SAFETY ASPECTS FOR LITHIUM-ION


BATTERIES
Lithium-ion battery – Charging and discharging through movement of lithium ions.

Causes for battery failure – External or internal short circuit due to crash, misuse or quality
issues.

Signs of battery failure:

• Hissing sound.
• Smoke or gas coming out of battery.
• High heat generation.

Three categories when analysing a battery:

• Green – Complete battery, used or new.


• Yellow – Defective battery.
• Red – Severely damaged battery.

High voltage battery is classified as dangerous goods.

Battery categories:

• Green – Allowed to be transported as long as it is packed in the correct way.


• Yellow – Only allowed to be transported by road or sea.
• Red – Not allowed to be transported.

Battery belong to Class 9, Miscellaneous dangerous substances and articles, in the UN


system.

Use Volvo Cars original packages and make sure the labelling is correct.

The Dangerous Goods Declaration should be filled in and handed over along with the
package.
