APRIL 15-20, 2019

ORIENTAL HOTEL
Training Objectives

 Understand what is FSY and its objectives

 Understand your role in the FSY
 Be excited for the FSY and do everything you can to
make it a success
What is an FSY Conference?

For the Strength of Youth (FSY) Conferences are

large-scale youth activities held under the direction
of the Area Presidency.
 For youth ages 14-18
 Multi-stake level activities
 Carefully balanced five-day program
 Include classes, devotionals, and activities
 Facilitated by worthy, spiritually matured young
single adults who serve as FSY leaders
 Focus on the Mutual theme for the year 2019
Objectives of FSY

The main objective of FSY is to deepen the participant’s

conversion to the gospel of Jesus Christ. The Lord loves the
youth and wants to strengthen them in these last days. As the
youth become more converted, they will be prepared to:

 Enter the temple worthily and make temple covenants.

 Participate in missionary service.
 Be worthy husbands, wives, fathers, and mothers.
 Build the kingdom of God throughout their lives.
Keys to Successful FSY
 Priesthood leadership and engagement. Stake and
ward leaders and parents know and fulfill their
responsibilities. Allow YSA to become the “ face of
the conference” to the youth. Minimum adults!
 Living the standards in For the Strength of Youth by
all participants.
 Exemplary FSY leaders especially young single adult
counsellors who become role models for the youth.
 Giving the youth the opportunity to build and serve
one another, develop lasting friendships, and
strengthen their testimonies together.
 Careful planning and following FSY guidelines,
curriculum, & schedule.
How is FSY Organized?
Counselor Groups and Companies
Roles – Session Directing Couple

The session directing couple will be on-site at the conference

and have responsibility for the spiritual aspects of FSY. The
husband and wife will spend the entire week with the youth
and young adult counselors.

The couple will have formal teaching opportunities every day,

as well as countless informal teaching moments. Because
this couple will serve as role models for the youth and young
single adult counselors, it is important that an exemplary
husband and wife be chosen.
Roles – Coordinators

Coordinators are young single adults who have great

leadership abilities. They are responsible for the logistical
side once the session begins. They are to make sure all
activities run smoothly, efficiently, and effectively.

It is recommended that each session have 2 coordinators –
one male and one female.
Roles – Assistant Coordinators

Assistant coordinators are young single adults who help run

the program under the direction of the coordinators. They
assist the coordinators in their responsibilities.

Assistant coordinators can be male or female. They are not

assigned to work directly with the youth but to assist the
counselors who do.

Each assistant coordinator oversees 2 to 8 counselor groups

and each session should include a minimum of 5 assistant
coordinators.
Roles – Counselors
Counselors are key to the success of FSY. Each counselor oversees a
‘counselor group’ of 10-12 youth. A counselor should:

 Be a returned missionary (required for males, desired for females)

 Be at least 20 years of age
 Be spiritually mature, have a testimony of the restored gospel
 Be active in his or her ward/branch
 Be temple worthy
 Be slow to anger and not be easily offended
 Be fun, enthusiastic about life, and optimistic
 Love and relate to the youth
 Be willing to serve
Roles – Health Counselors

At least one health counselor should be assigned to each

FSY session. For sessions with more than 300 participants,
one additional health counselor should be assigned for every
additional 200 participants.

Except in cases of extreme emergency, all illnesses and

health-related concerns should be directed to the health
counselors first rather than to emergency services.
Roles – Teachers

The responsibility of teachers is to teach four 50-minute

class periods on the approved gospel topics and principles.
They need not stay for the entire duration of the FSY session.

Teachers should submit their lesson outlines to the Area

Seventy supervising their session for approval.

FSY teachers should be men or women who hold current

temple recommends and receive an ecclesiastical clearance
from their bishop or branch president.
Roles – Logistical Administrators
and Committee Members
The Logistical Committee coordinates various logistical aspects
of FSY before the session begins, but committee members do
not have responsibilities during FSY. The logistical
administrator (s) may attend FSY if needed, but logistical
committee members normally do not attend. The logistical
administrator(s) may be either a married couple or a single adult
member.

Committee member roles include:

 Facilities  Counselors
 Food  Health and safety
 Registration  Materials
 Publicity  Housing
 Financial
Roles – Local Leaders

 Show enthusiasm and support for FSY

 Interviewing, calling, setting apart, and preparing
exemplary FSY leaders, especially young single adults.
 Teaching and preparing parents, youth, and young single
adults through devotionals months before the five-day
conference.
 Interview each youth and invite them to live the standards
now. Be positive about FSY with youth and YSA
 Get the YM and YW presidencies to support FSY. Use
mutual activities to prepare for the FSY
Roles – Local Leaders

 Invite the less active youths to join the FSY

 During FSY, pray daily and specifically for the youth and
young adults that are participating
 Extending the benefit and spirit of FSY beyond the
conference and inviting youth to complete and report on
goals they set at FSY. Ask them to bear testimonies
