to 10 minutes warm-up, before
the engine is stopped, but also idle running 5 to 10 minutes
10. Before the use of the new users, should be required to carry 60h commissioning. After the
cold start slowly increase speed, non-sudden increase in speed and turn over a long time at idle
11. After stopping, if the ambient temperature may be lower than +5 ℃, should the tank, gas
generators and oil cooler water in the net, and remember to forget to put water inside the net oil
cooler
12. Use a good air filter, oil filter make the engine more reliable work, can extend the life of.
13. It is forbidden that the engine works without air filter and unfiltered air enters into the
cylinder.
14. Must meet specified standards for gas, oil, and must be filtered and cleaned it through pipes
or containers.
15. Inspection and maintenance for electric system must be performed by personnel familiar
with electrical knowledge.
16.The storage life before unpack of gas genset is one year. If it exceed the storage life, the gen

PREFACE
Weifang Naipute Gas Gensets Co., Ltd is a high-tech enterprise which develops and
produces gas engines & gas genset. The gas engine products into NQ, ND, NW three series,
both four-stroke, high-speed , water-cooled, high-energy spark ignition gas engine (NPT
registered trademark of the Company). They have high reliability, good economy, advanced
control and low emissions, low noise, simple operation, easy maintenance, low operation cost.
NPT gas engine has 18 different types according it’s total displacement, with different
cylinder numbers, 3, 4,6,8. According the combustion theory, it can be classified into
stoichiometric and lean burn types. It’s rotary speed range normally is 1500 to 1800r/min, and
the power range is 10kW to1100kW. The type symbols meaning are show as following:

NPT gas engine is widely used for generator set, pump set, compressor set, stationary power
output set and etc.
This manual introduces the main technical data, structure features, operation and
maintenance methods and inspection points of NPT gas genset.
In order to make NPT gas genset provide better service for you, it’s better for users to know
the basic structures and the engine operating methods so as to play its active role.

durability advantage. Note: The cylinder head and engine can’t be universal.
③Crankshaft and flywheel
ND series and NW98D, NW116D gas engine crankshaft using integrated forged steel
crankshaft, and the remaining gas engines using high-strength cast iron as a whole, the
surface is specially treated; flywheel and flywheel housing made of high strength gray cast
iron as a whole..
④Piston and connecting rod assembly
Connecting rod is forged alloy steel as a whole. Pistons made of high-strength aluminum
alloy casting, and with three or four piston ring groove, the other chamber is specially designed
to be used in gas engines basin shape. Combustion chamber is a basin type special design for
gas engine. ND series and NW98D, NW116D, NW363D gas engine piston has a internal oil
cool cavity.
NOTE: The piston is dedicated gas engine, there will be corresponding changes in the
fuel changes, such as the need to change the fuel, please contact us.
⑤Gear train
Gas engine gear train shown in Figure 4, the end surface of the tooth are engraved on a
regular compliance, assembly, they must be aligned between the symbols, so as to ensure
proper valve timing.

⑥Camshaft
Camshaft is made in whole or split alloy steel forged, and thus the hardening process,

which cam profile shaped line is designed specifically for gas engines.
⑦Cooling system
The gas engine is used to force the coolant circulation system. The system consists of
pumps, thermostat, fan and heat sink (or use a heat exchanger) and the corresponding piping
components. To give the gas engine to provide good cooling effect, and to ensure the optimum
coolant temperature range, the gas engine has a good working condition. System diagram
shown in Figure 5.

③Speed controller
Notice:
●The ignition controller and electronic control systems has dual protection for gas engine
speed against speeding.
●Speed control speed sensor signal only for Speed control, not to be shared with other
devices.
Weifang resistant Putnam Gas Generating Equipment Co. optional electronic speed
controllers are USA GAC company EED6500, ESD5526E , ESD5330 three kinds, while the
size of the actuator according to the unit's optional ATB401T1-12 and ATB401T1-24 and
ATB652T2N14-24, also according to the customer's needs to choose foreign brands, such as
the USA Woodward, Germany HEINZMANN, etc., see the supplied detailed electrical
schematics.
EED6500, ESD5526E, ESD5330 electronic speed controller is by GAC design and
manufacture, with a precise and rapid speed, maximum current restriction and protection,
adjustable rate steady tone, set the high and low speed range, starting throttle limit, acceleration
and deceleration time control, over speed protection, a successful start speed signal output, and
automatic machine functions. Its working principle is the controller and the electromagnetic
actuators, magnetic sensors, etc. to form a closed control loop, in order to complete a wide
range of engine speed control. And other controllers compared to its speed performance,
full-featured, easy installation and maintenance, high reliability, suitable for the control of
various types of gas engines.
ATB401T1-12 and ATB401T1-24 and ATB652T2N14-24, Integrated electronic throttle,
connected speeder, has a simple structure, easy installation, high reliability and no need to
refuel maintenance, which ATB401T1-12 for 30 kW gas engine for electronic governor,
ATB401T1-24 applies to 60 kW gas engine for electronic speed control, ATB652T2N14-24 are
for 200 kW gas engine for electronic speed control, its installation is shown in Figure 13, the
installation requirements are as follows:

Warning:
In order to improve gas engine thermal efficiency, Engine design with high compressed
ratio. Nature gas engine only burn NG or methane .Never use propane.Because
Propane and methane have different chemical character .The octane number of Propane is
lower
●Lube than
oilmethane. Easily caused engine knocking even damaged .
Quality class: Oil is classified according to its quality and characteristics, usually on the
basis of API and GB standard.
Oil which is allowed to use
API class: CC、CD、CD-Ⅱ、CE
GB class: CC、CD、CD-Ⅱ、CE
CD class oil should be selected for non-supercharged gas engines while the CF class oil
for the supercharged ones. It is allowable for the low-quality oil to be replaced with
high-quality oil.
●Viscosity
The viscosity of the oil is , to a great extent, determined by the temperature. Refer to
figure for appropriate oil viscosity class(SAE class).
Please refer to the right figure for the oil viscosity and select the most appropriate oil. The
situation where the environment temperature is close to the temperature limit will have some
influence on the cold start performance but not necessarily damage the engine.
Do not exceed the temperature limit for long time so as to keep the abrasion within a minimum
extent. Multi-class oil could be used so that it won’t be necessary to change the oil during the
seasonal alternation period. The fuel consumption rate could be lowered by using multi-class
oil (light oil especially)

●Coolant
Coolant of gas engine should be soft water adding anticorrosive agent and long effect
anti-freezing coolant. Anti-freezing coolant and soft water are shown in table 6 to table 7.

● Inspection instrument
In order to know the fuel pressure, a “U” tube for water or other type of pressure gauge
should be get ready.
Timing light is an important instrument for checking the ignition timing (see fig16).For
using the ignition timing light, please make sure the right direction of the clip.
● Wipe off the antirust agent and corrosive-resistant agent from exposed parts.
● Inspect the water and oil plug, water temperature sensor and oil pressure sensor, get all the
parts already.
Notice:
● Record the gas engine model and produce series number on the User information
feedback opinion card.
● Pay attention to the oil seal date.
3.3.2 Hoisting requirements
Inappropriate hoisting might damage the gas engine during hoisting.
There are two M16 handling bots with a ring. When hoisting the engine, it is recommend to
adopt hoisting tools shown in fig 17 And the crankshaft should be kept at level.
Warning:
It is inappropriate to use a rope in a triangle to hoist the engine. Because if the
rope, the hoisting rings are not kept in a straight line, the handling bolt might be
damaged or even fractured during the hoisting process, which may eventually result in
the damage of the engine. Therefore, the users must pay much attention to this.
3.3.3 Installation requirements
●The room installed plant should be spacious, bright, away from open flame. Ventilation fans
are required to ensure good ventilation. Gas leak alarms and lightning protection devices are
required. Indoor lighting, switches, circuit and its electrical equipments should adopt
explosion-proof measures, and should be fixed reliable, equipped with fire extinguishers and
other fire-fighting equipment. The genset should be installed on the hard concrete floor. Four
shock absorbing rubber pads are required to reduce vibration under the unit site. If the ground
is uneven, thin steel pad is needed under the unit site.

Notice: 1. The gensets must be reliable grounding in accordance with the relevant
national standard requirements. The grounding resistance is less than 4 ohms.
2. The room must install lightning protection devices according to
relevant national standards.
Notice:The gas supply pressure is the pressure when the gas pass into the genset.
The lowest air supply pressure requires 2-5 kPa for different types of gas or the same
type but different quality. If the gas supply pressure is insufficient, the unit can normal
starter, but may not reach the rated power.
3.4.2 Pull out the dipstick, check if the oil quality and oil level meet the requirements.
Otherwise, change the oil, or add oil.
Oil grades: when the ambient temperature is higher than -15 ° C, recommend
15W/40-CF grade lubricants. When the ambient temperature is below -15 ° C,
recommend 5W/30-CF.
The amount of oil: the following table is a reference. Specific oil quantity based on the
actual oil scale.

Oil replacement cycle: after the genset continued to run 50h, change the oil the first time;
run 250h, change the oil the second time; Since then, the genset runs approximately each
500h, change the oil(concrete intervals based on oil quality.)
When the engine during normal operation, the oil level should between the two engraved
lines; when start a new machine, the oil level should be higher the engraved lines a bit; after

the normal operation, the liquid level shall not be lower the engraved lines.
Notice:During the using process, the oil level should be closely monitored. If the liquid
level is increase suddenly, cooling water may leak into the oil. If this happens,
Downtime promptly, troubleshooting, injects kerosene or diesel fuel to clean the oil
sump. Replace the qualified oil; If the liquid suddenly dropped, you should immediately
check the lubrication system for leaks, troubleshooting, and then re-add qualified oil.
3.4.3 Check the cooling water in the water tank, filled with water;If is the NW363 engine,
check the compressed air bottle pressure is normal (15~30bar).
3.4.4 Check the appearance of the genset, to see whether the various parts are complete;
whether each pipeline is connected correct or seal strictly; whether the chassis and parts links
firmly and no loose phenomenon.
3.5Operation procedure
3.5.1 Starting up
3.5.1.1 Switch “DC power” to “ON "," idle / rated " to " idle "; then press the" manually
select "button on the control panel to enter the" manual mode "
3.5.1.2 Open the gas valve, connected to the gas source. Press the "start "
button, the genset will be started. Automatically determine the starting successful, it will idle
run to warm-up the genset. At this time, observe whether the instrument indicate normal.
When the water temperature, oil temperature rise up to 40 ℃, switch the “idle / rated” to
“rated”. The unit will grow faster, running at rated speed. At this time, observe whether the
instrument indicates normal.
When the engine works normally, the reference values of the parameters:
① Water temperature in the range of 70-85 ℃ is appropriate, shall not be less than
60 ℃, also should not be higher than 90 ° C; (higher than 90 ° C alarms, higher than
95 °C downtime)
②Oil temperature in the range of 70-85 ℃ is appropriate, shall not be higher than 90 °
C; (higher than 90 °C alarms but machine not stop)
③The oil pressure should be in the range of 250-550kPa; (less than 200kPa alarms, below
150kPa machine stops)
The above data are for reference only. When the fuel is different types of gas or engine at
different operating conditions, the data may be slightly different.
Notice:
Start continuous operation shall not exceed 10 seconds. If first starter unsuccessful,
starting again at least 30 seconds after the interval; should immediately stop if the unit
fails to start three times. Identify the cause and eliminate before starting again.

Wait until the load indicator lights, press the “ON ”button, the unit will
detect whether have the mains supply. If there are no mains, the unit switches on, switch on
indicator lights. It is a stand-alone mode, the genset can be added or subtracted load. The
power factor should be controlled around 0.8 lag; stand-alone run unit should gradually open
the electrical equipment to increase the load, open big first and then open small; if have mains
supply, the unit is in parallel grid connection mode. The unit will automatically adjust the
engine governor (GOV) and generator (AVR) synchronized with the mains, and then switch on.
If successful switch on indicator lights, and automatically add load. Users can press the "active
power increase" or "active power decrease” according to the actual situation by manually
adjust the size of the load (in general, long-running units, the load should be controlled 70% to
85% of the rated power of the unit).
3.5.3Stopping
3.5.3.1 Uninstall
Before the unit is shut down, first shed the load. Stand-alone unit through the gradual
closure of the electrical equipment to reduce the load. Shut off should the big first and then the
small; require the user to the network automatically and run unit by "active power decreases
button, power generating units will be gradually decline.
3.5.3.2 Separating brake
When gas generator set power down to nearly one fifth of the rated power, the basic gas
generator sets can disconnect the air switch quickly; the ATS automatic transformational gas
generator sets can press the "Switch to the mains button” to transfer the load to the mains;
automatically parallel grid gas generator sets press the “Switch off button ”.
After the speed increased rapidly, it will be back to the rated speed.
3.5.3.3 Reduced to idle running
Gas generator set will run a few minutes at the rated speed, transfer the “idle / rate” switch
to the "idle" position, the unit speed quickly reduce to idle run

Notice:1.During the normal operation of the unit, tour inspection once every half
hour, observed oil temperature, water temperature, oil pressure, differential
pressure, gas pressure and water, the oil level, make a record on the unit parameters
every two hours.
2.When gensets due to speeding, over-current, reverse power, high water
temperature, high oil temperature, low oil pressure other malfunction, causing
sudden shutdown should immediately cut off the gas source to find the cause of the
malfunction and the exclusion only after re-boot.
3.When emergency happens, you can press the “emergency stop” button to stop
the unit. After processing failure, you must switch the air switch or electrically
operated air switch manually to the breaking position, or spin ATS switch manually
to zero, and then start the gas genset.
Special Notice:
After an emergency stop, you must jigger immediately. During the period gas
supply and power supply should be cut off to ensure personal safety. Disc crankshaft
by hand, while motive pumps pump oil by hand (if any).After the water
temperature, oil temperature dropped to below 50 ℃, then check.

Every day
Check the ignition system and the generator for electrical leakage or spark over.
Repair them in time if necessary. Check if there are loosened spark lead between
coil and spark plug.

Check all accessory connection. Find the loosened bolts ,nuts and clips.
Clean the air the surface of air cleaner and engine body.
Check the explosion-proof valve, repair if necessary.

Ignition ECU controlled the ignition timing automatically. In general speaking, we don’t
need adjust ignition timing. But in some case, we should turn the signal generating plate to
adjust the ignition timing. Turn the plate same direction with the rotate, the ignition advanced
angle will delay. Or the ignition will advance.
●Intake and exhaust valve clearance adjustment method:
Four-cylinder inline engine cold gas valve clearance adjustment method
Before the valve clearance adjustment, first remove the cylinder head housing, and then
rotating the crankshaft, let the flywheel housing pointer aligned on the flywheel timing "O"
degree engraved lines. In order to determine whether the first cylinder in the starting point of
expansion stroke, crankshaft slightly rotated to observe the intake and exhaust valves of the
first cylinder in a stationary state, the first 1,4 cylinder piston are at the upper dead point
position, and then refer table 12, the clearance of the intake and exhaust valves of each
cylinder.

●Air-fuel ratio calibration
In order to adapt to the different components of the gas, we have designed an air flow regulator
(Figure 21). Control air flow (fix with nut) through adjust throttle opening, and then adjust
the air-fuel ratio. This is conducive to starting and stabilization of the gas engine.
