1. Welcome
Welcome to the BUSI 1360 Professional Practice course, which supports your learning during your
Internship. This Guide has been prepared to help support students who are starting their Internships in
October 2018. If this does not apply to you, or you are unsure whether or not this is the correct
Course/Moodle site for you, please contact Dr Mike Edmunds at ‘m.d.edmunds@gre.ac.uk’.

Please note that his Guide uses HYPERLINKS which, if you are reading it on a computer screen, should
show as blue, underlined text. If you click on a hyperlink it will take you directly to the appropriate part
of this Guide.

This document outlines the course’s main features and assessments and provides you with the key
information you need during the course. If you have any queries about the running of this course please
don’t hesitate to contact your Internship Tutor (see section 2.2). If they cannot help you then please
contact me including your original email to your Internship tutor.

YOU MUST BE WORKING IN AN INTERNSHIP AUTHORISED BY THE BSEO ON OR BEFORE

15TH NOVEMBER 2018. You can contact the BSEO to arrange an appointment on
busemployability@gre.ac.uk or visit them at the Business School Employability Office, University of
Greenwich, Greenwich Campus, Old Royal Naval College, Park Row, London SE10 9LS. Telephone:
020 8331 9772.

PLEASE NOTE THAT THIS DATE FOR STARTING WORK IN AN INTENSHIP IS ABSOLUTE
AND UNCHANGEABLE SO PLEASE MAKE SURE YOU HAVE AN INTERNSHIP BY THAT
DATE BY PLANNING A LONG TIME IN ADVANCE AND STARTING YOUR SEARCH EARLY.

Your first assessment, to submit your Job Description, is due on 15 th NOVEMBER 2018. You must then
submit your first Learning Journal on 15 th DECEMBER 2018 and further Learning journals or other
assessment tasks on the 15th of each month throughout your Internship. (NB This date may vary slightly
if the 15th falls on a weekend or public holiday).

Your ‘attendance’ at the University – a University and UKBA requirement – is registered on the
GREWEB system from the submission of your monthly assessment submission. IF YOU DO NOT
SUBMIT YOUR MONTHLY ASSESSMENT ON TIME YOU WILL BE RECORDED AS
‘ABSENT’ AND THIS FACT REPORTED TO THE UKBA AND THE BUSINESS SCHOOL
OFFICE.

Best wishes for a successful Internship and completion of your MBAIB

2. Introduction to the Module

You must submit a Job Description (4% weighting) on 15 th November 2018 at the end of your first
month in your Internship. This is the final part of your Internship Authorisation process and is intended
as a check that you are in the Internship job that was authorised. If your role has changed since you
submitted your Authorisation forms you must contact the BSEO and discuss the changes with them.

This course aims to help you explore and practice reflective and experiential learning; and use this
practice during your Internship to develop your managerial skills and maximize your potential. The
main vehicle for doing this is your Learning Journal Assessment which you must complete monthly for
8 months starting on 15th December 2018 (please see Section 5 for details of this Assessment). The
whole Learning Journal– all 8 entries – and the Job Description constitute Portfolio 1. Portfolio 1 is 50
% of your assessment of the Professional Practice Course. The first 4 Learning Journal entries are
weighted at 4% each and the second 4 at 20% each. The first four are intended to be drafts for the
second 4. You must submit a Learning Journal on the 15 th of each month otherwise you will be
considered not to be engaged with your studies. In this case the University will re-consider its support
for your Student Visa – if it withdraws support for your Visa you will have to leave the UK.

The other 50% weighted assessment is your Portfolio 2. This consists of your Draft and Final Reflective
Report which you submit on 30th September 2019 – around the completion of your Internship. (Please
note this date might change slightly when the Faculty Calendar for 2018-19 is set in summer 2018)
Please see Section 5 for details of this assessment – click on the hyperlink above to go directly to that
section of this Guide.

You will also need to submit a ‘Certificate of Completion’ of Internship’ when you have completed 46
weeks of Internship (including normal holidays and bank holidays)

2.1 The need to Re-register in September 2019

You will need to re-register for the MBAIB in September 2019. If you do not, you will find yourself
unable to complete your MBAIB. You will lose your access to your University email; the ability to
submit assessments; and all access to Moodle and Banner. YOU WILL FAIL YOUR MBAIB.

IF YOU DO NOT RE-REGISTER YOU WILL BE UN-ENROLLED. This decision is only

exceptionally reversed so please diarize this action now.

2.2 Internship Tutors

All queries should, in the first instance, be directed to your Internship Tutor. You will find a list of
Internship Tutors and their allocated students in Section 1 of the BUSI 1360 Moodle site. You are
entitled to expect a reply from your Internship Tutor within five working days. If you do not receive a
reply within this timescale then please send a copy of your original email to me, the Course Leader, Dr
Mike Edmunds at ‘m.d.edmunds@gre.ac.uk’ after you have read this Course Guide; the FAQs on the
BUSI1360 Professional Practice Course Moodle site; and the other materials that appear on that Moodle
site. Please remember to give your full name as it appears on your student card, your nine digit student
number, the name of your Internship Tutor, MBAIB start date, and the date you expect to start (or have
started) your Internship in any communication. I am afraid that I cannot answer queries that do not
contain this information in full.

You will be allocated an Internship Course Tutor at the start of your Internship. You should refer to the
list in Section 1 of the BUSI 1360 Moodle site to see who this is, and will find your Internship Tutor’s
contact details later in this Guide.
6

2.3 Finding an Internship

YOU MUST HAVE STARTED WORK IN AN AUTHORISED INTERNSHIP BY THE 15 TH
OCTOBER 2018.

It is your responsibility to find an Internship. The earlier you start and the more effort you put in, the
more successful you are likely to be. Students last year on average submitted 50 applications in order to
find an Internship. Do not be discouraged by some early rejections.

You should have prepared your CV as a part of your Foundations of Scholarship Course and had it
‘Authorised’ by the Business School Employability Office by the end of April 2018. If you missed this
date you will need to visit the Business School Employability Office and discuss your options with
them. Remember failure to find a placement that starts on time will normally mean you being awarded
the MA International Business and your studies at the University terminated. The MBAIB Programme
Regulations expect you to normally complete your Academic Programme and your 46 week internship
within 24 months of starting the MBAIB Programme. The only exceptions to this will normally be
formally submitted and accepted Extenuating Circumstances claims (see your Programme Handbook
and this Course’s Moodle site for details as to how to apply).

If you do not pass your MBAIB Academic Programme at your first attempt – normally defined as
passing at least 150 out of 180 credits – then you will be expected to delay the start of your Internship
until you have recovered this failure and have the necessary 150 credits of ‘passed’ courses. Again you
will then normally be expected to complete the Internship within 12 months of achieving passes in 150
credits. If you are an International student, and this means you will not have leave to stay in the UK to
complete your full 12 months of Internship, then you are allowed to split your Internship between the
UK and another country.

If you subsequently find an Internship Placement you may, within the next two years, apply to re-join
the MBAIB Programme. This will involve you ‘trading –in’ your MAIB Certificate as ‘Accredited Prior
Learning’ (APL) and then going on to complete the 46 week Internship year by one of the standard
Assessment Dates. These are roughly each year (exact dates are set each summer for the following
year):-

• 15th February to 31st January the following year.

• 15th October to 30th September the following year.

I hope that you will enjoy this course, and wish you every success as you commence your managerial
career.
7

2.4 Working in your Internship (International Students).

You must start your Internship between 1 st September and 15th October 2018. You must work in it for
at least 46 weeks and FINISH WORKING ON OR BEFORE 30 TH September 2019. If you are an
International Student this is a condition of your visa. The start date and duration are defined in the
Terms of your Student Visa and any breach of these dates will be viewed as a very serious matter by
the University and the UK Border Agency.

As your internship is a planned part of your Programme of study you can work 48 hours per week in
your Internship job. Any other type of additional ‘part-time’ employment in, for example, a club,
supermarket or restaurant must be for less than an additional 20 hours per week.

If you require further advice please contact the international advice service at

2.3 Enquiry Based Learning and Research Led Teaching

Enquiry-Based Learning (EBL)

Defined as ‘an approach based on self-directed enquiry or investigation in which the student is actively
engaged in the process of enquiry facilitated by a teacher. EBL uses real life scenarios (for example,
from case studies, company visits, and project work) and students investigate topics of relevance that
foster the skills of experimental design, data collection, critical analysis and problem-solving’.

Enquiry based learning is at the core of this Module. You as the Internship Student are required to
reflect on your early experiences of exercising your MBAIB Key Skills and your effotrs to improve
your performance of these skills.

Research-Led Teaching (TLD)

An element of EBL which involves faculty introducing students to their own research where it is
relevant to the curriculum being taught as well as drawing on their own knowledge of research
developments in the field, introducing them to the work of other researchers. TLD sees students as
active participants in the research process, not just as an audience. This is achieved by discussing such
developments in lectures and classes, and setting reading lists including recent research publications at
the frontier of the field. The definition of a diverse assessment regime at the programme level
(incorporating an expectation of familiarity with, and use of, such publications in assignments) and the
inclusion of projects at every level of the programme is also fundamental to achieving these objectives.

The Module Leader, Dr Mike Edmunds, is a long established researcher in the fields of reflective
learning and management graduate apprenticeships. He has used experience extensively in designing
and running this Module.

2.4 Embedding Employability in the Curriculum

The Intership is a wonderful structured opportunity for you to improvement your MBAIB Key Skills:-

 Leadership

 Negotiation

 Change Management

 Problem Solving

You will have three opportunities through your formative and final learning Journals and your Final
Reflective Report to engage in written reflection of your (improving) performance of your exercise of
these skill through the year of your Internship. These reflections will provide basic material for use in
your post MBAIB job search activities.
10

a. Cognitive Skills

You will be required to reflective on your experience of problem solving and your implementation
of solutions throughout your Internship.

b. Generic Competencies

Your reflective Learning Journals will each require you to develop a model of good practice of
performance of a MBAIB Key skill through a well argued literature review and apply that to your
practice.

c. Personal Capabilities

The BSEO will provide assistance with the job search and application process bot when applying
for Internship positions and later when when applying for post MBAIB career jobs.

d. Technical Ability

Level 6: Introduce an extra niche technology or more advanced skills (practical and/or technology-
based) in previous applications. Further reflection on the value of these skills for the appropriate
subject/discipline.

e. Organisational Awareness

Your assessments will require you to review the relevant literature to familiarize yourself with the
latest developments in management practice and incorporate those in your reflections of your
performance and hence your assessments.

f. Practical and Professional Elements

You will be required to ‘prove’ yourself as a manager during your internship and reflect on your
performance through your assessments. These written reflections may be used later as the basisi of
job applications.

g. Developing Professional Online Identity (partly within PDP where such a module exists

The BSEO will provide assistance with your establishment of a professional online identity on
LinkedIn through relevant posting and contributing to professional discussion on groups. This will
include assistance with actively seeking out new connections including UoG alumni in relevant
geographical or sector specific areas.

2.5 Learning and teaching activities

This course is partly directed, partly self-determined, but the responsibility lies with you to manage your
own learning experience. The more you put into the process the more you will benefit. Your Internship
Course Tutor will be there to facilitate your learning and to guide and support you through the Moodle
site should you need it. This is a 60 credit Course which means that you are expected to put in around
600 hours of study over the 46 weeks of your Internship. This means studying around 13 hours a week
throughout your Internship year IN ADDITION TO the time you spend at work. This is generally the
minimum amount of time a native English speaking student will need to spend reading, note taking and
writing to cover the necessary material and produce the assessment. If English is not your first language
you might take longer to cover the same amount of material. There is a very clear and direct correlation
between the amount of study time you put in ON A WEEKLY BASIS and your marks. Please try to
11

work regularly and submit your Learning Journal Entries on time. Please remember the assessments (the
Learning Journal entries and the Final Reflective Report) are compulsory and the submission dates are
not negotiable.

This studying can take a number of forms but the core of it will be self-directed and self-selected
reading of the reflective and experiential learning and managerial literature relevant to your situation in
your Internship. Whenever you want to discuss something that has happened to you at work your first
reaction should be to look at the relevant literature in order to ‘frame’ your discussion in the terms used
in the literature and to develop models of good practice (checklists) which will enable you to ask the
right questions and establish appropriate practice standards. At the start of the Internship stage of your
studies you should already be familiar with a wide variety of literature sources including refereed
journal articles and web based sources. In every case the mark you get for a Professional Practice
assessment will depend largely upon your breadth of reading; your ability to synthesize this into
‘models’ appropriate to your situation; your ability to apply these ‘models’ to learn from and develop
your practice; and your ability to comment intelligently on the appropriateness and efficacy of the
relevant literature.

*Note that while each individual Assessment (Learning Journal Entry) does not have to be ‘passed’ with 50% or
above the overall mark for the Course must be 50% or above for the course to be ‘passed’. The normal University
regulations apply to the way this Course may be ‘Compensated’ or ‘Condoned’ by a PAB for a student who
achieves an overall mark of less than 50 %.

5.3.2 Job description (weight 4%)

In order to formally register the start of your Internship you must submit a Job Description on the 15 th
November which fairly reflects the duties you are expected to undertake.
18

The format of this may differ depending on whether or not your employing organization provides such a
document as part of its normal processes. If your Employing Organisation provides a Job Description
then you may submit this with a brief commentary of up to 500 words as to how the reality of your work
matches the Job Description.

If your Employing Organisation does not provide a Job Description then you should create your own
following the pro forma below or similar and provide a commentary of up to 500 words on how you see
yourself developing in your Internship Role over the coming year.

This assessment is marked on a Pass/Fail basis – if you pass you will be credited effectively with a mark
of 100% - late submissions will be ‘capped’ at 50%.

As with all Internship Assessments it is a condition of your membership of the university (and of
your visa if you are an international student) that you show engagement with your studies by
submitting monthly assessments on time. Failure to do this will result in you being referred to the
Business School Retention Unit (and if you are an International student the International Office).
You will be removed from the MBAIB Programme and (if an International student) have support
for your visa withdrawn if you miss more than one assessment without good cause.

reflections on one of the four MBAIB Key Skills ie Leadership, Negotiation, Problem Solving
and Change Management. Reflections on other skills are not acceptable for this assessment and
will be marked as ‘Fails – 0%’.

If you have any queries please address them to your Internship Tutor in the first instance.

Late submissions will be accepted provided they are submitted within 10 working days of the original
date. THE MARK FOR LATE SUBMISSIONS WILL BE CAPPED AT 50% unless you have formally
applied, and been accepted for, Extenuating Circumstances by the Business School Extenuating
Circumstances Panel. If you do decide to make such an Application for ECs please e-mail your
Internship Tutor and the Course Leader, Dr Mike Edmunds at m.d.edmunds@gre.ac.uk to make them
aware that you have submitted an ECs application.

Assessments will not be accepted for submission more than 10 working days late in any circumstances.

5.3.4 Correct Choice of Skill on which to base the Learning Journal Entry
Each month you must complete the ‘Table’ at the start of the Learning Journal Template to show the
skills you have reviewed in your Journal Entries to date. Failure to do this will result in a deduction of
10% points from your mark for that Journal Entry.

The first 4 ‘draft’ Learning Journal Entries (5% weighting each) must each deal with one of the four
MBAIB Key Skills. The second ‘final’ 4 Entries (20% weighting each) will then develop your
reflections on each of the skills discussed in the first 4 entries. It is allowed to use the text from the first
‘draft’ entries in the second entries but it is expected that the second ‘final’ entries will be a development
of the first. It is up to you to judge the appropriateness of the choice of a particular MBAIB key skill for
a particular month.

SKILL

Please do NOT copy and paste the text below. This text is offered as guidance for you to follow and
while you may have a paragraph or more that corresponds to each ‘box’ you should use normal
academic prose English to write your Learning Journal entry. 10% will be deducted from your mark if
you include the text below in your Learning journal submission.

1. Which Skill are you reflecting on in this entry? Please choose ONE from:-

Leadership;

Problem Solving;

Negotiation;

Change Management.

2. Describe your experience of exercising this skill in your Internship. Give a concrete example and
show how you approached a particular management issue.

3. Summarise the literature you have reviewed that provided you with insight into the way you
exhibited this skill. In this section you should identify the key elements of the skill and set the
standards of performance that should be expected for each element of the skill. This commentary
should be supported by authoritative sources that must be cited in accordance with the Harvard
system. You should put the full references in Section 6 below.

You will be asked later, in Section 5, to identify the things that you did well and the things you might
improve on if you had the opportunity to repeat the experience.

4. Use the literature you have reviewed in ‘3’ above to develop a framework or checklist by which you
can reflect on and/or judge your performance on this skill. This Section should only contain the
framework or checklist – your reflections and judgments should be made in Section 5 below.

5. Use the framework you have developed in ‘4’ above to reflect on and judge your own performance.
You should identify the things that you did well and the things you might improve on if you had the
opportunity to repeat the experience later on in your Internship. Remember to use the terminology and
standards you have developed in Sections 3 and 4 to voice your comments in this section.

5.3.9 Portfolio 2 - Reflective Report

Your 4,000 word ‘Draft’ Final Reflective Report (20% weighting) and 6,000 word ‘Final’ Final
Reflective Report (80% weighting) are a summary of your learning from your Internship. They should
initially reflect and build on your 8 monthly Learning Journal entries.

Your Final Reflective Report should be structured around the four MBAIB Key Managerial skills.

MBAIB Key Managerial Skills

 Negotiating skills
 Leadership skills
 Problem solving skills
 Change management skills

In order to prepare your Final Reflective Report (see below) you will need to develop, summarise and
add to your Learning Journal entries (remember Turnitin will show your tutor where you have
repeated earlier content). The structure of each section is for you to decide – this is Postgraduate
study – but students in the past have found the following template helpful. Remember to focus on your
learning in relation to a particular skill – which might have developed through several different but
related experiences. Do NOT try and catalogue all, or even the most important, experiences you have
had during your Internship – this usually results in a ‘fail’.

Structure of a Reflective Report

(Word length ‘guides are indicative only of the maximum length that each section should
NORMALLY be. The first figure in each case is intended for the Draft Reflective Report and the
second for the Final Reflective Report. You may vary these at your own discretion but remember that
marks are earned for analytical work rather than description)

Introduction (guide 400/600 words)

Who you are; what are the key skills and abilities you bring to the Internship post; any relevant past
experiences?

What does your Internship job involve? Your Job description and person specification (if available)
will be key documents here. They may be included as Appendices and should not be included in the
Word Count.

Are you on a management training scheme?

Does your organisation have an Appraisal system? Describe it; is it a good one? (What does the
literature suggest a ‘good’ appraisal system should look like for an organisation like the one you work
for? How does yours compare? Do you agree with the literature or not?) Have you had an Appraisal?
What did you learn from the exercise?

What opportunities does the Internship offer for you to develop and demonstrate:-

 Leadership skills
 Negotiating skills
 Problem solving skills
 Change management skills

Your internship should allow you to develop and demonstrate the four key managerial skills listed
34

above in order to achieve the learning outcomes of the Professional Practice Course.

Each of the skills is open to wide interpretation and your analysis below should relate to your
experience of each of the skills in the context of your Internship. Marks will be awarded for depth of
understanding (breadth of reading); ability to synthesize models of good practice; ability to analyse
your own performance in relation to your model of good practice; ability to draw valid conclusions
from your analysis; and make appropriate recommendations for your own and your organisations
development. Description should be kept to the minimum necessary to support your analysis.

Leadership (guide 1000/1500 words)

In this and the following four sections you must:-

1. Develop a model of Leadership appropriate to your position in your organisation.

This will involve you in the use of a wide range of sources from the literature. It is usually
best to start with the ‘classics’ (usually books) which cover the skill generally and then work
through recently published books, refereed journals and web sources to look for literature
which discusses the latest developments; particularly in relation to the circumstances and/or
industry you are working in.

Your mark (see marking criteria below) will depend on the breadth of reading covered and
your ability to work logically, critically and demonstrate originality in deriving a model to
analyse your own leadership skills – or lack of them – in your internship.

2. Analyse your performance in comparison to that suggested by the model you have derived
from the literature.

Use whatever evidence you have – your own perceptions of your performance, Appraisal
Reports, comments from colleagues, managers, and clients etc to work out your strengths and
weaknesses; how you have developed; and what you still need to work on. It is the quality of
your analysis (your ability to be a reflective learner) rather than evidence of ‘good’
performance that will earn you marks!

3. Comment on the usefulness of the model and its appropriateness for you and your
organization’s circumstances.

Demonstrate originality and insight by suggesting possible improvements and/or

developments for you, your organisation and the model i.e. what research needs to be done to
further improve our understanding of this area of managerial practice in this type of
organisation.

Negotiating skills (guide 1000/1500 words)

As for ‘leadership’ above but with reference to Negotiating Skills.

Problem solving skills (guide 1000/1500 words)

As for ‘leadership’ above but with reference to Problem Solving Skills.

35

Change management skills (guide 1000/1500 words)

As for ‘leadership’ above but with reference to Change Management Skills.

Reflective Practice (guide 700/1000 words)

What does reflective learning mean to you? Look at the literature on Reflective Learning and derive a
model of ‘good practice’ that you (should) have followed through your Internship. Did you follow it?
Did it work for you? Did some features of the ‘model’ work better than others? If so comment on
those that worked well and those that you think did not? (You should aim to look at at least three
authors’ writings on Reflective Learning; their supporters and their critics. All should be properly
cited and included in your bibliography. Obviously the more sources you look at the better your work
is likely to be. You should aim to do this reading early in your Internship so that you can put your
‘model’ into practice. Cross refer to your Blog assessment on reflective learning.)

Evaluate the model of reflective learning you have produced in the light of your own experience. How
would you improve it?

Conclusion (guide 400/500 words)

Summarize your reflections on your learning and development through your internship.

Recommendations (guide 400/500 words)

Make between 2 and 5 practical and implementable recommendations that derive from and link to
your previous text.
36

5.3.10 Marking Criteria for Draft and Final Reflective Reports

NB (The % given to the marks under each criteria are a rough guide only as to the relative importance
of each criteria. Tutors will not give marks for each ‘section’ but will mark the assessment overall
with appropriate reference to the generic Post Graduate Marking Criteria repeated below.)

Literature Review 30%

Have you demonstrated a deep understanding of each skill and the way it is best used in your
Internship Organisation? Have you covered all the relevant literature sources – classics; recent
literature including refereed journal articles particularly those relating to using the skill in the
industry/type of organisation/circumstances you experienced? Web sources (with some reference to
their provenance)

This is the key part of this assessment as the depth of understanding of the literature you demonstrate
will obviously affect your ability to demonstrate the other following criteria. Put simply, if the you
have a limited view of the literature then your ability to synthesize an appropriate model, analyse your
own performance and draw conclusions and recommendations will also be adversely affected.

Ability to develop and authoritative checklist for the performance of the four MBAIB Key Skills
10%

Have you critically appraised the reading on each of the four skills and used reasoned argument and
worked in a lucid way to derive an appropriate and useful model of the way each skill should be
exercised in your Organisation?

Ability to analyse your own performance in relation to your model of good practice 30%

Have you demonstrated originality and confidence in analysing and criticising your own
performance? Do you make appropriate use of sources of evidence – appraisal reports, reviews,
comments from colleagues, managers clients and important others? Is your analysis voiced in the
terms used in the literature; related to the model you have derived from the literature; and does it add
new insights to the topic and/or suggest support for or improvements to the ‘synthesized’ model.

Ability to draw valid conclusions from your analysis 10%

Have you demonstrated original, critical thinking based on insight, knowledge and understanding of
the material used? Are your conclusions derived as a result of reasoned argument from the main text?
Is the relationship with the main text clear?

Ability to make appropriate recommendations for your own and your organisations development
10%
37

Have you demonstrated original, critical thinking based on insight, knowledge and understanding of
your organisation? Are the recommendations derived as a result of reasoned argument from the main
text? Is the relationship with the main text clear? Are the recommendations practical and capable of
implementation?

Clarity of Structure 5%

Are your writings well organized and logically constructed to achieve synthesis while being mindful
of the needs of the reader? Is the piece interesting and easily read? Does it present a reasoned
argument that the reader can easily follow?

Mechanical Soundness 5%

Are the writings clear, spell checked, grammatically sound and referenced appropriately?
