The students will be divided into 3 groups. The example
of volcanoes with the same set of names will be
distributed evenly to each group. The group will classify
them active, dormant or inactive volcano. Use the tape
to arrange the volcanoes into the corresponding column

4. Discussing new concepts and practice new skills

Guide. Questions: (Pick in a bowl)
1. Will you give a brief description of what is
active, dormant and inactive volcano? Pick one
of your answers among the volcanoes under
each column and explain how does it became an
active, dormant or inactive volcano?
2. Choose one of your answer from one column
and transfer it to different column, Explain how
it can become that kind of volcano. What makes
the active volcano different from the dormant
volcano aside from the possibility of erupting
again?
3. Why do you think volcanoes under the inactive
volcanoes are not going to erupt again? Is it safe
to live near these kind of volcanoes? Why?
EXPLAIN
Developing Mastery
CLASSIFICATIONS OF VOLCANO
1. ACTIVEE VOLCANO- it is one that is erupting or
has shown signs that it may erupt in the near
future
2. DORMANT VOLCANO – a type of volcano which
has not erupted for at least 2,000 years but is
expected to erupt again
3. INACTIVE VOLCANO- a type of volcano which has
not erupted for at least 10,000 years

Finding practical applications of concepts and skills in
daily living
Provide a reading text for the students to read and
let them answer the guide questions
DID YOU KNOW?
Mount Pinatubo in the Philippines is an active volcano
which has an elevation of 1,486 meters and was located
in Zambales. It erupted in 1991 which was one of the
largest record during the 20th century. It ejected roughly
ten billion tons of ash onto the surrounding landscape
and millions of tons of sulfur dioxide gas into the
atmosphere. The evacuation radius was increased to 40
km. However, the volcanic ash and rain from Typhoon
Yunya, which hit at the same time, formed heavy muds
that rained down on densely populated areas. About 200
people died from collapsed roofs.
QUESTIONS:
1. What kind of volcano is the MT. Pinatubo?
2. When did it erupted? What are the recorded
casualties?
3. Why do you think people keeps on living near the
volcanoes? What benefits can we get from
volcanoes?
4. How do volcanic eruptions affect the society?
Supply the missing information in each boxes.

2. Which is the most active volcano in the
Philippines?
A. Mt.Taal B. Mt.Mayon

3. Which type of volcano has not erupted for at least
2,000 years but is expected to erupt again?

ENGAGE
2. Establishing a purpose of the lesson for the lesson
Introduce Apolaki Caldera to the students
 Apolaki Caldera is a volcanic caldera with a
diameter of 150 km (93 mi), making it the World’s
largest caldera. It is located within the Benham
Rise (Philippine Rise) and was discovered by
Jenny Anne Barretto, a Filipina marine
geophysical and her team. The name “Apolaki”
means “giant Lord” in Filipino and is the mythical
God of sun and war. The rise has been known to
the people of Catanduanes as Kaliping-awan
which means “loneliness from an isolated place.
 From the facts, let them guess the topic for
today.

EXPLORE
3. Presenting the new lesson

Show video clips/films during and after volcanic

eruption.
 The learners will watch a clip/films during
and after volcanic eruptions.

4. Discussing new concepts and practice new skills.

Group Activity:
 Let the learners work in group of three.
1. With the use of a clip, let the learners describe
what happens when volcanoes erupt.
(Let them play and match the questions and
answer presented on the board. Group 1 will
answer question no. 1, group 2 in question n0.2,
and group 3 in question no.3)
 Where and how do volcanoes form?
 What causes the eruption of a volcano?
 How does the silica content of magma
affect eruptions?
2. Simulation of Volcanic Eruption: To understand
the eruption of volcanoes, with the needed
materials, let the learners work in three groups
and create their own volcano and let it erupts.
 Processing Questions:
Based on the activity, answer the ff:
 How do volcanoes form?
 Why do volcano erupt?
 What happens when volcano erupt?

EXPLAIN
Developing Mastery
 Sharing: Let the learners share to the
class their observations what happens
during and after eruption.
 Through reports and activities presented,
discuss what happens when volcanoes
erupt

ELABORATE

skills in daily living
 What are the positive and negative
effects of volcanic eruption?
 Give emphasis that Philippines is part of
the Pacific Ring of Fire.

EVALUATION
