GREATEST COMMON FACTOR

I. Learning Objectives

Cognitive: Determine the Greatest Common Factor GCF of the given numbers
Psychomotor: Compute the Greatest Common Factor using any of the three
methods: listing factors, prime factorization, continuous division (ladder method)
Affective: Appreciate unity and cooperation in group activities

II. Learning Content

Skill: Find the Greatest Common Factor of the given number using the following
methods: listing factors, prime factorization, continuous division
Reference: M4NS-IIc-68.1
Elementary Mathematics p. 27-31, p 140-143,

Instructional Materials: flashcards, cartolina, number cards, pen, charts
Values: Cooperation, Teamwork

III. Procedure

A. Preliminary Activities
1. Prayer

2. Greetings

3. Energizer
Game: 123 LOOK-up
Mechanics of the game:
1. Gather students into circle
2. On the count of three the student will point in to someone in the circle
3. And if two participants look with each other then they are both out of
the game
4. Checking of attendance

5. Drill on identifying prime numbers and composite numbers

Strategy: Individual identification

Materials: number cards, flash cards, charts
Mechanics:
a. Distribute the word card to students consisting of the word prime and
composite
b. Raise flash cards consisting of numbers and let the students identify
whether the number is composite or prime number
c. Stop the game until everyone participates
d. Show the class a chart of prime numbers and composite numbers and
explain to the class that it will be used on further discussions

6. Review: Factorization

Strategy: Game-Identify the factors of the given number

Materials: number cards, flash cards
Mechanics:
a. The teacher will distribute the numbers to the students
consisting of prime and composite numbers
b. The teacher flashes a card consisting of two numbers
c. Then each student will raise the factors of the number that was
raised by the teacher
d. Then the teacher will list on the board the answers of the
students and check if it is correct
e. Then ask 1 student to identify the common factors of the given
number
7. Motivation: Ask the students if what do they usually do to help their parents
on house chores? That house chores is easier if the chores are divided
accordingly to the member of the house.

B. DevelopmentalActivities

1. Presentation (Three Methods of finding the Greatest Common Factor GCF)

Strategy 1: The Listing Method
Based on the posted task of the students, the teacher will use it and
identify the greatest common factor of the two numbers

a. 24 = 1, 2, 3, 4, 6, 8, 12, 24
12= 1, 2, 3, 4, 6, 12
GCF= 12
b. 35 = 1, 5, 7, 35
15= 1, 3, 5
GCF = 5

Strategy 2: Prime Factorization Method (Tree Method)

List the shared prime numbers

24= 2. 2. 2. 3
12=2. 2. 3
Multiply the common shared prime factor which is 2.2.3 in order to find
the GCF
GCF=12

Strategy 3: Continuous Division (Ladder Method)

a. Finding GCF which involves division
b. Using the given numbers 24 and 12, 35 and 15
c. The teacher guides the pupils to get the GCF by dividing the lowest
prime number to both of the given number till it reached to the prime
quotients, just like shown below.
2. Learning Exercise

Strategy: Game
Mechanics:
a. Group the students into three groups and each group will be given
cartolina and pen for them to write down their answers and choose
one reporter for each group to report their task in front.
b. Provide each group with two sets of number wherein they will
compute the GCF using the three methods which is listing of factors,
prime factorization and continuous division
c. Reporting

4. Generalization
What are the methods of finding the GCF of numbers?
The three methods of finding GCF of numbers are listing down
method, prime factorization (factor tree), continuous division (ladder
method)

IV. Evaluation (Assessment)

Get 1 whole sheet of paper and answer the following:

1.Find the GCF of the following numbers using listing method

1. 36 =1 2 3 4 6 9 12 18 36 2. 40= 1, 2, 4, 5, 8, 10, 20, 40

24=1 2 3 4 6 8 12 24 25= 1, 5, 25
8=1 2 4 8 10= 1, 2, 5 10
Common factors: Common Factors:
GCF= GCF=

2.Fill in the missing numbers and compute the GCF using prime factorization method
V. Assignment

Solve each problem.

1.Find the GCF of each set of numbers using continuous division.
